I queued up on the first day of release to buy a GRD1 at the main store of Yodobashi camera in Shinjuku back in 2005 - a bit like people queue up to buy new game consoles. It was a camera that really made me think seriously about photography. I've always loved the results from it. It amazes me how right Ricoh got the design from the very first version. Everything feels just right about it.

I was always more impressed by the APS-C GR in theory than really compelled to buy it. By the time it came out, I already had a K-01 and DA21mm, so didn't feel I could justify something that would produce quite similar results. I also think some things were lost in the transition to APS-C. The DOF characteristics are definitely different on the GR, it got bigger, the PDAF and IBIS were removed, and lenses got slower from the GRD IV.

Ricoh has been hinting pretty clearly in the last few weeks that a new GR is coming (Facebook page / poster at CP+). I'm going to see what they come up with. If it's not for me, I might get a second hand GRD IV. They go for 25,00-30,000 yen, which is quite a lot for such an old camera, but there is nothing else quite like it.

In the meantime, your post has inspired me to charge my GRD up to take with me today. I hope it still works. Something seemed to be making it freeze the last time I tried to use it.

Pentax camera museum to close

The Pentax Square is still there, but it is now called Ricoh Imaging Square. It functions as a showroom, gallery, service centre and venues for seminars, as well as selling merchandise and reconditioned items. You can take a virtual Theta tour on this page.

??????????????????? / ??????????????? / ?????? | RICOH IMAGING

The good news is that it's going to be remodeled later this month. The one in Osaka moved to bigger premises last September and looks very smart now.

??????????????????? / ??????????????? / ?????? | RICOH IMAGING

There's a third one, which is in Ginza, Tokyo. That one used to be the Ricoh showroom. I haven't been there for a long while, but it had every Ricoh camera ever at one point.

??????????????????? / ??????????????? / ?????? | RICOH IMAGING

Neither of these is really a museum, and I have no idea what became of the Pentax museum exhibits. There is a Nikon Museum in Tokyo and Fujifilm has a small exhibition in their showroom in Roppongi. Given Fuji's extreme retro fetish, it's a bit difficult to see where the museum ends and the showroom begins, though.

I tried the 50mm / K-1 mark 2 at CP+, presumably at the same counter, and I canít see a sentence I would disagree with in the article. I think itís well written and illustrated. The lock up after taking a pixel shift shot is very noticeable.

As for the comments, there are a lot of idiotic ones but you can just ignore them.

The K-3 line will continue!

The K-7/5/3 series has been a kind of catch-all camera for enthusiasts until now. So the people who want a high speed camera for sports or birding have been directed to the K-3, and those who just want a high quality stills camera for their limited lenses have been directed there too. Both groups of customer were having certain compromises forced on them to accommodate the other. What interests me about the KP is that for every person who scorns it for not being a K-3, thereís another person who says itís the best camera theyíve ever had. I think thatís the mark of a highly targeted product.

What I think is going on is that these are being split into two models. Eventually there will be a KP and a K?, with the latter looking more like a D500. So if Iím right, the KP is the successor to the K-3ii in a way, but just half of the successor.

I really think people are reading too much into the gaps between models. There was a time in 2012, when the K-5 had sold out about for a few months in Japan, and the only K-mount camera you could get was the K-r. Of course there was a K-5ii eventually. The K-3ii is at a similar stage to how the K-5 was at that time in terms of availability in Japan.

Ricoh has expanded the line-up of cameras by introducing models that donít directly replace, but supplement current models (K-1 and KP). This is probably what is slowing down introduction of updates to established cameras like the K-3 and GR. I think itís all going to make sense in a year or two.

I also think itís quite possible that the Q has just been on hold and will be continued at some point. Retailers are still stocking the lenses, and I donít think they would do that if the series was really done.

My Report from CP+ 2018

Since Yokohama is an easy train trip from my home, Iíve been to each CP+ since 2013, except for 2014, when the Saturday was snowed off. Each time I go it seems to get a bit bigger and busier.

The organizers explained their plans and objectives for CP+ 2018 last December.
?CP+2018???????????? - ???? Watch
There are 128 exhibitors, up from 121 in 2017. This has meant that most of the booths have become a bit smaller this year, including Ricoh/Pentax. They have a target of 70,000 attendees, up from 66,666 attendees in 2017.

