I think the main point was that the art of the picture was apart from the means to capture it. The camera hardware, like a Swiss Army knife can add versatility over a simple camera. A simple rangefinder is handicapped in sports and game reserves, but if one works within its parameters, it will allow you to do the job well. After all, many famous photos are famous for their creativity, not their razor sharp renditions. Too many pictures concentrate on the rendition, not the way it was rendered. Certainly a clear clean picture can impress one with the camera and lens, but in the end, even an old war photo can have a more emotional impact even with its technical limitations.
Give someone with an artistic eye a simple camera, and compare the pictures to someone with the latest gear, but who just doesn't see the art in the scene..

I am trying to visualize the water flows that carved up those rocks. The time scale makes our lives seem so fleeting when looking at these. Even all of civilization is just a flash in the big picture compared to these events.

Benefits to Film Era Cameras?

For me the appeal of film was the tangible. In particular, getting back Kodachrome slides, and seeing the positive scene there before you, in your hand. I can still hold this (below) slide up to the light, and it was taken in 1961 with a Practica IV.
The emotional satisfaction is knowing that this thing in your hand was there at the time, and the photons that impacted the emulsion bounced of the subject, forever linking one to that moment.

I want a Rangefinder... Ricoh 500 or Yashica Lynx 14(E)

If you are prepared to accept some of the age related handicaps, I cannot speak highly enough of the Yashica Lynx. Here is an (cropped) example of the Lynx 5000 in 1976 for you.
The Look 1976 by aeomaster32, on Flickr

The light meters are old, I would not count ton them, besides I have successfully shot a roll of 24 in various conditions using just "sunny 16". With the Lynx 5000 rough handling can jamb the linkage between the speed and aperture rings. They are made to keep the exposure settings linked when one changes speed or aperture to a different number.
About the rangfinder, I have been able to clean the rangefinders. Here is my note after taking the top off my 14 IC " I removed top to clean view finder and replace some foam inside. Looked good inside. Replaced felt on door hinge. Light meter checks fine. Range-finder shows slightly more than actual distance and spot is faded."
I did buy some of those big 640 batteries, but as I mentioned, you don't need the built in meter. As with all older range finders, the focusing spot can fade right out. A fix is to put a small patch of black tape on the front glass of the view finder. One doesn't even need a rangefinder if one can guess 6 feet. From then on one can accurately estimate, and set the correct distance. The Lynx 1000 is also just as good.

All said and done, these big retail stores cannot survive on the thin margins of the online retailers who can get by with 10% to 15%. All very sad to see the death of institutions, but in the end, it is the consumer who decides who survives or flourishes.
