I have a KX, and if the 55-300 lens is on, it takes up too much space in my case. If I set it on its back with the lens pointing up, it fits great and leaves room for extra lenses and flash. Would there be any issues storing it this way?

I am trying to avoid having to remove the 55-300 and put a smaller lens on every time I use it.

Question about "Battery Type" Menu Option on K-x

I would guess it would have to do with the battery meter being more accurate. NiMh batteries are 1.25 volts versus alkaline which are 1.5.

Remote control, what is this thing?

That's something I didn't know. I tried that and there was no purple light. Finally got around to opening it and checking the battery; it was dead. Tried the live view again and the purple light was there.

I have read the manual cover to cover, but if it says that remote is not compatible I might have given up. Tracked down a new battery, set the drive to remote and it works fine.

Quicksand, I thought the same as you, they must all work on the same signal.

OK with me, it is still interesting. There is quite a difference in those letters. But the Nikon is about 5 times as much money, there should be a difference.

Although in the first photos, the grey mug actually looks better with the Kx.

I tried both timer and remote modes, including pressing the shutter release half way for focus, aimed the remote at the camera but still nothing.

Anything I might be missing?

I found this in a thrift store, new in the box for $2 and figured it might be useful. It says Remote Control C Set on the box. There are two buttons on it, one has a remote stamped above it and the other has the three trees for different focal lengths I am guessing.

I pointed it at the front of my Kx and pressed both buttons, but nothing happened. Could just need a battery but before replacing that, I wondered if this remote is actually of any use.

Yes, I think those will help me, I will try them. But I think I have an even more basic question; seems like most use M on the camera, is that also a good place to start?

I am also trying to learn my AF360 with KX combination. The thing I have noticed about PTTL is that it seems to try and preserve the natural look of the scene, in other words not creating the "bright subject, dark background".

When I first tried this unit, the pre-flash was obvious, but now I don't see it at all. Any suggestions on a good starting point for settings on camera and flash would be appreciated.

KX and AF 360 results inconsistent

Thanks for the above replies. I guess the slow shutter speed make sense, I am used to my SF1 film camera that always uses 1/125 for flash. It just seems like the flash would have enough power to use, say 1/100 and an f stop smaller than 4.

Scott, I will check my settings for the AE, and experiment some more.

Any ideas on why the difference on the two photos? The only setting that was changed was in the first the flash was pointed directly at the subject and the second was 45 degree bounce.

KX and AF 360 results inconsistent

I have a KX and just purchased the AF360 flash. I have read the flash manual several times and tried many settings but am not able to get consistent results.

These were taken with the same settings: camera in P mode, flash set to PTTL and auto zoom. The first one is with the flash pointed directly at the subject and the other with 45 degree bounce, no other changes. Also I was using the 18-55.

Also the camera seems to select a slow shutter speed, 1/30 or 1/15 when using the flash in P, Av or M. If I switch to Tv and set to 1/100 for example, the camera is always set at f4. What am I doing wrong here?

I am looking for some assistance with camera and/or flash settings. The manual is not clear on this.

AF360 Problem

I have actually noticed the same. When I first put the AF360 on my KX and set it to PTTL there were two distinct flashes. Later at home with the same settings, I could only see one flash.

Read the manual twice, but it does not clearly state what setting to use on the camera for PTTL. When I tried P, Av, and M the camera seems to select slow shutter speeds, 1/15 or 1/30. If I use Tv and set it to 1/125 it always selects f4.

I have also noticed that the defaults of each mode are not much different, but by changing the individual settings of each, sharpness, saturation, etc there can be quite a visible change.

sulia, I looked at the photos and thought they seemed like home, now I see you are also in Oregon. It also looks like he would benefit from more zoom range available in an SLR. That was one of the reasons I bought my Kx. My p&s just would not get close enough in many situations.

I also found that some adjusting was needed when I got my Kx a few weeks ago. I have used aperture and shutter priority and did not need to adjust white balance, it is set to auto. Someone else will be able to say for sure, but in the ruler photos, could it be a focus issue? I have noticed that my 18-55 does not do well with close ups.

OK, so this wasn't shot with a Pentax, but it has grain and these are friends from SoCal about '78. I thought it might be interesting because I was using a Minolta 16mm and PlusX that I developed see saw style in a tray because the film was too small for the spool in the tank.

I have owned many cameras over the years, but I think the first one was a Kodak instamatic, that took 126 cartridges. Remember flash cubes?

So I'm not the only one that has noticed this seller has ridiculously high starting prices. I have several movie cameras and when browsing the listings, theirs always stand out. I tried to look and see if people were actually paying those prices, but most of their feedback is private.

I use UPS frequently for my business, and the service is usually excellent. However, post office does have better rates for small stuff, especially priority.

Ed, I understand the frustration, they should maybe have an explanation on their site that explains that rates may be different at the independent stores.
