As far as I know the k-5 series was the last camera that allowed the debug functions related to lens eeprom reading and writing.

The k-50 did not allow this. The k-3 also did not.

The k-3 series also has the debug functions listed but they do not do anything when selected.

Very nice results!

One small detail: the time zone offset was UTC +5, I live in the eastern USA, we are currently at UTC -4 but we will be at -5 once daylight savings ends.

@normhead may be along to give you some ideas. There are a lot of good shots of birds taken with that lens combo - and many techniques. I'm not a great birder so I'm hoping one of the others wanders in.

I'm of the opinion that a flash shot shouldn't be obviously a flash shot if possible.
The less obvious the better - but that's in abstraction. If I present two shots (as I did recently) where one has fill and one does not - it is obvious to see where flash helped. It would not be as obvious without that comparison.

55-300 PLM and... Help me spend my money?!?

What lens is #1 talking about?

Sell the #2 M 80-200 unless you have film cameras you want to use with it. The 55-300 should outperform it handily.
Sell the #3 (Assume you mean 50-200?) unless you really need super light.
Keep #4 until you decide (really decide) there is no utility to a one lens option for occasional use. Also compare long ends and make sure you are clear how much you give up to use it.
Sell the Sigma 100-300, Tokina 200 3.5, Sigma 20-90 and try to keep the 135 f2.5 and see if you like it as much for portrait and short tele work as we suspect you will.
Sell the backup body unless there are places you go that you don't want to take the better body or there is a need or desire to have a beater body and lenses to toss in the car on a whim. Sell the Sigma 18-50 and 55-200 if you feel they fail on the K-70 and are not keeping the older body.

Even if you don't get a ton - you regain space and have some cash to play with.

645Pro was my goto photo taking app on the iPhone but I don't know if it does panorama. It could be used to take the original shots and manually expose them however.

Use of filters and their need and affects on modern DSLRs

Yes and no. I find the DXO PhotoLab Clearview setting to help but not as much as directly as a CPL. The clearview can often replicate some of the benefits of a CPL but at some cost to the image if you go too far.

Could you glue the shims onto the adapter... Not as elegant but the shims would stay with the adapter
And the lens would mount elsewhere without them.

The black card technique isn't something I'm fully familiar with. I assume you shoot with half the scene masked and then reshoot the opposite way each exposed different and then combine them in post?

The importance of a hood with a ND Filter or CPL?

Before you order them you could mock them up using posterboard and verify that they aren't likely to vignette or try a paper hood from here: Customized digital lens hoods. just add a little length for the space the filter will occupy to be sure of the results.

USA Road Trip

Loads of good advice. Key points I will highlight:

1) Car isn't fun in NYC OR BOSTON
For NYC parking in New Jersey and taking a train or boat into the city is an option if your car is the type you can't turn in.

2) Avoiding turnpike and Interstate travel will take longer but be more rewarding visually. WAZE GPS navigation has a bit more customization to allow you to pick a route, but even Google maps has an avoid highways mode.

3) Eat local. Use Yelp or ask around about food options locals like.

4) The Niagara falls area is nice. Stay in the village of Lewistown there's a nice bed and breakfast there. Be sure to visit the riverfront and art park. My personal view which isn't popular is that the park on the American side of the falls is the best experience, you won't see as breathtaking a view as from Canada but the park is worth the time and effort to explore. Avoid the cave of the winds, the free stairs are accessible after a boat ride and the experience is similar. You will be drenched. The library in Niagara Falls is an architecturally significant building, weird and 70s kitch.

In the Hudson valley try to fit in a trip to here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_of_Franklin_D._Roosevelt_National_Historic_Site

Also the CIA (cooks not spies) is just down the road for a very high end meal with a bit less cost than NYC etc. Not inexpensive even so...

The importance of a hood with a ND Filter or CPL?

This isn't hard to me but I've been using the darn hoods for 40 years. The oldest style has a pair of silver buttons one on each side. If you look at the hood without it attached you will find a METAL "threaded" ring with a gap that is attached at one side strongly to the hood. Pressing the two buttons compresses the ring which allows it to slip inside a ring of 52mm in diameter. Releasing it allows the threads to line up in the grooves in the ring as though you had screwed it in. The grabbing power varies but these are really strong compared to the plastic rectangular JJC hood I have for Pentax 35mm lens. The newer style has a single sliding button that accomplishes the same thing - the motion is more of a wedge moving back and forth than buttons pressing in but the effect is the same the ring gets compressed and narrower and then slips inside the filter ring.

SO you put a step up ring on - going from 49 to 52. You then put a filter in place. (Or not) and then you use the spring clip ring on the hood to mount on and off quickly with ease. As for the Ring shaped diffuser - the weight will be key. I am unclear what it weighs but the Nikon hoods are very sturdy compared to many - even with the clip on effect. Remember also that wider hoods can be longer without interfering with the optical image. A simple way to test is to shoot blue sky at wide open and stopped down and see if you see any vignetting.

It would seem the ability to program the lens ROM was removed from later models firmware - is it possible to graft back in from older models?

You might just go: step up ring, filter, clip on hood.

http://nikomat.org/lens/hiyoke.html

I recommend looking at the metal clip on Nikon hoods - the HS series clip on and off. The HS6 may be too short to be effective the hs4 looks good to me. The extra width will offset the longer hood possibly.

To be fair... I had the K100D Super - which should have worked. But I misunderstood the instructions and ended up buying a K100D on ebay. It was around $100 - I still have that camera and use it to do conversions with but it is slowly failing. My K100D Super is my backup for conversions. I will likely invest in a another K100D at some point if demand continues for conversions.
