Why the 40 if...

Right, I understand that much. I'm just curious from a component standpoint why the 1.4 is so much smaller on a 50 than it is on a 35. Like how the construction dictates the size. More groups? More elements? I know it's not just about the aperture. Lens composition is something I've been wanting to study, guess now is a good time to start.

I need to learn more about lens design. How can something like the FA 50 1.4 be so small but a 35 1.4 or an 85 1.4 be so big in comparison to the 40 and 50?

All fair responses. I was speaking clearly from an optical standpoint, but the easy portability of the 40 is understandably appealing. Personally, I don't mind walking around with something as big as the Art. I care about optical quality over ease of use so I don't mind lugging around a bigger lens, but I admit I'm probably out of the norm when it comes to that.

I hear a lot of people talk about the 40, either in XS or non-XS form. it gets good reviews, seems clean and shoots well. Not bad for an f/2.8.

But, if you already have a 35 f/1.4 (the Sigma art in my case) and a 50 f/1.4 (the FA in my case), is there ever a reason why you'd need a 40? A slower lens at that. Why would the 40 also not be released with a faster aperture? It's in the same length range. Shouldn't be that hard to produce.

Just idle curiosity on my part.

First macro lens : Sigma 70mm or Pentax 100mm ?

I shoot a K-5 IIs and I have the DFA 100. It is superb. Even on a crop body, it doesn't feel too long. Framing is easy and IQ is crisp basically from edge to edge. I highly recommend it.

Sigma 35mm F1.4 - only $599 + free dock!

I just got one used for $500. It's in good shape, but it didn't come with dock. I almost wish I had seen this first! Docks aren't that expensive but all-in cost is probably going to be more than that $599.

Obligatroy "That's what she said?" :P

Ask and you shall receive. Mated to a K-5 IIs. Wish I had a full frame but this'll do nicely for now.

This lens has beautiful depth of field, color reproduction and bokeh. Here's some simple shots for now. Hopefully I'll be able to get some better ones soon.

I picked up these beauties for a total of $100 on facebook marketplace, believe it or not. They're all in great condition. Guessing the sellers didn't know what they had. Us true Pentaxians know that these 4 pieces could easily sell for around $400 (if you go by KEH pricing, among other things). Gonna have some fun with some classic, well respected glass and bodies.

Apparently a member of the family is selling off the collection of someone who passed away. There's a long list of stuff here. I see lots of prime lenses on the list ranging from f/1.2 to f/1.7. Page is in Dutch, so plug the URL into translate.google.com if you need to.

So you're taking a photo of the negative instead of scanning it? That's... not something I would have thought of, but this seems to work very well. That's quite impressive!

Hah, this would be for a wrestling show. I'll be in the audience looking towards the ring and the entrance ramp, but not too far back. Maybe 80 - 100 feet.

I was thinking the 100 and the Sigma too, but I'm a bit worried about what kind of IQ I'm going to get out of it. I like shooting it outdoors but it doesn't do so well indoors. I guess we'll see.

I used to have a pristine copy of that lens that I bought from a local seller but I had to sell off a lot of my old kit a few years back. Sadly, that was one of the causalities. I hated selling it, it was a beautiful lens.

I like what you're saying about the manual focus. As long as they stay in roughly the same focal distance that shouldn't be too hard to capture well.

Thank you Igor. I'd love to have a good telephoto prime but it's not in the cards in the moment. Do you think the 100 would be worth shooting with there? I should note also that I'll be in the crowd, not up close, but not too far either.

I'll be going to an indoor fighting show next month in a big arena. I won't be super far from the ring, maybe 80 feet or so. I have the K5 IIs and the following lenses:

SMC Pentax-FA 50mm F1.4
SMC Pentax-D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro
Sigma 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 DC
Takumar-F 28-80mm F3.5-4.5

Will that be a sufficient enough kit to capture some good shots? It should be pretty well lit and the entrance ramp will be bright and colorful. I know the 50 will perform well in lower light.
