Yay! Ricoh Imaging will announce a new camera this month or next month! (Nokishita)

The MF market segment is different to the other parts of the photographic equipment market, though. People who buy there tend to be either people making money from their gear, or well-heeled amateurs. We don’t really know what the sales figures are, let alone what the newer entries are doing to the market.

On the matter of a new sensor, given the size of the existing body and the fact that SR isn’t present currently and is probably not necessary for the uses that MF cameras are put to (PS is another matter, though), the major investments required would be for the supporting hardware and firmware. Although margins for MF bodies are probably not as large as they were when the 645D came out, I imagine they’re still substantial, so those investments may well be small enough to ensure a satisfactory return from the resulting sales boost. PS would probably be gilding the lily for a 100MP MF image, too.

The Good - The Bad and The Ugly about Pentax

Not many people suggesting the non-OEM lens support is bad seem to have registered that non-AF makers like Samyang and Irix are supporting the K-mount. Irix’s offering is limited at the moment, but there’s no doubt about their lenses’ IQ and they’ve supported Pentax users from the start, all of which I find encouraging.

Anyway, I doubt Sigma is coming back, now they’ve got the start-up market for Leica SL-mount Panasonic bodies, so we should stop mourning their loss. It was good while it lasted, but it’s over now. We’re whining like an ex-lover whose paramour has moved in with a well-heeled suitor, and it’s unbecoming.

As for Tamron, it seems Ricoh picked the two most useful lenses from their lineup to adapt, and sales have been good, but which other of their lineup would enough people buy at the conversion asking price?

On the ugly side, while I agree that Ricoh’s marketing strategy for Pentax is fairly muted, it isn’t totally absent, unless you believe that advertising is all there is to marketing. Given the size of Pentax sales, would anyone care to venture what their marketing budget should be? I’m not talking about strategies or activities they could undertake: I mean dollars or yen. I have no idea what the benchmark is for photographic hardware, but I suspect people who throw about grand ideas for these things don’t have much of an idea either. It strikes me that Ricoh undertakes the front end of marketing (ie researching what’s happening in their patch, and what’s likely to sell) fairly well, the Theta, the K-1 and the new lenses being cases in point.

Yet another feature that could be readily included, should the mooted hybrid viewfinder ever come to pass.

Would not an etching primer be satisfactory, rather than grinding or chemically removing the chrome? The satin chrome finish on older film cameras isn’t like the shiny automotive and other highly polished chrome plating finishes, so I’d think it wasn’t as difficult to paint over (and you can paint over shining chrome, with an etching primer base). I haven’t had it done, myself, so I’m wondering if you know.

Yes, if you don’t mind the extra bulk. There was a folding version that might have preserved the small bulk of the Q, but I suspect it was a bit fragile, so I passed on it.

Those who yearn for simplicity are helping stock aged care homes with dementia sufferers. Complexity is nothing more than a lot of simple things assembled in one place, and it’s fairly well-established that having to work hard to learn something is actually good for your brain. Needless over-complication, though, is quite another thing.

I note that the difference in opinion over the need for an EVF often centres on the quality of sunshine in the local environment. My Q is fine on a cloudy day but in full sun it’s as hopeless as a smart phone for seeing what you’re shooting.

On the other hand, an eyepiece viewfinder not only allows you to see in bright light, but it helps you to better frame the subject because it concentrates your vision. I tried several hotshoe optical viewfinders on the Q, but their accuracy was something of a lottery even with a wide fixed FL lens – on a zoom they were thoroughly useless. In the finish, I gave up and bought a Fujifilm X30, which has an EVF: even though I don’t like the colours it produces very much, and its low-light EVF performance is pretty ugly, at least I can be confident of framing a subject.

It would be interesting to know how Ricoh sees the future prospects for APS-C, particularly that of the high-end body. I’m still not convinced that the KP is only a one-off, ie an evolutionary dead-end, but that’s because I see there is potential for pushing it into the higher role.

It’s hard to know what they’d do to produce a 35FF DSLR at a price below the K-1ii, unless maybe they stripped out IBIS, and included a fixed LCD screen, and/or maybe went to a lighter build.

Now, a K-1 with the patented EVF overlay, plus 4k video and a revised AF system would be a welcome addition at the higher price.

