Thanks a lot PJ1, nosliwmit, K2 to K50 and pichaser for your kind words

For the Milky Way picture I used a Rollei Compact Traveler Carbon, yes it is a bit flimsy with the K1 + 15-30 mounted on it, however fully retracted it is rigid enough (which is OK for astro)

Landscape Mountaineering in the Southern Alps (K-1 Mk II and GR II pictures)

Hi,

here are some shots from my last mountaineering trip. Our objective was to climb the west face of the Sirac (3,441m)

First a night view of the mountain from the south (with the K-1 Mk II + 15-30@22mm, 20*15sec for the sky at ISO800, a single 3min shot at ISO6400 for the ground)

From the same valley after sunrise, still with the K-1

For the rest of the trip I only took the GR II. We first had a long hike around the moutain with 3 passes to cross before reaching the mountain hut.

Closer view of the south face

West face and Vallonpierre Glacier as seen from Col de Vallonpierre (stitched panorama)

A sheep herd drinking in the lake beneath the huge NW face

After a short night, during the climb of the Glacier just before sunrise

In the shadow of the Sirac

Climbing the face above the glacier

Last ridge before the summit

View to the north from the summit (stitched panorama)

View to the south

Time to go down

North face from Valgaudemar valley

Mountain stream

thanks for looking,

Dan

Thanks pqberger for your kind comment !

With a moderate exposure time and wide angle lens, the "motion blur" in the foreground is not very noticable, especially since the landscape is quite dark. However on the stars it would be hence the choice of astrotracer. It is best however to do a separate series of frames for the landscape (with longer exposure times)

Hi,

this is a stack of 17 * 10 sec exposures with astrotracer, processed using calibration frames (darks, flats, biases), shot from the countryside in Normandy.

regards,

Dan

Thanks everyone for your kind comments, much appreciated !

The GR II is indeed a great camera, I wish it were more rugged but as it is very small it is easy to protect it under the mountain jacket or in a pocket.

Landscape Mountaineering with my GR II

Hi,
a couple a weeks ago I took my GR II for a mountaineering trip in the Southern Alps.

Large crevasse on Glacier Blanc at dawn:

Our main objective, Barre des Écrins (4,101m) as seen from Pic de Neige Cordier (3,614m), with the wide angle conversion lens:

This is the highest peak of the massif, with a beautiful snowy north face.

After the first part of the climb (Barre Noir couloir) we have reached Brèche des Écrins just after sunrise

From there one can see clearly the rest of the itinerary. First there was a traverse on the glacier till we were just under the summit high face

followed by another couloir straight to the summit.

View of the lower (and easier) Dôme de Neige during the final ascent

Here is another team on the summit ridge

View from the summit

During the descent

After the descent here's an overall view on the north face. The Barre Noir couloir that we climbed before dawn is on the far-left. One can see also the huge overhanging seracs

And finally the glacier tongue before coming back to the car

thanks for looking,

Dan

It is not as bright as it used to be. It is roughly under the Big Dipper (Ursa Major). A pair of binoculars helps a lot

Thanks ! Yes I did use astrotracer I forgot to mention it....

The calibration frames are as follows:

Dark frames: same exposure and ISO as your comet shots, lens cap on (to remove thermal signal from the sensor)
Flat field frames: shot an evenly illuminated target (I use an electroluminescent panel) at base ISO, with correct exposure (to correct accurately vignetting)
Bias frames: shortest exposure at base ISO, lens cap on (to correct the zero value of each pixel). They are needed for an efficient use of flat field frames.
