Suggestion Separate Leica Lens Category

Very little you say seems relevant or makes sense including "I don't care one way or the other" since the rest of your post suggests you do care, and in a rather uninformed and prejudicial way.

If you try to buy Leica lenses you will see just how competitive the market is for some of them. Or, if you really wanted to, you could have searched online for the great number of enthusiasts, articles, Flickr contributors, etc. and then offered a more thoughtful and informed comment. It's hard not to judge yours as an opinionated rant because it sounds like you know absolutely nothing about Leica (which you basically admit/reveal over the course of your post). You aren't even Leica-informed about this site since there has been a Leica lens club going on 10 years now (where BTW I have posted, as well as in Reviews). And why the straw man? Didn't I suggest it's not just about historical importance when I said, "a separate listing needn’t be merely for nostalgia or veneration sake. Since Leica is the architect of some of the finest lenses ever made, its own review category might encourage more to try and review the lenses"? Neither did I say Leica lenses are "the best" as you falsely implied (I expressed that SOME are finest lenses ever made). While I'm complaining about your rather rude post, I must say that last I looked you aren't moderating here, so seems arrogant to say "Start a club for Leica lenses so we can see what all the fuss is about. Things can go from there."

As for you "not [knowing of] Leica's in the park after 1935" meaning anything whatsoever about Leica lenses (unless maybe you are the god of lenses), I suggest you study up on current Leica offerings before you say such things. Leica R models are discontinued, but they were made up to 2009. (FYI, a number of R lenses are over 90mm. However, of what importance are gaps in a lens line up in terms of trying out lenses that DO exist???). And Leica still makes Leica M, mirrorless SL, medium format, etc. Leica is alive and well, AND available for Pentax (which for me, after the K1 came out, majorly ramped up my interest in FF classic lenses). That you do not appreciate the Leica "look" so many others value is about you, not Leica. Just like that I do not appreciate Pentax lenses so much (and that's after trying every single Limited and most star lenses) . . . is about me, not Pentax lenses. Your tastes in lenses (or mine) are not the judge of greatness, nor are pop culture opinions, or what you last heard mentioned anywhere, or experience with wealthy clients (a weird thing to say anyway)

Other reasons why Leica deserves its own category? The love of Leica can border on obsession for those who appreciate the ability of some Leica lenses to highly resolve but gently so; to produce the Leica look or "glow" as described in this article from a favorite site, The Art Photo Academy. Lenses with personality or that lend themselves to artistic renderings appeal to some of us more than razor sharpness that seems to be the primary IQ judgement standard for nearly every freakin' modern lens review in the universe.

What do you think—that this site will be denigrated by separating Leica out from the "Miscellaneous" category? What makes doing that so "special," as you say, when even Quantaray  and Russian/Zenitar have their own separate categories!

I've posted the evidence before, not once and not twice. This conversation is a continuation of my conversations with these members from a while back. We do not agree because they don't experience the same issue that I do, and apparently I cannot talk about this issue because I'm somehow lowering the value of the brand. I'm not exaggerating, read the whole thread above (at least last two pages).

I fail to see how I'm considered being disrespectful when I'm bluntly being told that I annoy someone by just talking about my issues (same user that accused me of lying about another issue in another thread, with 0 evidence on his part).

Dafb, there is no suggestion that the Instagram photographers are either actually stupid or don't know their camera or craft.

Alex Cooke observes the trendiness of wide open shooting and for satire purposes assumes they don't actually know any different. 'Ross' is fictional.

Look at the tag at the bottom of the article. It says 'Humor'.

IIRC, Cooke did a lousy Pentax review ages ago, but this is well written.

There are several realities that smartphone developers cannot program around

(1) no viewfinder - When I was first thinking about getting a "Q" a guy showed how silly hats could overcome the lack of a viewfinder. After 3-1/2 years of experience with my Q-7, I can say with certainty that he was wrong. In the sun and certain other circumstances, nothing can replace a real viewfinder.

(2) soft controls -no one is going to tolerate lots of buttons, dials, and levers on a phone, so they use soft controls and make claims for them, but nothing can replace real controls

(3) interchangeable lenses - when I first went digital, I tried a compact camera - one that had all the features of an ILC but had only one lens, and that built in. 9 months later, I declared that to be a failed experiment. In Fifty years, I have had only two cameras that I declared to be a "failure"- one that died after 18 months, and the compact camera.

What is wrong with you guys?

I tried very hard to come up with a reasoned and logical assessment of what I have personally seen and done, based upon my needs as a photographer. I OWN/OWNED BOTH CAMERAS, and have many sample images.

So, what is the majority response?

