DIY Mamiya-Sekor M645-to-PK lens adapter

I did a conversion on a 80 mm 645. All I did was remove the Mamiya mount, grind down a small ridge so it is flat, screw on a PK mount from a dead lens, then use a PK extension set without any of the rings. That gives just over infinity focus.

The results I like.

Pentax K5 or Nikon D700??? Help!!!

"I don't have a DSLR and looking to buy one. I just happened to get a lot of good reading results from the K5 and D700. That is why I am asking about these two. I probably won't be making any decision for a little while yet but just wanted some input. Thanks again."

I was not talking about you, I was talking about the guys with low post counts (less that 20) who suddenly have popped up and start giving advice when they have never owned a Pentax!

My advice to you is get hold of the Cameras you like the look of and try them. Buy what seems to work for you ergonomically. There is nothing worse than using a camera that is either too small or to heavy or the controls suck. Both cameras will be fine for the sort of thing you wish to do. The Pentax DA* glass is fine. The better Nikon Glass is very good. If you will be doing Landscapes and need a rugged waterproof small body and small lenses get the K5, if you want the ability to print the biggest size prints get the Nikon.

K-5 For Astrophotography

Over the last year I have been trying to build a setup to do deep sky imaging. This is the first quick and dirty image from my K5.

It shows the Andromeda galaxy M31. This is the largest apparent galaxy and is about 5 full moon widths wide. it's just about naked eye visible from a dark site. Distance from earth 2,5000,000 light years and contains over a trillion stars. It was taken using my Celestron C11 scope with a hyperstar attachment taken at F2 and around 560 mm focal length.

This is just one 30 second exposure and is not stacked. I just did my best in photoshop and lightroom to bring out the details. This image shows the inner brighter part of the galaxy, you can just make out the faint outer areas and the dark dust lanes, a multiple stacked image will bring out those fainter areas. There was a bright moon washing out this part of the sky and I have some light pollution where I live, so I can do much better than this. Will post another better try when I get a decent night.

Problems removing SD card from my K-5

Never had a card stick in my k7 or k5. There is a knack to ejecting these cards. You press down with your finger nail and then quickly remove your nail to allow the spring to eject the card. Some cards will come right out of the camera and most will just pop up enough to remove easily. If you just allow the card to eject against finger pressure then it will sit low in the slot and be difficult to remove due to the card door being a tight fit.

I was not too good for part of the time, low clouds and misty. Then it brightened up and the second set was against a mix of clouds and blue sky. Having done more shooting of birds since this test I am really please with the AFC of the K5.

You are right. However in defense I was really interested in the AF on these rather than producing perfect pictures. The exposure could have been more to the right. I was in TAV mode so they should have been closer. As has been said I could have linked the exposure to the af points which would have sorted the underexposure. I really did not have the time to run all these through lightroom to correct them as I though the AF was the point.

I am really pleased with these results, if you look at the full size images in my dropbox you can see that the success rate AF wise is really good.

The reason the frames are dark is that I have calibrated my monitor to give me a look that will end up on my Canon 9000 printer the right brightness. If I don't do that all my prints come out dark when printed.

So thats the reason. I just do not have time to go through 400 shots and ev them for you, I wish I did! I have a job!

Now if you wish to have a go then go to my dropbox address given earlier in the thread and have at it.:D

Went out today with the intent to test again the AFC of the K5.

I took loads of seagull shots and here is one sequence of a bird coming towards me then turning right and flying diagonally away. Taken at 2.8 and all near 100% crops, the birds were a pretty small target in this set. So they are soft because the Sigma 70-200 is soft wide open especially at 200 mm.

Then I co-opted a couple of nice girls to run towards me as fast as they could. Seems like the K5 can handle action.

All shot on continuous hi and focus priority. As I said before I am not a schooled action shooter so the three action shots OOF might be my fault. I cropped the seagull shots from the frame so they represent a decent crop from a full image.

K-5 Is there a simple way of going from HDR back to RAW?

I set up a user mode and titled it "In Camera HDR" set the camera how you wish with hdr enabled then save the settings. You can then go right from user to any other mode by turning the dial to say "M" the camera can be set to RAW and when you switch to your user setting it will switch to JPEG.

The user modes are really powerful.

I have 4 user modes set for the things I do. One for hight speed with TAv set, hi drive mode, and the shutter set to 1000th. A bracketing mode with the bracketing set to 5 shots at 2 EV steps for ultra HDR, a Macro mode set for Max DOf and my in camera HDR.
