My tamron 17-50mm generally expose brighter wide open, is it normal?

yes you are right, this lens is hard to focus sometimes.
my copy has front focus issue and i have AF -8 adjustment on my k5, and it still missed quite a bit of shots, unlike my trusty 35/2.4 which has over 85% accuracy.

new lens coming out every year, it's hard to avoid all those temptation.
so better stick with what we have and master it until the gear can't provide us enough room for our creativity.

thanks, i guess i just expected too much from a cheapo lens (i use prime lens most the time)
and i think u can easily trade off your sigma and get 2 of this lens with that fund :p

i see, i guess 1/3 is normal.
i just took some shots and test it, it is not so noticeable here, but more noticeable when i am shooting outdoor (so i always use -1/3 or lower just to be safe).

here 100% crop of the focused area, do you find it sharp enough, or a bit on the soft side?

I have a tamron 17-50 f2.8, and it seems to have some exposure problem.

When shooting wide open at f2.8, i almost always get an image of 1/3 to 2/3 stops brighter than other aperture setting such as f3.5 or f8.
I used the same framing and Av mode.
Also when using f2.8, it does not look as sharp as I expect from reviews (however stopping down to f4 is extremely sharp)

My copy is a cheapo $360 version purchased from eBay, shipped from taiwan. (price is over $400 anywhere else when I bought it, but now there seem to have some japanese seller selling around $370 in Amazon)
Even though the box says manufacture from Japan, the lens itself has "made in china" painted on it (just saying, nothing against chinese product).

Does anyone has any thought?

Can't decide on the optimal walk around lens

DA 35/2.4 would be the bang of the buck to me.
it really wont make much a difference with 2.4 and 1.7, simply boost the iso one more stop, or try to hold your hand stabilized with SR on.
tamron 17-50/2.8 is another great suggestion there too, great range and great constant aperture

How to Spend $400

i would say you are missing some fast AF primes.
35mm/2.4 would be my suggestion, you can find one at $150 now. (i have one and it is still my fav)
also, with a tamron 28-75/2.8, you can get rid of your lens 1,3,4. unless you really need something wider than 28mm. f2.8 is just so great for walk around.
the 55-300mm you mention is great too, if you find yourself using long focal range often.

for me, i would switch your whole set except the M50/1.7
and get the tamron 17-50, DA 55-300, DA 35/2.4
it will be a big AF speed, aperture speed, and image quality upgrade to you.
plus you won't find yourself needing to upgrade to more expensive lens too soon in the near future.
another good thing is they are "budget" lens, it is possible to fund it if you can get rid of your current set.
well, it's just my personal thought, hope that helps :)

DoF is worthless!

by reading so many experiences i agree on most points.
i was one of those "dof" freak when i first start off.
starting from point and shoot, bridge camera, beginner dslr, and a prosumer dslr, i had switched camera 4 times within half year.
why? cause i want thinner dof!
now i've got my k5 and some fast lenses, i find myself hardly shooting in big aperture.
it simply doesn't always deliver the message, and sometimes it gets so thin it's hard to get an object in sharp focus.
it may be cool to look at a thin dof photo at first, but it gets boring quickly, since every photo looks just like a macro shot from a p&s.
but it is still important to have one of those fast lens, when you really want that kind of effect for your photo theme.

i am loving this lens more and more.
even though it is not that sharp wild open, by stopping down to 3.2 it already produce great result.
so f3.2 is kind of my new "wild open". however i can still use 2.8 when i really need it.

i am surprised that there are so few people posting pic in this thread while there are tons on lens review section.

this lens is extremely sharp when stop down, but a bit soft when wild open (for my copy).
anyways, here are some photos.

i always prefer high contrast than low.
it gives a lot of dimension to the image especially when it's in black and white.
first image is great, and second image looks awesome!
great lighting there.

I actually think the file isn't so bad.
if the harsh light on nose is a bit of problem, how about just blur it a bit?
i use healing brush to fill in the nose hard light, then blur it out in a new layer.
after the hard light is fixed, you can pretty much do anything with it.

but then again, the file is a bit small to work with.

thanks for sharing this.
just downloaded and tried it, it's quite simple to use even though the interface is very different from photoshop.
what i like so far is the skin filter (creates fine effect without making the skin too plasticky), and the grammar filter. it's also good that all of the effects comes with a brush to apply on partial area.
what i don't like is the lacking of hot keys (ctrl+z don't work omg?) and the interface look a bit old fashion.
some functions also run quite slow and takes a while to load.

i personality prefer the pp one better.
it still looks quite realistic to me, and the warm tone adds a lot of mood to it.
only thing is the cloud part where the orange meets the grey, it's a bit rough.

the thing is even with the rebate it still cost nearly $500 with tax...
comparing to the $360 on ebay (or 350 with ebay bucks), i am not sure the 6 years warranty is worth the extra $150, since the fund may get me another lens..

i guess i should spend a little more for better protection..

I am interested in buying the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 for my set up.
base on my research, there are a few ebay sellers who are selling it for the best price (about $360 new with 1 year warranty)
amazon and B&H is both selling this lens for $430+tax, which end up around $480, way more expensive than the ebay one.

so my question is, is it safe to buy from those ebay seller? (most of them locate in hong kong)
how do they get the price so much cheaper than US retailers?

Does sigma HSM lens improve AF accuracy on the k5?

thanks for sharing your experience rawr.
i have only been using pentax lens (18-55mm, 55-300mm, DA 35/2.4, pentax-f 35-70mm), and similar to others in the forum, i occasionally suffer focus issue.
and yes i know finding more contrasted spot will improve focus, but it still suffers much more than my xz-1 point and shoot.

all of these lens use screw drive to focus, after reading the comparison article makes me wonder if the problem is on the screw drive.
and as i know, HSM improves focusing speed and noise, so i am thinking if it improves on accuracy too...
does tamron lens offer similar feature? if so what is the function call in their term?

Does sigma HSM lens improve AF accuracy on the k5?

So I was reading the in depth comparison between the 2 sigma and 1 pentax 17-70mm lens.
The AF review suggest that both the sigma has the fast and reliable focus, while the pentax lens has a pretty low rating on it.
So I was wondering, does HSM offer a different method of focusing on the camera?

Anyone who own both pentax and sigma HSM lenses, what is your experience on AF?
I tried to search this topic on the forum but couldn't find any.
If the HSM really does make a difference on AF accuracy, I am getting either the 17-70mm, or the cheaper 18-50mm HSM from sigma... (I just sold my DA 18-55)

How "loud" is the K-5? and do you miss FF?
Posted By telly0050

it's actually more depends on the lens if you mean focusing noise.
some lens are louder than the others.
as my lens: F35-70 (quite loud when focus ring banging front and back) > DA35mm > DA18-55mm (pretty quiet in my taste)

as for shutter noise, it's really dang quiet i would say.

thanks for your reply.
i meant the tamron 28-75, tamron 17-50, sorry for confusion.

what my concern is, do they really make a difference on color and bokeh?
they look too similar except the range.
so if the color and bokeh are also the same, i will just choose one that fits my range needs.
