I've been creating some v-log style tutorial videos for Skylum Software. The latest one is a shot in my home studio with the Pentax 645Z and the 90mm lens.
(Earlier videos in the series have my wife Yuki learning to shoot with the K3 and the K1 but they are only in Japanese at the moment. ) You Tube |

Hello from a fellow Pentaxian using Luminar. I just put up a post about creating some videos for Skylum Software for the Japanese market so you can check out my wife and I using and editing pics. You Tube |

I'm no software engineer, just a guy pressing a shutter button, but I think that with the latest version you can select how it views the RAW files with a profile selector. From what I've heard their should be a digital asset manager coming this year which will be awesome.

Not sure about the Pixel shifted Raws but I can definitely ask about it. I do know that they are currently working on a full DAM (digital asset management system) so the big advantage that Lightroom has over the software would be removed. ---------- Post added 04-17-2018 at 09:59 AM ----------
Thanks very much. It has been an interesting ride from shooting with the Pentax 67 exclusively (the reason my website is called TRAVEL67) to shooting with the 645D and my 67 lenses, to getting more modern lenses, and then the 645Z. If you follow your passion at the very least you'll be spending your time doing things you love.

Quick Version -
I shoot with the Pentax K-1 and the 645Z in Okinawa, Japan. Skylum Software asked if I'd like to make some videos sharing my passion for photography and introducing their new Luminar Software. So we did. The latest one's about humpback whales! Check it out, and hopefully give it a thumbs up, comment, or share! You Tube |

Long Version -
A couple of years ago someone at Macphun Software found my website and the company got in touch to say hello and that they liked my work. I'm a professional photographer based in Okinawa, Japan. I don't have a huge social media presence, so it was nice to get spotted. They asked if I could make a video about the karate masters portrait project I was undertaking. I made the video and you can find it on the Skylum Japan youtube channel. You Tube |

A few months ago they (now SKYLUM software) contacted me again to talk about the release of Luminar 2018 and introducing it to the Japanese audience.
I suggested making more videos, some with my wife Yuki learning the basics, and some with me showing my work as a photographer. They said yes and we have started creating and uploading videos. It is great to be able to share my passion for photography, and at the same time my love of my Pentax gear :)
The latest video is about whale watching You Tube |

If you have time please check out the videos (mine are in English with Japanese subtitles). If you are feeling generous, it would also be a big help if you could like, comment, subscribe, and most importantly share the video. More people watching the video, will mean we get to make more videos, and that's something we'd like to do.
Thanks for all you help. Hope you like the vids.

Yes a big typhoon is hitting Okinawa as I type. The camera may be weatherproof, but the person holding it isn't indestructible! Staying indoors until it passes then will go out and take some pics early tomorrow morning.

Pentax 645Z has arrived, and has now assumed the position of lead workhorse.
Very similar to the 645D, although the review button has moved which lead to some confusion as muscle memory tells my fingers to go to the wrong place.
Most noticeable change when using the camera is how fast the images appear on the rear screen. No looking at the egg timer symbol.
Ability to shoot at higher ISOs is great, and has allowed me to get some images I would have otherwise not have been able to take. Pentax 645Z – High ISO Performance / Dynamic Range | TRAVEL 67 – Chris Willson Photography
No scientific tests, but to me it feels like dynamic range has increased, and auto focus works faster.
All in all it is a great piece of kit. Only drawback is that my computer is now running even slower.

I just spent a couple of weeks up on the Japanese mainland shooting with the Pentax 645D in a whole range of situations.
You can see larger versions of the images on Flickr
and get more information about the various shots on my blog
but I'll start with just sharing some images, and hopefully they can speak for themselves.
Check out the full size jpeg of this on Flickr!
Hope everyone's having a good weekend.

A few days ago my 645D body and the 55mm lens arrived. I've put up smaller images on my blog and have also uploaded full size JPEGS to Flickr so you can see what the camera can do.
After shooting with the Pentax 67II system for the last 8 years digital is quite a learning experience. I am however very pleased with the results. :)

After a long wait the Pentax 645D will soon be available to photographers living in Japan. For the last 8 years I have shot almost exclusively with the Pentax 67II system and it has been great, but from next month I will be shooting with both the Pentax 67II and the Pentax 645D. The camera is on order and should arrive later this month sometime between the 20th and the 30th.
I won't be able to give a scientific review, but I will regularly post images on my blog and give comments about my own experiences with the camera. Looking forward to starting an exciting new chapter as a Pentaxian!

Just got back from a two week trip up on the Japanese mainland shooting for various travel features. The highlight of the trip was the Onbashira Festival, a spectacular event where men ride tree trunks down the side of a mountain.
I shot as always with the Pentax 67II, for the festival I used Provia 400X and used a slow shutter speed (1/60) to try and get a sense of motion in the images. This will however be the last big trip I shoot on only the Pentax 67 from next month I will be shooting with both the Pentax 67 and the 645D.

Good idea for one of my blog posts!
After shooting the film I can still get it processed in Okinawa. I use provia 100F so you are scanning a positive transparency rather than a negative. I scan with the Japanese model of an Epson Perfection V750-M Pro. (just a different model name) An Imacron might do a better job but I will get one of those right after my mansion and Tesla sports car.
I do very little in photoshop except dust removal, sharpening resizing and watermarks.
Hope this helps

One of my New Year's resolutions for 2009 was to start (and regularly update) a blog about working as a travel photographer in Japan.
Although it's not fully integrated with my website yet please check it out at Chris Willson’s Blog
Hopefully you should find something of interest whether you are a fellow Pentaxian, traveller or Japanophile.
Happy New Year:D

Thanks for the comments, glad you like the site.
Here's one of my Fuji shots. It's normally hidden in the cloud but on a few clear days it's quite the thing to behold.

Yes, I am looking forward to the Pentax 645 digital especially if it comes out with the Kodak 31 Megapixel sensor. I would love to use it with the huge 400mm I have for the 67 system and take photos of the cranes dancing in the snow in the very north of Japan.

Here's a shot of 8th Dan Uechi Ryu Karate Master Kioyhide Shinjo, one of the toughest martial arts experts you could meet.
I interviewed him for a local magazine and came away feeling quite in awe and a little scared.

I have just shot several 120 rolls of the new Fujifilm Provia 400X film. (I live in Japan which is why I was able to get hold of it. It came out in 35mm about 3 months ago and 120 format a month ago.)
Although I haven't done any scientific testing there seems to be an improvement in the amount of grain over Provia 400F. I will, however, only use it when Provia 100F is not going to be fast enough. Provia 100F continues to be my favorite film by far.
Even in Japan they haven't released 400X in 220 rolls, but hopefully this will change in the future.
Overall I am just happy that Fujifilm is continuing to improve on film rather than just seeing it as a shrinking market and beating a hasty retreat. Hoorah!

I'm originally from the U.K. but have lived in Japan for the last 8 years. I work part time teaching English at Okinawa University, but spend the majority of my days working as a freelance travel writer and photographer.
I use the Pentax 67II system which is known as "Gulliver" in Japan due to its monsterous size. Please take a look at my website Travel 67 - Chris Willson
Would love to get some feedback from other Pentax users, and if you're ever heading out to the land of the rising sun, come check out my little island!
Cheers
Chris
