For those of you who might be looking at a foray into mirrorless, with its fine focus evf magnification and adaptability to all mounts, s/h samsungs can be bargains. I paid in total less than 150 for my NX20 all in with extra batttery, remote cable etc. as a very worth while upgrade to my lumix G1

Belated response Andrew sorry.
Edwardian: Edward 1st built a chain of castles along the N wales coast and in mid Wales late 13th century. They are considered some of the best examples of classic concentric military architecture. More info.
There are indeed numerous Norman remains around, typically the remnants of a motte+ bailey.

Well the sigma APO arrived (post #27496), and it's a good one. But it turned out to be a 500mm f7.2 not the 400mm f5.6 I was hoping for. Anyone do a swap??

My shooting with the sigma apo 400mm meant that I was primed to notice examples of them in the listings. And surprise: a nice PKA example appeared up for auction as if on cue. It sat in my watch list and the bid rose steadily. Eventually went for a bit over 100 - a pretty fair price actually, but more than I wanted to pay (yeah I know call me scrooge - but hey, the plan is always for to end up in the photographic kitty if resold).
I messaged the seller of a couple more examples (item # 162880247141 is one). They were the wrong mount anyway, but when I realised this was a reseller just trying to move them on - his other items were all BINS with pretty high prices - and he declined to respond when I asked why, are these hazed? well...
Then this one appeared in the listing. Is that a PKA mount? On careful scrutiny - yep: white plastic button is distinctive, plus oppposite rotation of the aperture ring to most other mounts, can just about make out the -A position. The seller could only say selling for his dad don't know nothing...
Anyway I won it and repeated a prompt to check the lens for haze (for which these sigmas are a bit notorious) with my payment. Fingers crossed...

Apart from the wee issue with the pin (post #40 in the linked thread) the tc fits fine on both lens and camera

Thats a good page by Thomas Gade - heres a google translated link:

Google Translate

Interesting that he says basic eyepiece projection is the worst image quality. I should try interposing eg my smc-a 50mm - should be able to diy st to connect. I did try some images with a panasonic LX5 - that's a quality p&s with a leica branded optic, 24-90mm equiv FoV. At 90mm I usually avoided vignetting. Interestingly I don't get vignetting with eyepiece projection on either of my apsc cameras using the adapter mentioned.

No, my experience is that a scope is inferior to good lenses. I have in the end been underwhelmed with the results using a best HDF eyepiece that gives 20x mag by eye, and this adapter with a decent Opticron HR66 (old model) - soft, lots of fringing when subject to the scrutiny of 16MPx (K5)/20MPx (NX20). This is one of my better ones with the samsung NX20. Just some basic PP in faststone from RAW, mainly a big boost to contrast, crop to 3015px from 5528px , resized, sharpen a bit.
I can suggest most of the good results you see online are with scopes that cost x thousand - Swarovskis, Leicas etc...

I was idly browsing and spotted this sigma APO 400mm, sibling to the 400mm MC I posted about (#27251). So significantly underpriced as a BIN imo I decided I had to go for it. As you can see it's very similar in size and shape to the MC, that the APO has rather more glass in is shown by the weight difference: 1010g vs 810g.

The sigma history listing indicates 1988 launch (there was an earlier 400mm apo introduced in 1981, it's not completely clear which is which without pics but that one weighs ~1400g according to the spec) and 11 elements in 8 groups. So does all that extra glass count? I would have to say yes, this is a good lens. Most noticeably all that fringing is gone. These on my NX20, OM mount won't go on my K5 w/o mod/multimount.

Ha. It's Otis' maurauding welsh cousin.

I missed the tree creeper, it was there right in front of the hide - but too close to focus! But then the kingfisher made up for it. Big crop to 1342px from 5528px, that the image is decent shows the lens quality. Bean bag and remote shutter cable (never leave home w/o your bb..), all my shutter speeds were slow, 1/125th at 800asa (I don't like to go higher on the NX20, too noisy) f8 was typical, I deleted a lot of pics due to bird motion but the kingfisher poses still while hunting. This was about the best.

I'll post more specifically on the comparison between the APO and the MC.

Easy filter ring dent removal TTP with photos.

