Ancestry DNA test

Last year a friend received from her son (not the much-desired and heavily-hinted for present but instead) a DNA test kit. Apparently the son had one done and was disappointed in the low percentage of treasured Irish ancestry reported (along with Western European and Iberian peninsula ancestry) in the result. He wanted his mother to also test so that he could learn her percent Irish ancestry.

I'm not sure if my disgruntled friend actually did the test, but after several weeks of receiving her present, she sent the following message to her son: "DNA test results have returned and are as follows .... 55% Eastern European, 30% Balkan, 10% Hindi, 5% Other. No match at all with yours. My nurse friends at the hospital say babies must have been switched at birth. Come pick up your stuff."

She was much more favorably impressed with his purchasing choices her next birthday.

Landscape 30 minutes to sunset (Pentax KP torture test)

Rrrright! I promised a series about driving Pentax KP into a state where it could no longer be operated due to frozen controls and lens. For some reason it took two years before I finally started going through the photos shot over the period of one week in absolutely stunning conditions in Finnish Lapland in 2018. I shall write an article about this later when I am done with all the photos I would like to share.

To demonstrate the qualities of light available at this unique location, I will start with kind of harsh afternoon light which quickly turns into dramatic spectacle which then clears up when light starts to fade.

Rising front of snow and harsh wind from the east at the background:

Still blindingly bright light at 180 degrees

The snowfront rises up and starts covering direct sunlight

Magic mushrooms in the snowstorm lit by sunlight from the west

Blinding light straight into sun. Note the flare on foreground coming from my friend's Nikkor 24-70 front lens!!!

And the snowing is over but remaining clouds create some dramatic vistas, particularly when shot using a polarizer

Frozen lens surface is not very effective against bright light

And the day starts slowly fading towards the night

This is the first collection of photos from total of five which I will be posting.

None of which has anything to do with whether the Pentax lens is a straight rebadge, or was manufactured by Tamron to Pentax’s higher specifications or modified design (or not manufactured by Tamron at all).

I haven't been annoyingly pedantic for a while, so here goes. The inverse relationship you are referring to involves gross margin, not net price and is assuming that fixed costs are constant. In that case, your equation is true if gross margin was 50%, then doubling the price when sales volume decreases by 75% will result in the same gross profit. Fortunately, for price sensitive consumers at least, fixed costs seldom stay the same if sales volume decreases by 75%, so a relatively small increase in price can make up the difference in most cases. The other consideration is that most manufacturers cannot turn the tap on or off at will, so the primary concern is to cover ongoing costs in order to keep the lights on, as opposed to shutting down as soon as net profit declines.

None of which has a real bearing on whether or not a particular camera manufacturer will keep producing cameras in a declining market. The people who own the manufacturer (or more realistically their proxies, whether they are other corporations or investment funds or executives who are incentivized by stock options) determine what is required to keep producing cameras. No corporation simply stops operating a line of business because it fails to meet a performance threshold; someone somewhere is held responsible for mitigating the losses involved and an escape hatch will be opened; if necessary an imaginary escape hatch will be created. Assets of debatable value are sold or traded for other assets of debatable value, accounting "adjustments" are made after a change of the guard and so on.

If I could ever get the timing of my predictions right, I would be much wealthier than I really am. The same song gets played over and over again, just in a different key and with a different tempo.

Thanks. :) Only a 1 1/2 mile hike each way to a suspension bridge and back. This shot taken standing at about the middle of the bridge. The only negative for this old man was it's 1 1/2 miles down hill to get to the bridge. Then 1 1/2 miles back up hill to get to the parking area.

I was born at the advent of the space age, and followed the space programs keenly as a youngster and teenager. This kit was a Christmas gift in 2019! 1087 pieces. It complements my Apollo 11 Saturn V launch vehicle (1969 pieces).

In fairness, dimensions ought to be compared to other full frame DSLRs with a battery grip installed... Still, even if that combined lower grip section were lopped off, it could hardly be considered svelte. I guess those who the D5 and D6 are aimed at know what they want, or what they're letting themselves in for, and why. Most folks are probably better served by the D850 or (forthcoming?) D860 which is a bit more comparable to the K-1 in size (if still considerably bigger)...

You could say that again. Though each camera is intended for different markets.

K-1 + SMC M 20/4 @ f/8 in hyper focal ...

Last Thursday there was a protest march in Poitiers against the reforms to the retirement reforms. The protest march passed in front of the courthouse and the attorneys in their trail robes were there to participate. Here are a few images that I took for an upcoming photo club exhibition this Spring. The theme is "view from the ground" or "view of the ground" ... it's a play on words.

..... a suggestion, get a flashlight that has a long throw, but not too concentrated.

I used;

Flashlight - Thrunite TN4A ($50, 1150 Lumens, runs off 4AA rechargeable)

Clamp - Pedco Ultraclamp ($22). I bought a female to female , removed the adjustable head

Thanks. I knew their dark heads and eyes could cause exposure issue (overcast), so i mounted my cameras with a flashlight so when at a distance i could push some light into their face. I didnt expect their glossy eyes to reflect the light as it did, but i like it. The photos are an example of the flashlight setup - I love hacks.

I just bought a Rotolight Neo II. Ima give it a try with the buffalo on Friday, 2/14/20