Where would that leave the needed APS-C upgrade, though? I can’t believe that, with the almost complete lens catalogue for that format, that APS-C would be left hanging with just the K70 and the KP.

A black chrome finish would be more durable, easily identifiable, and probably no more expensive than conventional re-chroming. It would be good to have that finish on the metal body parts of new cameras. I don’t know if it can be applied to the plastics used for other parts, given that some plastics can be chrome-plated.

I wonder how this would stack up against local intellectual property laws, let alone how an argument in a civil court would run? You can’t contract away any rights that statute law provides, after all. You can just imagine the adverse publicity that would be generated in a court case, so I would guess the only realistic recourse Ricoh would have to a breach of their terms would be to withdraw your image.

The bit about having no intention to enter the image in another contest etc is potentially contestable (eg when does that intention take effect and for how long? At the time of submission, or from that point on, forever?) and what does “unpublished” mean when you can show it on your own website?

Now, I know the K-1 is famous for its dynamic range, but this looks like it might have been done with fill flash, which is not your style, I think. Was the reflected light from the pavement sufficient, maybe with a little tweaking in post?

Nice mother and child candid portrait, too. :)

One quick suggestion: have you tried the Catch-in-Focus setting to possibly improve your keeper rate?

OK, OK. I shouldn’t have used the word “all”. :)

...which is what I was getting at with the second part of my post. Interesting how one word can divert attention, but that’s how some people deliberately work on Twitter!

In one way, this entire website is an advertisement for Pentax, albeit an unconventional one because it permits debate and dissent (and the other “D” word). People have occasionally said when they joined that it influenced their decision to go for Pentax. Admittedly, most participants get something out of being here, just not money or goods except when they win a camera or get a discount.

I reckon some of the objection to Ricoh using any submitted images is a bit over-wrought. In the first instance, we all “submit” images that other people can use (albeit without authorisation) from here and other image-posting websites. At least we know someone who’s using them if we submit them to Ricoh. Whether or not they control downloads I’m uncertain. Those of us who make a living from our photos will understandably be hesitant about submitting any of those for Ricoh to use as they want, but I doubt that the marketing channels are the same. If you sell printed copies through physical display, your customers are likely not going to be the same as those who look online and buy. In the case of the latter, people who pay serious money for a print won’t be looking for a low-resolution image pirated from Ricoh’s (or this) website. If you read Ricoh’s conditions, you’ll see that submitted images have to be no bigger than 2,000 pixels on the long side, using sRGB colour space – hardly the best for any decent-sized printed image.

Probably more importantly, though, is the fact that we all (maybe most of us, our pet Jeremiahs possibly excepted) want Ricoh to succeed with Pentax, and many of us consciously fight their corner in various forums. I don’t see how this is substantially different.

Thank you for that link. It’s always good to take a refresher on these things, if, like me, you haven’t been involved in an area of study for a while. Perhaps we can persuade an owner of either lens to subject it to the test chart referenced in the article, and settle the debate about aberrations.

OK. I missed those shots, thanks. Some noticeable CA (on one side of the objects, so I assume it's not PF) but possible aberrations seem confined to brighter objects, where I guess they'd be more noticeable, anyway. I've not done any astronomy in decades, so I'm just starting to think about these things again.

We’re in agreement, then. I’d have thought that someone here might have posted some astro photos with the D FA*50/1.4 wide open, by now. That might settle whether this is a design issue or a sample variation issue.

Edit: Did you mean there were some posts here with the Pentax version?

Has anyone posted wide-open astro shots with the D FA*50/1.4? A difference in coatings shouldn’t make any difference to coma or astigmatism, so if the Pentax version looks OK, then the pre-production sample the writer had might have an alignment issue.

PS – stopping down should alleviate both those conditions, nonetheless.

I’ve been thinking along similar lines, so I chased the da Vinci’s specification through, and it specifies a maximum build volume of 7.8” x 7.8” x 7.8” (ie 198mm cubed), whereas the OP’s Zortrax specification yields 200 x 200 x 185, so I conclude from that, that the da Vinci would be suitable. I couldn’t find the da Vinci’s layer resolution, but I guess it would be suitable.