I am a troll, an agent of DPR, don't know what I am doing after 40 years in photography and 20 years doing astrophotography. I currently own an extensive line of Sony and now Pentax cameras and lenses. I have owned and used, and am quite familiar with Olympus, Canon platforms. I write software, some of it for imaging.

I expected better, but, it seems like the fanboys have nothing better to do.

The manuals are structured very differently and are designed to detail each feature of the equipment in order, and grouped as they appear on the actual camera .... eg each aspect of the Status Screen, the Menus, the Modes, Custom setting etc. But we rarely work with a camera in practice by going through things in sequence like this .... in practice we pre-set and decide in advance, and have a small range of specific aspects that we take control of and adjust depending on the photographic situation. The 'WHY' becomes just as important as the 'WHEN' and the 'HOW'. These aspects are not dealt with by manuals, so these sorts of book are great to relate the practical real world application to the knowledge and understanding of the camera.

I have the Magic Lantern guidebook to the K7 which I devoured many times over when I first got my camera, and in many ways that sort of format inspired my own writing of the Guides to the Pentax Flash System.

I think your title for this thread is very poorly expressed .... it conveys a negative impression. Quite clearly there is no question that the eBook offers excellent value for money.

Is Sony's "Pixel Shift" an original idea or is it not?

Going back to the original question of Pixel Shift, Olympus announced and rolled out their version which used 8 images - 4 with a full pixel shift in each direction, along with another 4 with half pixel shift in each direction in order to add resolution. Underlying the Pixel Shift functionality is the IBIS technology that provides the means for the actual movement of the sensor.

It's arguable that Pentax is the company who has made the greatest use of IBIS to enable additional capabilities - such as....
  • Shake Reduction

  • Dust Removal

  • AstroTracing

  • Composition Adjustment

  • AA simulation

  • Image Leveling

  • Pixel Shift

That is a pretty extensive list of capabilities to be applied in the area of photography (did I forget any?). Especially for a little camera company that everyone likes to dismiss as pretty inconsequential.

More importantly - does anyone have any additional ideas, that the underlying IBIS sensor movement technology - can be used on?
  • Dithering - Dithering is a technique that moves the sensor (not just a half or a single whole pixel) but about 10 pixels so as to average out fixed pattern sensor noise.

Experiences With Raw

Been shooting with a KP since early October. Got it in large part because of its high-ISO abilities, and after some struggles, I love it.

I've wondered myself about the idea of baked-in RAW manipulations. When I go back and look at my RAW files shot at 20000 or more in DarkTable, I don't find anything to object to. Not every photo is perfect, but for the most part the KP files at high ISO are about as good as what I get from a FF Canon 6D, though some are better and some are worse. I don't find any weird artifacts or other problems that might indicate clumsy processing in the camera.

So whatever the accelerator unit is doing, I approve. My personal opinion is the objection to extra processing is overblown. ALL digital images are processed to some degree by the time they become a RAW file. Pentax has apparently figured out how to do that better. That's fine with me.

I think the KP has, in fact, been somewhat ignored by the market, largely because it goes off in an unexpected direction, trying to capture a bit of mirrorless vibe and not addressing the big, in many minds, Pentax flaw -- its relaxed autofocus system. I didn't like the KP at first when I rented it for a week last spring. It's a bit weird and different from the K-5, and the battery life is ridiculous. (The battery on my rental went dead on me after about 200 shots.) But after the camera had gone back to and some time had passed and I had looked back again and again at the pictures I had made with it, I decided to buy one.

The RAW files, cooked or not, sold the camera. (The camera JPGs, by the way, are pretty excellent, too -- they do a good job of cleaning up hi-ISO noise that's still in the RAW files.)

CVT transmissions did have a lot of problem when introduced. Most manufacturers seem to have ironed out the problems with them. You can still get a Subaru Forester with a manual transmission. My wife is a big Subaru fan. Been driving them for 18 years now. She got a new Outback last April. Before that two Foresters. The Subaru AWD is probably the best on the market. They have been at it for a long time. I am a big fan of it.

K-1 mark II imminent

I read a lot of comments about slight and unnecessary improvements and not understanding why the mkII model was brought to us etc.

Why don't you wait 3 more days to see what it will be released and whether that might be of your intererest or not.

As for the slight improvements, I don't see them as slight (AFAIK). There are new designs that give new possibilities. When you have a camera with excellent IQ and you further improve its strengths we might talk about a new version of the K-1 that sets new standards in FF sensors/cameras. Pentax has limited resources and a very different apporach in its business. People that ask Canon/Fuji strategies from Pentax are living in another universe. You can find people that had the chance to talk with Ricoh-Pentax top management and they can convey their rational (if it's not obvious from the products). What REALLY counts for me is that they pay much attention to us the Pentaxians (they're supporting their base) and this strategy seems to go on. This is happening in such a great level only in Pentax land.