Very nice Piotrek those are attractive ducks.

75-250mm is a bit of a sleeper IMO. I just acquired the earlier version 04A, haven't tested yet. Its optically quite different to the 104A and I am interested to see how it compares.

K5 wont access largest aperture in M

Well thats odd because the default is that the lens remains wide open in M mode.
What you seem to be saying is that the camera is always stopping the lens down a bit. I also take it that you are using a lens without an aperture ring ie you are trying to change the aperture down to the max opening with the dial and ithe screen reading is sticking at eg f4 with a f2.8 lens.
As jatrax suggests clean the contacts, however if the f reading is correct in other modes then thats not the issue.
One thing to consider is that you are using variable aperture zooms, and so the screen reading is correct for the actual zoom you are at.

Tamron/Vivitar Frankenmacro?

Optically speaking, a teleconverter or optical macro adapter will have the same function on either lens. The adaptall 01F tc that you are (I believe) using won't connect to lenses other than adaptalls. the vivitar macro adapter will mount on the same mount that it is meant for.
As far as performance goes, I would suggest that the most important thing is the overall optical quality. The lens is more important than the extra optics so the quality of those macro lenses should count. However I do notice a certain amount of "mix 'n match" some work better with certain lenses than others, character to teleconverters and it wouldn't surprise me if the viv macro 1:1 converter worked a bit better with the lens it was designed for.
As far as getting 1:1 with either macro lens goes you have 2 choices: an optical addition like a 2x teleconverter or 1:1 macro adapter (the main difference between the 2 being that the macro adapter won't focus to infinity, close focus only); or an extension tube. The adaptall 018F dedicated 1:1 adapter for the 52B/BB is just an extension tube, no optics. From an IQ point of view that tends to be preferable, the IQ will be exclusively that of the lens, not compromised by more optics.
The 7 element vivitar macro 2x tc is, IMO, one of the better vintage 2x tc's (tho maybe that's not saying much). It's USM however is a built in helicoid. in other words it is both teleconverter and extension tube in one. With either the tamron or viv 90mm it will get you more magnification than 1:1.

Ricoh Singlex with 55mm F1.4 lens on a popular UK auction site.

I browse the listings every so often for full frame possibilities, the market for those is, shall we say, firm. I paid a hundred for the NX20 (after selling the software), 150 for my K5 (after selling the DA18-135 it came with), 500+ for a sony is above me at the mo....
The NX20 has a good spec., but photograhically the K5 is comfortably better particularly for dynamic range, in spite of being the older camera. But when I want to be sure of focus I resort to the mirrorless.

I acquired the NX20 as an upgrade for my lumix G1, which I still have however. For that I have adapters for all the common mounts except OM (for a while there were sellers putting the adapters on auction and I got them cheap!). I picked up PK, M42 and FD for the NX (the FD specifically to use with my FD 400mm f4.5) but have been disinclined to leak more x10+ for other adapters...

+1.

Off the cuff, from my own experience, your zenith M39 is unlikely to focus into double digit metres distance. I recall trying a konica 28mm f3.5 on my pentax, it was focus to a few m only. Telephotos however are more amenable, I have had no problem getting test pics of the castle with various 300mm/400mm, the moon however is another matter.

Looks like a collectors item to me. Most of the singlexes listed are M42. I wonder what the derivation of that very olde style 55mm is - the early nikon f1.4 was a 58mm, then developed into a 50mm. But there were a number of manufacturers of 55mm 1.4, tomioka for example.

I've actually just been putting together a review of that lens. I think it's better than indicated in the reviews but it does seem prone to fringing - see test crop below, PF against white shirt. I'm not too surprised the images with the Q don't look that great, 5x crop factor scrutiny just shows up any flaws. Very decently sharp however on apsc (test pics with an NX20, 20MPx mirrorless).

And of the tame robins, F5.6 top, f9 below, cropped and resized.

And a blackbird with my K5, f11.

I definitely get better results with my FD 400mm f4.5, or my tamron 300mm f2.8, +/- tc. But this lens has a good spec inc PKA mount and a convenience cachet, a compact enough 400mm to easily fit in the lens pockets of my camera bag.
