Best Audio Recording Device for Nature Sounds?

I bought a Tascam DR-05 for recording ambient nature sounds(bugs, birds, thunderstorms, etc.) and it works flawlessly. I suggest getting a deadcat windscreen and a small tripod so you can set it up and walk away for a while. It will pick up every breath and little movements otherwise. Crystal clear sound.

Converting M series lens to manual

True, but the mount itself is conductive. The tape tricks the camera into allowing stop-down metering in Av mode. The downside is this technique seems to only work with the K-01. Why? I would assume it has something to do with the mirrors on my K10 and K5ii.

Another non-destructive way around the green button is to simply remove the aperture arm and spring. Then if you ever decide to sell or use the lens on a film body, you can just put the spring and arm back on.

I believe it was tHoog that posted about taping the lens mount to fool the K-01 into treating M lenses like m42 lenses, but I couldn't find it.
I dug out my taped M50 1.4 and played around with it on my K10, K5ii, and K-01 and I could not get it to work an Av mode at all except wide open.

I've never been a fan of the green button method. I shoot a lot with m42 taks and am used to stop down metering, so it just isn't natural for me to compose, focus, stop down, hit the button, then shoot. I much prefer to compose, focus, stop down, and shoot.

I may try re-taping it, but for now I have decided to un-tape it and place it on the ME that I bought it with. At least that way I can enjoy its true focal length on a genuine Pentax full frame camera.

Cool M lens hack. Fortunately, I don't have access to a drill press at the moment. I've always just used a small strip of splicing tape on the lens mount where it meets with the contacts. Then it works like pre-M takumars in Av mode, and I can always remove the tape and use the lens on my film bodies.

Who frequently carries two SLRs?

For work I shoot with a K5ii/18-55mm and a K-01/50mm 1.8. The company that I work for builds websites for local businesses, doctors, artists, etc. The K5ii shoots interiors, exteriors, signage, group shots, products, or whatever else needs covered, and the K-01 comes out for portraits, close-up product shots, and when light is scarce. People seem relaxed and less intimidated when I use the K-01 for headshots and portraits.

I also bring along my Q sometimes with the 03 fisheye just in case an interesting angle presents itself.

These days, when I'm out on the trail I try to limit myself to one body and maybe two lenses. I used to load myself down with too many options and would end up concentrating on my back pain instead of taking photographs. That said I still sometimes throw the Q/03 in my bag because it hardly takes up any space.

I just received this lens on Friday, and I can't stop using it! Works well for landscapes with a polarizer, and of course has lovely bokeh at longer focal lengths.

Some advice about buying a K01?

I've been using the k-01 for about a year now. I picked one up dirt cheap during the fire sales last spring. Although I caught myself bringing the k-01 up to my eye during the first few days, I didn't find myself missing the OVF too much. Focus peaking is great, especially with all my old manual glass. And since the last firmware update, video is much improved.

I picked up a k-5 ii a couple of weeks ago and I've really been enjoying shooting with it. So much so I'm really struggling to find any reason to hang on to my K10d.

Since my acquisition of the k-5 ii, I've left my m42 adapter on the k-01. Now it's my go-to manual lens camera.

Since the k-5 and k-01 share the same great sensor they compliment one another well. And since you already have a good collection of manual glass, I would go for it.

Pentax K-5 IIs: $699 at B&H

Ditto. Great deal. I should have seen this one coming when I pulled the trigger on their k-5 ii deal last week. I couldn't understand why k-5 iis prices were holding steady at over $300 more than the k-5 ii. But with K-5 ii stocks cleared out, I guess now is the time to move the iis's out.

I would consider picking up another body and have a two body system for roughly the same price as a K-3, but my K-01 and Q serve as my back-ups now, and they do just fine.

K-5 ii is back in stock at B&H as of 10am this morning, and there still kicking in deals on select glass. It seems to go from "in stock" to "discontinued" and back again quite often. Definitely worth keeping an eye on, if you're in the market. Mine is out for delivery right now, I can't wait!

I bought my K100D in '06 and still shoot with it today. Although it is now my dedicated IR camera. Here's a couple of shots from inside a Kudzu wasteland in the middle of the forest. This was before I bought the R72 filter. I was using two pieces of un-exposed, developed 35mm film ends taped to the rear element of the 18-35mm kit lens.

Red marks -- 10 3 ???
Posted By Chris Stearns

The smallest red mark is used for shifting focus when shooting infrared. The red diamond is the focus point. The 10 and 3 as well as f8 are red because thats the implied best setting that will make everything from 5 feet to infinity in focus. Hope that helps!

and I would consider buying a metal lens hood in place of the cheap filter.

Good lenses for video?

I don't have any A lenses to test with, but my M42 SMC 300mm f4 varies exposure during filming as does the M50 f1.4. It seems as though the camera automatically adjusts the ISO even when a specific ISO has been chosen.

The effect can be somewhat lessened if you set the camera to zone exposure instead of spot. It is still a crippling flaw that makes using manual lenses with video rather difficult if you are trying to do any kind of serious video work.

Just glue the hoodman to your eye and bring the camera up to it.
