K-5 mode dial physically stuck

I tried to search the forum if other people would have same kind of problem but I was unable to find discussion about physically stuck K-5 mode dial.

So basically is there anything I can do to try to fix this, or is my only option to send it to repair center?

I can turn the mode dial few clicks quite easily, and more if I force it a little bit. Mode dial works properly. It feels like there's something physically in there resisting.

Is it possible to try and spray some crc spray to the crease of the mode dial or is that going to do just more damage? Any other self repair treatment tips?

Thank you for your tips and suggestions

Ahh, yes! I completely forgot that K-x don't have remote trigger socket. My bad. But yes some people have managed to make an "adapter" that sits and attaches on top of the IR-socket. I know that it's not elegant solution but nevertheless.

But with K-x the main problem would be getting images from camera and to delete already downloaded files. I don't have a slightest idea how this could be done, if you can't get the uppermentioned PKtether to work. :(

Great images in this thread! This one is to the artistic side. 5 shot HDR which is then converted BW and added some split toning. I just personally like the overshot effect in this picture. And yes DA 12-24 is very sharp, which you can't tell from this small image. Oulus city hall and christmas tree pictured 14.12.2010.

pClix works very well and it's rugged and well built! It connects to pentax remote trigger socket (be sure to buy right adapter because you can get it for other brands too). You can buy ac-adapter for that, but with supplied batteries it can operate practically years.

Well that's a shame that there's a limit. That's why CHDK hack firmware and Canon point'n'shoots are quite nice because of unlimited interval shooting. Don't know about tethering with those though

I didn't exactly get how those routerboards work? Is it like you connect camera with (usb) to routerboard, and then connect routerboard to pc with wlan ?

Sadly K-x doesn't function with pentax Remote Assistant... I think K20D is last camera to operate with it. You should see this thread one polish guy is developing a tethering solution to pentax cameras.

I tried the 0.3 version with my K-7 and was positively surprised, interval shooting didn't work for me, but it might work with your K-x. Also that's an early beta stage so it might not be the stablest around there, but could work for you!

Also with dslr there's always a risk that shutter and mirror breaks during ultra long timelapses. (My K10D did well for 55.000 shots for one of my timlapse projects. post your pictures thread here if you're interested. Also it's sad that there's no option for a "forced mirror lockup" :(

I studied G700SE manual a little bit. Camera has an option to autosend picture taken and autodelete. So it would seem very good for this kind of operation.

on a little worriying note. There was no mention of max images or endless interval shooting in manual. Also if camera turns off (for example power shortage) interval shooting doesn't continue after power is turned on again. So you would need a nice ups-system alongside AC-adapter to keep your camera running.

But other than that it looks very nice, and indeed quite promising for these sorts of long timelapses.

Rugged build and weather sealing is a nice bonus, though lens could be a little wider :/

Please inform how your project goes, it sounds very interesting!

Hi what I have learned is that (at least at spring/summer 2010 don't know if that has changed) Eye-Fi card kind-of-works. But I'ts not a good system for a long shooting period. It's very vulnerable to lose network and never connect to it again before you reboot the camera. And that's not a nice thing when your camera is mounted atop of a telephone post.

That ricoh with a wlan option sounds nice. But If I were you I would first try to find out is that camera wlan tetherable. Also it depends a lot where you are planning to install the camera (is it easily accessible, near electricity plug, near computer etc)

Very nice! I tried the 0.3 version with my K-7 + DA35mm ltd. Shutter works! Autofocus works! ISO works! Shuttertime works! aperture works! file format works!

Saving is also easy, and it loads images very quickly. Only thing was that intervalometer function didn't work (author said it in the description that it is not finished so it is not a fault). Also small bugs and crashes but it is 0.3 release!

I would say that this program is looking awesome for a 0.3 release! big thanks for creator! :D

People Barbaric Photoshoot

I arranged a photoshoot to take a poster photo promoting yearly party arranged by Oulu's guild of Architecture students. Party involves participants dressing with hairy/barbaric/leather style. So we opted a style with a little grunge.

I shot this scene in a very dark lobby and it was practically black as we didn't have much modeling lights. Subjects were lit by two external flashes. One flash was shot trough a translucent umbrella providing little soft light, and another flash was shot with a cone straight on creating those harsh shadows. Some photos were exposed few times aiming the narrow light to different parts of the scene and after combining exposures in post processing.

Combined two exposures as my coned flashbeam was so narrow that it only lit one girl at a time.

Created a sharp silhouette shadow which I think looks kind of cool

Creative lightning effect to add some tension to image...