Other interesting information from their presentation was that the foreign media in attendance dropped hugely from 2016 to 2017 by around half. On the other hand male and female attendees in the 20s and 30s increased a lot, especially young women. So this has driven their focus of their marketing this year on first-time photographers and women in particular.

I didnít have all that much time at the show this year, but I tried to get around to as much as I could.

Ricoh Booth
There was no obvious change in the branding from recent years. Itís clear that Pentax, GR and Theta are positioned as sub brands of Ricoh. The booth itself was a bit smaller than last year, with more space given over to the stage in the middle. Left of the stage was an area devoted to Pentax. An equally large space on the right focused on Theta.

I think they clearly decided to push two things at CP+ this time: Full frame K-mount and Theta. APS-C K-mount, GR and 645 were there but not very prominent, except for in the presentation schedule. There was the DA* 11-18 under glass and some obvious hinting about a new GR, with a poster and stickers to make people register for the new GR Facebook page. I couldnít get any more info about the 11-18, despite asking.

I could not find any reference to Q or its lenses this time. One of the Ricoh staff was using a Q to document the event, and a few visitors had them, but there was nothing I could see on the booth.

There were a number of presentations, but the one I watched was by Yoshiaki Kobayashi on the K-1 mark 2. He is the photographer who took all the photos used in the brochure and the samples, including the wintry ones from Hokkaido Japan (where he lives) and the summer ones in New Zealand. This was quite interesting and contained a lot of hints about how to get the most out of the new features. I wish I could have stayed for more presentations, but it is really time-consuming to do that.

K-1 mark 2
I was able to try the camera with the new lens, Of course the camera looks exactly like the K-1, so there are no surprises in the design. I tested the hand-held pixel shift function. The first attempt wasnít successful, but I got a clear and detailed shot on the second. You can hear the shutter going four times, so it is not using an electronic shutter. Once it has taken, it locks up the camera for quite a while processing and saving.

In Kobayashi-sanís presentation, he mentioned that he was getting about a 50% success rate with handheld pixel shift. He knows what he is doing, so bear in mind he would not be attempting impossible shots. He said that the key to success is keeping the shutter speed high and avoiding rotational shake in particular (not 100% sure I understood this part). He also made the point that you can always extract a single raw image if the pixel shift goes wrong, so there is little to lose by trying. Another interesting comment was that results handheld can in certain circumstances be better than on a tripod, such when on a wood deck, bridge or another surface that is slightly moving.

They also had a space where you could test the low light ISO performance side by side with a standard K-1. Checking the results on the screen, you can see that the accelerator unit improves noise noticeably. I tried it at ISO 25,600 and it was a lot cleaner on the new K-1, but perhaps still too much for some people. Repeating the test at 6400 was quite convincing, showing less noise without any strange side effects. Iím not much of a pixel-peeper or int post processing, so you might have a more critical eye than me.

I could not really judge AF myself, but in the presentation Kobayashi-san mentioned the continuous AF improvement and showed some nice bird in flight images. I guess the Pentax Forums review will reveal how much it has really improved.

D-FA 50mm
The lens on the K1 mark 2 when I tried it was the D-FA 50mm. It is fairly big for a prime, like the Sigma, but not as enormous as the recent Zeiss primes. Honestly, I think some of the comments about the size have been a bit over the top. It is bigger than the old 50s, but more or less in line with modern primes from other manufacturers. I still donít think I would be interested in buy that specific lens, but I came away with part of me wanting it anyway.

Right after trying the Pentax lens, I went straight to the Tokina booth, where they had their own Opera 50mm on display. Iím almost certain these lenses are co-developed. They have the same feeling of weight and balance, and exactly the same hood, which is very Pentax-like, with the filter cut-out. They feel different in the texture of the barrel and the rubber grip material. Because of that the Tokina feels cheaper.

Other booths
I went around the whole floor and it was business as usual for most of the brands. They had larger stands than Ricoh. In particular, the Sony stand was enormous this year. Also, I really got the feeling that Sony is gaining on the other brands, based on the cameras people were holding. I did feel the booth was rather bland, though.

