An interesting piece of information is that the designer of this lense is Tohru Matsumoto, son of Saburo Matsumoto (the guy who built up the modern Pentax from the ashes of three boombed factories after WW2). Tohru Matsumoto was head of Pentax from 1975-1996. It is the only lens patent where he is the leading inventor. The patent is from 1970. Between his MIT degree in 1963 and taking over the leadership of Asahi Optical Company from his dad in 1975, he probably worked a while in different departments, including enough time at the lens design department to draw this beast. Not a bad apprentice exam! Sorry for the rambling. A bit of Pentax history.

How about a DFA* 200mm macro? I would retire my sigma 180mm macro instantly if Pentax came out with a new 200mm macro. Tired of looking for a used FA*200 macro.

I've got the A*85/1.4, A*135/1.8, FA*24/2, FA*28-70/2.8, FA*80-200/2.8, FA*85/1.4, FA*300/4.5, DA*16-50/2.8, DA*50-135/2.8.
Optically they are all worth the *. The 135/1.8 would be worth two *. I've never had any SDM problems, but the 2nd lens element got lose on the DA*50-135, after bumping around in my back pack, so I had to open it up and repair it. Hapy ending. My A*'s and FA*'s have however taken more beating than that with no problems. So combined with the problems others had with the SDMs I think it is fair to say that the DA*'s build quality suffered from some bad compromises, probably forced onto Pentax by Hoya. The later DA*'s appears to do better, and I expect the new DFA*'s to be back at A*/FA* quality level. If not Pentax(Ricoh) shoot themselves in the foot.

I'm wondering why they only manufacture it for Nikon mount? I suspect K-mount would have sold much better. At least I would have been much more interrested. I have a few nice pre-AI nikons, but many more in K or m42. Am I wrong to think that Q-owners more typically are Pentaxians with a bunch of Pentax/Takumar lenses in the closset, rather than old Nikonians? And with the slightly longer registration distance of the Nikon mount, it is hard to add another adapter on it to adapt to another lens mount, without adding more optics that likely degrade the results.

But thanks for posting an interesting review.

As this is my first post on the Q-subforum, I suppose I should admit that I happened to buy a red Q10 2nd had for very little a week ago. It comes with the 01, 02, 04 (which doesn't impress) and 07.
Right now I'm shopping adapters to see what is worth trying on the Q10 of my lens collection: through the viewfinder: My Lenses

Pentax D FA* 50mm f1.4 and Tokina Opera 50mm f1.4

Not my job. But it surprices me that the forum has such a sloppy error. The facts are well known. Pentax and Tokina had a deal then where several Pentax lens patents were licenced to Tokina, and Tokina licensed one lens design to Pentax. It upset some people as unfair. But obviously the net cash-flow went from Tokina to Pentax, even though the sum was never purlic. It should be noted that the research section at Tokina is small, much smaller than at Pentax prior to the Hoya purge, and still smaller than the optical R&D at Ricoh today. Both Tamron and Sigma has substantially larger research teams than Tokina, so Tokina is dependent on this sort of deals.
As for the dates, it is the date when the patent was finally accepted. Production often start when the patent is still pending. That's a terrible slow process.

---------- Post added 06-21-18 at 05:53 AM ----------

I don't think so. Pentax was quite eager to repeat the success of the F 17-28mm fisheye zoom in APS-C format. And it worked, the DA 10-17mm has sold very well.

It was interresting to observe what happened with the 2nd hand price of the F 17-28mm fisheye zoom when the K-1 came. Since a lot of them where sold back in film-days, but the lens where nearly useless (or pointless) on APS-C, it was valued very low. Prices jumped up quite a lot. It works very well on the K-1. :)

Pentax D FA* 50mm f1.4 and Tokina Opera 50mm f1.4

The original full frame fish-eye zoom F 17-35mm was developed by Pentax lens designer Jun Hirokawa, patented in 1998.
The APS-C fisheye zoom DA 10-17mm was designed by the same Jun Hirokawa and his colleague at Pentax, Mr. Takayuki Ito, patented in 2008. Tokina, nor any other company helped with the development. That was 2 years before Hoya "retired" Jun Hirokawa.

So it is something of a tradition by Pentax to have a fisheye zoom.

