Yes, some jackaninny did say something like that. But in the internet era, where everyone who knows a language can broadcast it worldwide, people will literally say anything.

Although the lens is very very good, it can take some awful photos however. Case in point:

Three submissions for this week, two archival and one fresh.

First, frozen flower photography. A blue flower was uncomplicatedly frozen, light gradient provided by a single poor quality LED, and photograph taken with K-1 and M100f4 Macro.

Second, a six-foot tall flower of some kind or another, lit from above by the sun which produced an uncomplicated top-down gradient, and photographed with K-1 mII and M135f3.5 and the well-known Raynox 150 hanging off the front.

Finally, taken earlier today, a cluster of tree trunks which are plants as they were illuminated in a west to east gradient by the descending sun without any kind of obstructions or complications. Taken with the K-1 mII Ltd Silver, and the inimitable and unassisted M200f4 (at f11).

Here's a triplet from yesterday's walkabout with my K15f3.5.
Photo #1 is my border collie (Kawai) attempting a photobomb with success.
Photo #3 was a few minutes after Kawai went to retrieve his two brothers, who realized they went the wrong way 10 minutes ago and were running to catch up.

We went on a short hike and happened upon this waterfall with the sun in position to produce a fairly strong rainbow. I would have used a polarizer had I had one with me, so instead I hung my deeply polarized Julbo Colorado sunglasses in front of the lens and, with my trusty and brand new (and highly recommended) Peak Design travel tripod, snagged this six second exposure. I got some pixel shift shots also, but haven't given them a thorough review or processed them yet.

This is just a fun thread for discussion, and I think most have appreciated the mood of this thread. If you don't like your choices, do as Iheiramo did, and make up your own! We're not re-writing the photographers' DSM here, just playing around.

Me: "Bum with a Camera - Subject owns cameras and many lenses, probably a gear junkie, but also takes some pictures. Subject carries gear everywhere, even to the grocery stores. Subject's style therefore is to photograph whatever presents itself, and post-work is fairly routine bumps in saturation/clarity/sharpening for web display and small prints. Subject's output is appreciated by nearly no one because of little aesthetic or documentary value."

I wonder if above fits anyone else?

As I read the article, I would usually react with, "yeah, that's me about X% of the time, except for that part which I never do" for almost each entry. I set the poll up so two choices could be selected, and I picked "Hunter/Gatherer" and "Anarchist" because I'm not very technical about setting up shots (ie, not a Sportman or Director) and I don't like to spend tons of time in post (ie, def. not an Illustrator). I do basic planning, try to limit to themes (ie, 52Frames project, weekly assignment material, imposing self-limitations wrt gear or technique). Of course, I've never earned a single cent off photography.

Thanks. I don't have mine on display, but I used to. I still occasionally get the urge to find a glass cabinet of sorts and clear some space somewhere near a comfy couch on which I could sit and behold the beauty of electromechanical photo-optical engineering of the present and past 50 years. I blame my grandparents because when I was a wee lad with way more friends than I have today (but no liquor), they gave me some beatup and probably broken cameras to play with. One was a TLR with a waist level finder which I thought was some kind of magical. Anyway, now on days when everyone else are out dining together, hanging with friends or extended family, or chasing tail at the local bar, I'm at home in my sweat pants (if you're lucky) and a T-shirt staring at my Pentax collection wondering when Sandy will be by with that wine he promised me (but secretly content to just sit there and stare and wait).

Maybe Adam should start up a "Losers" subforum and sequester me there.

I went outside with my K-1 today and one of my boys found something interesting. The short detour to check it out required a short but steep climb which I failed to negotiate, resulting in a knock on the left rear of my camera and a one inch shallow cut on my hand. The hand will heal, but the camera had a couple of short gouges in the metallic frame that holds the LCD, and a couple of short scratches on the LCD itself. It all still works fine.

I've already sanded out the gouges on the metal which took less than a couple of minutes with fine-grain sandpaper. The surface is smooth, but obviously not black anymore. My question is: What kind of paint do you recommend to cover the defect? I'm half tempted to find a color like fire-engine red because (a) it's a Pentax and therefore should have come with that option anyway, and (b) to remind myself not to fall over while holding my camera.

I've attached a couple of photos I took after-the-fact. K-1 mII, M50f1.7 @ 2.8. I might have spent some more time except I was mad at myself and cussing like a sailor.

Thanks!

Well, I suppose I'll fall down again pretty soon, so next time I'll leave them in. I was just able to feel them all too easy, and I knew their presence was going to bother me a whole lot.

If you did that, I'll make sure to get Adam to give you another gold star under your name!

[edit] Upon further review, it occurs to me that my son-in-law is swimming in acrylics as he paints tiny models (game characters, etc), so he'll for sure be able to fix me up... however your gold star has still been earned. Thanks!

Both fantastic suggestions, thanks!

Imagine using it on the diminutive (relatively speaking) SLR film cameras of the day. Put a K1000 on that lens, and watch it tumble forward!
Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever used this 200mm lens on my film units.

The only other issue i have detected with this and other telephoto lenses of the era, is the ease at which chromatic aberration shows itself. If you can avoid those situations (not hard, once you know what those situations are), the lenses become awesome.