The one I liked most was the Olympus stand this year. There seems to be a trend towards having more educational presentations in recent years, and Olympus had two stages with really practical talks going on. They also seemed to be more obviously targeting female photographers. I think it is a tricky balance trying to appeal to both genders, while not being stereotypical and patronizing about it. Olympus seems to be getting it right by featuring work and talks by female photographers more than the others.

One sad point was that Casio didnít have a booth this time. Iím not really interested in their cameras, and not many people were looking last year, but I think it is said to see a brand decide not to join, other than the usual too-cool-to-show-up Leica, who never attend.

Overall, it was a not the most impressive show this time, but still fun to go to, and there were some indications that Ricoh is getting back to normal service in terms of product releases.

I think they understand that releasing only expensive niche prime lenses in succession would have little immediate affect on sales. Those kind of lenses take years to justify their existence financially, while a telezoom would probably be a big seller in FF and APS-C immediately.

The Tamron 70-200 f2.8 seems to have been selling significantly better than the Pentax equivalent lens all year, which would indicate that a majority of customers want something more compact and affordable. I think the 70-200 would be a big seller.

There is a reason why they keep remaking the 55-300 lens for APS-C. That kind of lens is a big seller.

Interesting to get that response from Tomohiro Noguchi!

Noguchi has definitely been involved with the GR/GXR side of things for years. I saw an interview with him in a Japanese camera magazine years ago. I think it was in the days when the GR Digital IV and GXR were the current models.

K3ii replacement

There is some evidence of a new camera on the way from CP+. The way the DA 11-18 is described strongly suggests a new camera on the way - "This lens was developed as a "new-generation star lens", which drastically reviewed internal standards in order to respond to future camera performance improvements" (my emphasis). To me that also implies a higher resolution sensor, which could be what we are waiting for.

A comment from Ricoh staff at the CP+ booth about the K-3 II successor:
"I heard that we are undertaking the development of flagship which can be said to be the successor to K - 3 II"

The official presentation (Ricoh) of the Pentax Mark II

A post about the image quality of the K-1 mark 2 was put up on the Pentax Japan Facebook page today.

So leaving aside how cool that shirt is for a moment, here is what says via Google translate. I think you can get the gist. He is talking up the impact of the accelerator unit and the rendering of blue.

Hello, it is Larry.

Have you already seen the news of the 35 mmfl size digital single lens reflex camera PENTAX K - 1 Mark II announced the other day?
When a new product is announced, I think that you will be concerned about new topics such as new devices and new functions which are inherently easy to see, but this time it is hard to quantify the evaluation criteria, so it is often difficult to get high image quality, high definition, low noise We will introduce only a little about "image quality improvement" that we can only inform you with similar expressions every time.

The image sensor which can be said as the heart part of a digital camera, its evolution is momentum that does not know where to stay, but, if you put even the latest sensor, if you say whether you can take a picture with super high quality far more than it actually is, There is none. Even with the latest image sensor, if you look at the image that comes out in a raw state that does not do any image processing, none of them is an image that is far from the picture uniformly (if you say you want to put an image , It seems I'm going to break your dreams, so I was told you no good ...). It is to make it an image that the image quality engineer develops as a photograph by making full use of the image processing engine and accelerator unit etc., but this work is not OK if one parameter is decided, Perform optimum processing individually.

Since it is all settable sensitivity, not step by step, for example, next to ISO 100 is not ISO 200, but image quality design is carried out individually for ISO 125 and ISO 160 in 1/3 steps and ISO 140 in 1/2 steps. In PENTAX K-1 Mark II this time, the highest sensitivity that can be taken quickly jumped to ISO 819 200. Of course, although it is the sensitivity that could be achieved only with the newly installed accelerator unit, this accelerator unit, the effect is not only high sensitivity noise. So, what the development team did was redesigning image quality with full sensitivity. To that background, in addition to the reputed green coloring that was received from users, there may have been a highly-valued voice for the recently increased blue coloring.