Comments please, and thank my models for being absolutely great! :D

I have similiar setup with lilliput LCD screen. It's quite functional and you can buy powerful battery to go with the screen. I have made it a sort of DIY videorig.

more info about lilliput monitors LILLIPUTLCD.com - 7" LILLIPUT LCD Monitors, 8" LILLIPUT LCD Monitors with HDMI,DVI,VGA & Touch Screen

some images of my rig.. ( I made a "brochure" I had a little bit of a bore and too much time)

Dropbox - Photos - Online backup, file sync and sharing made easy.

Basically I have found out that monitor was quite useful in one shoot in a bar where I had my camera on a tripod near the roof, and I could easily show pictures taken to crowd with this monitor.

@emr

First building is a very new school in Oulu, and I very much like its architecture! and it's located in myllytulli district

@Ex Finn.

Hopefully it's not time for snow anytime soon ;)... and for the factory shots the difference is shutterspeed. First one is 20 sec and the second one is 322 seconds. And they're processed little differently also.

@Tim.anderson

Yes I like it too, but I was too early with my shutter finger... I was trying to wait until that lady was in middle of the road and not in the shade of the building :)

thanks for comments I have to try and take more straight photos in the future!

Amazing photos, love especially the face of the bird in second photo, very determined!

third one the colours are bit dull compared... maybe strong fill light and recovery style process ? It almost seems that theres a "halo"

But very nicely done, amazing technique and lens.

Hi folks! I had bit of a bore this afternoon and I created this "brochure" of my DIY-videorig :) I'm not including photos in this thread but I believe viewing the pdf will be worth the trouble!

And I also had bit of a bore during my summer vacation before I started at university again this fall. So with my false sense of wealthiness from my summer job I started to build my DIY-videorig for my DSLR.

Well many many hours after designing bying parts and constructing my designs my rig is complete. I'm quite proud with it and it does indeed work. I haven't had time and projects to fully test it out but hopefully I will.

Rig has modular construction which allows custom layouts. It sports also a Rode videomic and a Lilliput TFT- monitor with external battery.

My videorig brochure web quality (5 pages, 2.12 mb)
DT-videorig brochure web

My videorig brochure print quality with 300dpi images (5 pages, 17 mb)
DT-videorig brochure print

My videorig brochure web quality jpegs in dropbox gallery mode
DT-videorig gallery

BTW: if it takes long time to open pdf in your browser click "save link as" to download pdf to your computer.

I can say that project was fun and quite challenge for me and I learned one thing from the project. If somebody asks me if one should build his own videorig I would say buy one ready system from the markets it's easier and probably cheaper ;)

But please comment if you found this rambling interesting

-Juho

P.s That camera on the rig is actually concealed K-5 prototype ;)

Yes i get commented and my friends joke that all the time that I take too much crooked perspective shots, perhaps I'm just that "Crooked" myself.

It's just a habit and looks good to me. So when I'm just photographing "for me" like this walk I just happen to notice afterwards that especially with wide-angle shots my perspectives are usually very crooked!

thanks for the comment!

Hi

City of Oulu autumn evening/night walk.

Gallery link for my dropbox gallery of images from a single walk around northern city of Oulu, Finland yesterday 07.09.2010.

Gear used tripod, K-7, 12-24mm, 35mm ltd, 50-135mm, variable ND filter.

I'm not really interested in jogging or other sports or exercises so It's good that I do photography because that gets you to get some fresh air. This particular walk was about 3 hours between 20.00-23.00

Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Yeah locking mechanism is a must, I just wanted to keep drawing very simple just to show the principle, But I honestly think that actual grip would be quite good while retaining portability.

This whole mirrorless thing is very interesting. I just want to post this kind of idea I had in mind. Bear in mind that this is just sketch of the method and in no scale whatsoever! I was a bit bored. this should not anyway be taken as a reference of my design or photoshop skills! ;)

I would like to see mirrorless with grip design as in this image, if this kind of hinge is sturdy I'm sure it allows compact carrying mode and very good grip when hinged forwards. And also I think I would love that grip because I could get my thumb easily in that deeper part.

What do you think, would this kind of concept work ?

Very nice firmware update! Love the new "airplane leveler". My DA* 50-135 doesn't focus with contrast autofocus, but then it didn't do that before either so lens issue I guess ;) strange though that phase autofocus works!

Just pointing this out about the 140% viewfinder

Reading the powerpoint you'll find out that this magnification is not made with imagin sensor but extra wide angle 2mpix sensor+lens located on the prism hump. So APS-C sized sensor and mirror will be fine.

So they thought this out, just pointing this out, without taking any sides...

But anyway nice to see people have really gone trough a lot of trouble with this, very nice :)

Have to contribute again with a image showing handheld action panorama with 12-24mm on k-x. With todays advanced stiching softwares you can get quite impressiwe results in situations where you really don't have the space.

I was almoste on the lap of the man in right and this image was probably 8 stiched photos @ 12mm.

Photo taken at folkrock band SNEKKA s 10th year anniversary gig at Kaustinen Folk Music Festival 2010.