Question about DA*55 or FA50 f2.8 macro

The F/FA/DFA50 macro is perhaps the sharpest Pentax lens and as you have discovered, very usefull. And then we haven't really considered that it is a very good 1:1 macro lens. Despite this it isn't very valued very high on the 2nd hand market, so you won't get that much for it. So keep only have to save a little bit longer.
The DA*55 is a very different lens, despite the close focal length. The DA*55 is optimised for high speed (big apperture, thin DOF), and smooth portraits skin, smooth bookeh. F/FA/DFA 50 macro is optimised for sharpness and 1:1 macro. You clearly need both!

Yes, both of them designed by Jun Hirokawa. To my knowĺedge the F17-28 was the first fisheye zoom ever, even though Canon and Nikon have since released their own fisheye zooms. The new fisheye zoom I suppose Masakazu Saori will design (he is currently the leading lens designer at Pentax, among other lenses he made the DA*16-50/2.8, DA*50-135/2.8, DA21ltd, DA70ltd and DFA*70-200/2.8), unless they just update the F17-28 with new coating etc. What I"ve learned as an owner of both the F17-28 and DA10-17 is that the zoom function makes the fisheye so much more usefull and easier to use.

There is no such thing as "de-fishing" a fish eye. The DA fish-eye zoom is a completely different beast. It's not rectlinear and it is much slower. You can't turn it into a rectlinear f2.8 zoom with some simple "de-fish-eye" process. The lens designs will be different from the first array.

Someone heard that you could make money selling old manual glass (it's a Tele-Tokina 300/5.5 in m42 mount) to dudes using them on digital cameras. Film cameras on the other hand is worthless, so he threw in the old film camera that was stuck to the lens for free. In that way he didn't had to figure out how to remove it. Mighty clever of him!

Now that camera looked familiar...

The original m42-K-mount adapter that, unknown to the seller, kept the lens mounted to that camera itself would have been enough to motivate what I payed. The camera turned out to just need a little cleaning. Even the light seels and the mirror bumber was OK and didn't need replacement. First film goes through it tomorrow.

The problem with lens reviews like the one on Pentax Forum is that most users only have experience of a small number of lenses. And people tend to like their gear, sometimes with passion. This causes a lot of 7th, 8ths and 9ths given to very average lenses that should have been given a 4, 5 or 6. So there is a lot of inflation in that rating system.

I have a little bit over 100 Pentax/Takumar prime lenses. Among those the best lense in my oppinion is the SMC Pentax A*135mm f1.8. The problem with its Pentax rating is that it is very rare, and therefore there are few reviews, so one very negative review is able to take down its average rating (it gets eleven 10ths, one 9th and one 3rd! That 3 value takes down the average from 9.92 to 9.38. In my oppinion, Adam should remove that review!). That review is either by someone who had a broken lens or did not undestand how razor thin the DOF is at 135mm f1.8 and hence failed to focus. His rating is enough to bring down the lense from the absolute top of average lens ratings. That is another weakness of that sort of rating system. Exceptional, but very rare lenses, becomes voulnerable to outlayer ratings. But I have this lens, and among its many fantastic properties, it is sharper wide open than any of the FA*-lenses, the A*85, FA*300, or any of the 35, 50 or 100mm macro lenses of Pentax that I have compared it with.

It is possible that the both A* and FA* 200mm macros might beat the A*135. But I don't have those lenses....still on the shopping list.

Neither do I have the 400 or 300/2.8s on your list. But the F*300/4.5 is optically the same as the FA*300/4.5, which I have, and that's also a very good lense that might belong in the top 10. The same applies to the DA35ltd macro, one of the best APS-C designs of Pentax. The K30/2.8 is a very nice lense, but it don't belong in the top 10. It has for some reason a very exclusive reputation, which elevates it above its actual (already good) quality.

A poll like tha one Adam made that elevated the FA77ltd, is in its nature partly a popularity competition. Lenses like the 200mm macros and the A*135 are too rare to show up there. It requires a lens that is both very goid (but not necessarily the best) and which sold well. That description fits the FA77ltd.

Fotnote: The FA77ltd, which didn't make it into the top 10 average ratings, uses the same optical design as the A*85, which made it into the top 10. They just tweaked focal length and speed slightly, which isn't a big loss, since the A*85/1.4 is soft wide open.

---------- Post added 10-10-17 at 11:50 PM ----------

7.7! Well, there you have it. PFs lens reviews suffers as badly from inflation as I suffer from LBA. All these users who give their kit zoom 8 or 9 in rating... And equally bad: everyone who gives a 9 or 10 to the first full metall manual focus lens they hold, even if it's an average good mass produced 28, 50 or 135mm from the 70s. That's what gives us review ratings that appears to contradict themselves.