With PENTAX K - 1, we were proud that the features were good as sensors were used for the first time, but as prime we were proud to have achieved the highest image quality at that time, but we were able to confirm the effect of the accelerator in the model that we released later By doing so, it seems that K - 1 thought that the color development of blue, which can be evolved more, can be improved still more than the person in charge. And the birth of the PENTAX K - 1 Mark II is not just improving the picture quality with just the accelerator. Even after the release of PENTAX K-1, developers have developed daily technological developments that have deeply understood the characteristics of image sensors and can be used more effectively, and developers themselves take photographs with the camera, and sometimes subjects By repeating live-action tests such as cooperating with families as a steady image quality exceeding K-1 was realized. It is impossible to tell it numerically, but when the developer tells me "While the sensitivity is getting better as well, blue is super clean even if I shoot it with a slight increase in sensitivity!" I feel confident and confident in his full smile.

It will take some time to go on sale, but when I also get the product, the first thing I think about while grinning is whether to go for shooting a beautiful subject with blue.

From here:

Of course, the K-1 Mark II is the main focus, but I wonder what's going to be in that glass case at the front.

It's a more open design than in the past. They also say the will be selling accessories at a separate stall in the annex hall, which is like past years.

On the assumption that they are not at liberty to talk about future products beyond what is in the press releases or on display, I think the following questions might get some interesting responses.

"How did you decide which lenses to put on the roadmap and the order?"
If the response is from lens surveys, "Can you tell us what other lenses were popular?"
"Can we expect lens releases to speed up in 2018?"
"All your new lenses seem to be new designs. Do you ever think about bringing back the optical design of older classics from the pre-DA era?"
"What's going on with the Q? The lenses are still on sale, but there is no body on the market. What should we understand by that?"[COLOR="Silver"]

Looks like they have it on display in the showrooms already. I wonder if they'll let you try it out.

I might try to have a look at the weekend if I go past during open hours.

It's actually released at a cheaper price than the K-1 was in Japan. Of course you can get a K-1 cheaper by now, but it's starting price is quite aggressive - around 228,000 yen body only and 279,000 with the 28-105.

---------- Post added 02-22-18 at 11:30 PM ----------

Well sadly I am not at the stage where I can read it with certainty, but I think it is talking about improved AF tracking ability in live view mode and video.

- A very sharp 50mm f1.4 lens
- . . . which is stabilized, unlike similar lenses on Canon or Nikon
- . . . and can be used handheld with pixel shift resolution enhancement on the K-1II
- . . . and will benefit from the cleaner images enabled by the accelerator unit

Wonít this enable pretty much unprecedented low light capabilities?

Agreed. A month ago nobody expected any kind of update to the K-1, but a month from now buyers will have the choice of a slightly better one or getting the existing K-1 a bit cheaper. Seems like a win for buyers.

Also, as a user of the K-5 IIs, I remember all the disappointment when that was released, but it has become a well regarded camera. Thereís a difference between a newsworthy camera and a good one.

The teaser is a doctored image of a K-5 silver. I found an image that had the same reflections on it if you reduce the brightness. I donít know what Asahiman was trying to indicate by that, but it ended up being hugely misleading. Things make a lot more sense if you just ignore everything heís said recently.

I really donít think it is the K-1 refresh that is holding up the any APS-C camera. There are many dependencies with this kind of project, and it is more likely to be a component that is not available, or even just delays in getting the design or firmware right.

Honestly, we werenít expecting a new K-1 at all until a couple of weeks ago, so I feel this is a nice little surprise, and an indication that Pentax are indeed serious about full frame. At least one lens should accompany it.

What did people expect? The K-1 is not that old really. It looks like a typical ďIIĒ update to me. This is all that the original Nokishita rumor indicated anyway. All the other parts about new sensors and so on were embellishments from commentators.

The K-5 IIs was a similar kind of minor update, and I remember it was met with similarly dismissive comments. But it turned out to be a very good camera - the K-5 with the little issues ironed out. I really like my K-5 IIs, even though I was a late adopter. I imagine that people who have been holding off on the K-1 will find the K-1 II a great camera. Also nice to see a lens kit option. That makes it easier to get on board Pentax full frame. The K-1 will have to get cheaper too.

Of course, if what you want is ďnewnessĒ then this is not the announcement youíre waiting for. It will be interesting to see what else appears at CP+. I guess the pricing and availability of the DFA 50 will be leaked soon.
