Lenses that set Pentax apart of the competition

DA21mm Limited. The best lens for street of any APS-C system. Small, light, incredible construction, awesome colours, great rendering. Forget the lens correction profiles... it doesn’t need it; bags of character.

No, you're right. I think most of the time, adapting lenses comes at either significant cost or significant compromise. The DA21mm is a fantastic lens, my favourite of the limiteds (despite generally being regarded as the weakest of the bunch) and it pairs great with any of the APS-C K-mount bodies.

What led me to investigate Fuji was that the mirror-shutter mechanism on the K-30 has a hard, clipped character which makes it sound louder than it really is and, after putting a good few rolls through an old Olympus Trip 35, I had decided that there was a real benefit in being able to see outside of the frame for the type of photography I really like (hence X-Pro 1 and the OVF). I could have gone K-5/K-3, but they are both much more camera than I need and I didn't want the extra weight.

When I consider the original launch price of the X-Pro 1 + 23mm f2 Vs K-30 + 21mm limited, there's really no contest. Pentax wins on IQ:cost basis hands down, with virtually no compromises in any of the areas where it counts. I would say the K-30 even feels more robust than the X-Pro 1, despite it not having an all-metal construction.

Maybe I should just get a PK => XF mount adaptor with approximate aperture control, busk my way to somewhere around f8 and have – nearly – the best of both worlds? :D

Very hard to say. Shooting both at f8 and above (which is what I usually do), they are pretty comparable in terms of sharpness. You might see a difference if you were mounting either lens on one of the new 24mp bodies (X-Pro2/K-3) but, on 16mp there is no discernible difference at normal viewing sizes and distances. Wide open, I still don't think I have front/back focus adjustment quite right on the DA21mm and it's nice not to have to worry about this with the XF 35mm on the X-Pro 1. The colour on both is fantastic. DA21mm, to my mind, has some of the best I've seen of the classic Pentax colour characteristics (great contrast and saturation, without being cartoonish). XF35mm is very nice also, slightly cooler character perhaps but, it has to be said, discerning what is a lens characteristic and separating that out from the characteristics of different sensor, bayer Vs X-trans, WB etc. is tricky. They're different focal lengths and so they have a completely different character, but both are characterful. Personally, for what I shoot, I like the level of barrel distortion on the DA21mm and most oftentimes will leave this uncorrected. A lot has been written about the level of software correction Fuji has worked into the XF 35mm but, again, for what I shoot I don't find either the extreme corner sharpness or barrel distortion to be at all problematic. I prefer the DA21mm FOV and, fairly or not, think this to be the more characterful lens overall.

Big advantage. I think for the style of camera body it is (rangefinder-esque), Fuji have got the ergonomics of the X-Pro 1 just right. That said, do love the deep generous grip of the K-30...

I continue to enjoy both, but one is going to have to go sooner or later...

I'm in much the same boat. Tempted for a long-time and caved when I saw the recent close-out prices on the final few X-Pro 1 refurbs. I've now got two systems on the go, neither of which are entirely perfect (both are pretty close though) and neither of which I'm prepared to part with (yet).

X-Pro 1 + 35mm F2 WR - OVF with overlays and being able to see beyond the frame is fantastic; less weight is great; JPEGs are lovely; highlight recovery in RAW seems (subjectively) to be better than my K-30; 35mm F2 WR is a lovely lens (though I'll soon chop it in for the 23mm F2, which is my preferred focal length); shutter is significantly quieter than K-30... all in all, lots to like. It's quirky and slow at times but, I'm an amateur, I shoot one way only (candid street, zone/hyperfocal focus) and it works well for me. It's also great to be able to look down at the camera and quickly know where I'm at with shutter speed/aperture.

K-30 + DA 21mm Limited - Weather sealed is a huge plus (the 21mm has also proven it can survive a few drops of rain), AA adapter is fantastic (I sometimes go a whole week of shooting 1-2hrs per day without charging my Eneloops) and the DA21mm is by far and away my favourite lens ever (it's not pixel-peep perfect, but it hits a real sweet spot between 28mm and 35mm equivalency – to which FA31mm users will also surely attest – real distance scale, amazing colours and rendering etc.).

Maybe I should just throw it all in and go X100... I suppose what I'd like from Ricoh is a GR with a decent OVF/EVF and a DA21mm slapped on the front.

Am assuming that the absence of an eyecup mean that this will have larger magnification and viewport than can be accomodated by existing APS-C series eyecups.

The control layout looks like it could bring some real improvements, reducing reliance on menu settings via rear LCD. The grid setting on the right-hand dial is most intriguing. Am hoping that one of the key differentiators will be an innovative hybrid OVF/EVF with information overlay. Live histogram, bright/dark area warnings and/or focus peaking in the vewfinder anyone? :)

Slash the prices dramatically on the 645Z body and/or introduce a stripped-down 645 offering to lure current pros using 35mm eq. away from 1DX/D4S?

+1

I play fast and loose with my DA21mm in our long, wet winter months. I'm gonna come unstuck one day, no matter how diligent I am about shielding it and wiping it down between shots.

A slightly larger DA21 with WR and f2/2.4 max aperture would be great, and I could handle it being DA35mm LTD size to accommodate that.

Looks to me like a slightly thinner (more pronounced mirror box protrusion), narrower (virtually no left-side hump when viewed from the rear) response to Canon's SL1/100D. One for the very entry-level crowd. Possibly a smaller, but higher-res LCD display on the back?

Not sure what they're thinking in terms of design. The e-dial looks like a straight lift from an Olympus OM-D or Sony NEX. The metal trim (right-side) seems a bit of an afterthought as well. I wonder also, how easy it is to accidentally move that rear mode dial when the camera is gripped?