I will wait for the announcement and after that I can comment again.

But I haven't seen anyone bashing the equipment. I've seen (rightly deserved) harsh criticism of some really stupid business moves by Ricoh.

I don't see anyone denying that Pentax builds high-quality, durable cameras that blow away competition in the same price range in these areas (and often in features too). That has nothing to do with pointing out what appears to be one business misstep after another.

Maybe the "Pentax can do no wrong" label isn't the right one. Maybe what it actually is, is an air of defensiveness that lashes out against legitimate and deserved criticism.

Chris Mac - I’ve seen a number of your posts on this forum of the other in the last week or so. Your complaints about Ricoh/Pentax seem to boil down to the following.

You think the KP is intended as a top-of-the-line APS-C and it is not an acceptable successor to the K-3 ii
- The press release for the KP said in the very title that it was a “mid-class” camera. You can see it here: PENTAX KP A mid-class digital SLR camera, featuring a new APS-C-sized image sensor and super-high-sensitivity night-scene snapshot photography at ISO 819200 in a newly designed, compact body?RICOH IMAGING
- The K-3 ii has coexisted with the KP for a whole year year. It has only just been discontinued, but remains available.
- I think it’s obvious from the marketing pages and video that the KP is targeting a different kind of photographer, and designed to be used with the smaller lenses, which are a long-standing Pentax selling point.
- The KP’s price peers are the Nikon D7500 and the Canon 80D. Comparison of those cameras shows the classic differences in build and capabilities between the brands, but I think on balance the KP is entirely competitive with them.

You think Ricoh is backing away from APS-C and focusing on full frame too much
- The last three products Ricoh released are APS-C products (K-70, 55-300PLM, KP), and of the two future lenses shown, one of them is a high-end APS-C lens.
- Pentax and the few people who seem to have some inside knowledge have stated that they will not reduce their commitment to APS-C.
- There are not many lenses on the APS-C roadmap. However, when APS-C lenses do come, they usually come without pre-announcement, because they are replacing an existing model.
- In comparison, Nikon has a very mixed history with DX format. It has formed a large part of their sales for 15 years, but they have bee pretty negligent in building a lens line-up for it. I just checked what they have and was shocked to see almost nothing but variable aperture zooms. Nikon’s line-up is notorious for frustrating APS-C users with crippled features and missing lenses to twist their arms into a full frame upgrade.
- On top of that, consider what would happen to Nikon F-mount APS-C development if a mirrorless system is announced at CP+ this year. My guess is new DX lenses development would practically dry up.

You want more communication from Ricoh about their future plans
- At least Ricoh has some kind of roadmap. You don’t see any more transparency from Canon or Nikon. They offer no indication of their future products. You only get that kind of transparency from companies when they are in a “system building” phase.
- Pentax APS-C is effectively a full system. Almost any future product that they let on to would have the potential to undermine the sales of a current one. So it doesn’t make sense to tease and leak information about new products. Full frame is a bit different, because there are some significant gaps that could deter system adoption without an indication that they will be filled in future. This is why you see more on the full frame roadmap.
- I think the issue is that the internet is just full of people who amuse themselves by trying to upset others with negative rumors. It’s not so much that Ricoh are bad at communication, as it is that the trolls are such prolific communicators - probably because they have nothing better to do than communicate. Ricoh can’t get into the business of responding to every negative supposition on the internet, because it would make the seem defensive and just fuel the discussion.

Ultimately, you seem to be building a case for yourself to switch to Nikon. It might be the best idea for you, especially if you find Sigma’s lens offerings attractive. You're unlikely to get them in K-mount. I’m not trying to convince you otherwise, but your commentaries on Ricoh are not really backed up by my observations.

I have to say that Pentaxians relationship with Pentax reminds me of a Grandfather driving his grandchildren on vacation. They are in the back seat yelling periodically, "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" While he silently drives at 35 miles per hour towards a place that they are really going to like. The combination of the Grandfather's silence and his slow driving slowly drives his grandchildren crazy.

The analogy is not perfect, but certainly the things that bother us the most are the lack of communication combined with a slow rate of change.

I happily use the D FA28-105mm on the K7, and I think anyone would be hard pressed to find any disadvantages to it. Indeed, one big advantage to it is that I won't need to buy another wide to mid-tele zoom if I eventually get a FF Pentax camera, something that figured in my reasoning when I bought the lens.