On the whole though, I don't immediately dislike it. Needs to be bundled with something smaller than the 18-55mm though. Do another run of the 40mm XS and chuck that in instead of a kit zoom, maybe.

The memory dump stuff seems as though it might be an area where non-devs can help; producing an index of special locations for particular functions and adding that to the wiki. Could that be useful?

Happy to run pre-alpha stuff and do testing on my K-30 if anyone can help me with compiling the code on Mac.

Shodan, this is incredible stuff. Keep going, and do let us know what any of us can do to help.

Exactly! I think it's probably very easy for non-technical folks, such as myself, to underestimate exactly how much work is involved in hacking firmware.

Shodan's been really good at keeping people updated, but I think progress may be slow just because it's only really him (correct me if I'm wrong) that is actively working on developing the code. I'm not sure there's much for non-technical users to play around with at the moment. It really needs more devs working on it, but with Pentax having a much smaller user base than Canon, one thing's for certain: this won't be moving at Magic Lantern speeds.

Shooting video with Pentax cameras. Tips, video looks, camera options, etc.

In their testing of the K-01, Imaging Resource observed a difference in bit-rate (Mbps) depending on the frame-rate selected. Not hugely variable, but worth noting (when you're dealing with such a heavily compressed codec, every little helps!) and this probably also holds true for K-30 as well, given that they share essentially the same guts.

---------- Post added 08-01-14 at 08:17 AM ----------

OK, so here's a question...

Purely in terms of maximising data-rate and minimising compression artefacts, and lets also set aside for the moment any considerations regarding the creative or technical limitations this may put on your available options in post, is there any advantage to be had in shooting direct to a tweaked-to-taste B&W picture style in-camera?

I'm wondering if that limited 20Mbps can be put to better use if it's just mapping luma info and not chroma, though I have no idea what the processing pipeline is like and whether or not this would realistically bring any benefit. Any thoughts?

My bet is: it's a second shutter button. Check out the finish on the top-panel shutter button; it has the exact same black inlay as the button that appears on the front. Maybe an effort to address some of the criticisms about the Q's ergonomics?

How's about Pentax's first camera to feature semi-pro, 4K video recording? A high quality, über portable package with a great lens line-up. They'd sell truckloads and maybe even take a slice of the GoPro market if they were to also release a suitable range of accessories.

12MP is getting a lot of love on the Sony A7S, in terms of what it means for moiré, aliasing etc. Could this be done in a Q-sized package? Dunno. Maybe...

Third-ed! :-)

Picked up a K-01 just recently (secondhand, at a price too good to pass up) and have been absolutely bowled over by it. It's been said before but, it looks far better and feels much better in the hand than any images would have you believe. Shot it on holiday, strap-free, with just the 40mm XS (really hope that XS lens series gets a reboot at some point) and it was comfortable for much longer than any camera dubbed "The Brick" should have been. Love how quiet the shutter is compared to my K-30. Comfortable, intuitive, stellar image quality and great fun to shoot with.

@kadajawi: I totally agree that it's unrealistic. I still think it's worth putting out there. Magic Lantern and the GH series surely brought users to Canon and Panasonic that might otherwise have spent their money elsewhere. Perhaps not in as great a number as I'm imagining, but nonetheless. Currently, I choose Canon for work and Pentax for pleasure. Forget FF and all the cyclical discussions that accompany it, something from Pentax that'd just stand-up against a 7D+Magic Lantern would be great.

Or, maybe I should quit wishing and just find myself a less fiddly PKA to EF-S adaptor ring. :-)

Well, this image didn't make the cut but it was still fun to take part. This is the first photo I've posted to the forums, and so it was nice to receive some feedback. Post processing was Snapseed on iPad (hence the lo-res of the image on Flickr) and is limited to B&W conversion, some contrast and sharpening and a slight vignette. Agree with you about the geometry of it. I did have a bit of a play with this, but it was one of those occasions where straightening one thing skewed another and so on. Thanks again for the feedback and nomination.

Couldn't agree more. As someone who has a foot in both camps (equal interest and requirement for stills & video), it amazes me that this imbalance persists across all Pentax cameras. For a niche camera manufacturer like Pentax it just feels like a missed opportunity. Especially with the 645Z. At that price point surely they could absorb the cost of chucking a video co-processor in there to crunch all that medium format goodness, no?

I'd feel more hopeful about the future for Pentax video if it were that they had just a single model in the line-up that demonstrated they could implement pro - or near-pro - level video (ProRes/DNxHD/CinemaDNG, 10-bit, <50Mbps, 48khz audio). Ditch the entry-level K500 and the penny-pinching feature removal approach therein, and give us a K-02 with an articulated, hi-res screen, a sensor that favours video (a la Sony A7S), shutter angles that are an exact 180 to the available frame-rates (mad that this isn't already available), waveform monitoring in live view (scopes and histograms), audio meters, a decent codec at a sensible bit-rate, a huge buffer and fast SD card interface. Forget everything else. Honestly, for me they could rip out the AF module completely, along with the OVF/EVF, art filters and whatever else.

I know he would say otherwise, and would be sensible in anchoring our hopes to reasonable expectations, but perhaps the best chance we have is in Shodan's emerging PHDK firmware boot-loader for the K-30. While I'm sure he'd say that any practical, reliable applications are still a long way off, I can't help but think that a Magic Lantern style firmware for Pentax might just give Ricoh pause for thought and convince them to review their approach to video (which at the moment just seems to be to make available whatever basic level functionality comes bundled onto the latest Fujitsu Millbeaut processor).
