Is this sharp? - Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED WR

All 55-300 should improve quite a bit going from 300mm to a little bit less... it's probably the lens' weak point, and I only go there if absolutely necessary... you still have an advantage over the, say, 55-200.

Try to do some tests with a close and a distant target at different apertures (test charts are ideal... high contrast and fine detail), and manual focus in magnified LV, so you get a feel for the DoF at each distance, how the lens performs (also center vs. sides vs. corners) and which aperture is the best tradeoff between sharpness/DoF/diffraction.

I've found f/9.5 to be just about the sweet-spot on mine, at 300mm and, say, 5-10m, but of course YMMV.

Traveling with DA* 50-135 or 55-300 PLM?

My travel lens has been the 18-55 WR for quite some time.

I also did some trips abroad with only the M 28/3.5, and brought back very nice pictures.

Then I bought an UWA and now my travel kit consists of Sigma 10-20/3.5, 40/2.8 XS and M 100/2.8, which is very nice because I've got a reasonably large FL range covered with three lenses, and two are maybe the smallest for their FL.

If I had had money to splurge back when I started, I'd have bought a 18-135 as well, but after the 16-85 came out, that one took the place of "dream one-lens setup" in its place.

K 01 coming soon, advice sought

Yup I do.
Don't have much time now, but just compare it with a GH2 (even slightly older) and it's night and day.
Recording times, binning, quality, features...
I've got my K-01 years ago, it's my most used camera, but for video it doesn't cut it.
Short clips in good light, yes, of course, but then again every camera/cellphone can do that.

Video is garbage. No, seriously, I mean it. Use your cell phone.

K-01 is a dream travel camera, it's easy to use, and it's perfect with manual focus lenses.
Not too long are preferable, unless you use an LCD loupe.
Keep neck strap reasonably short, pull it taut against back of neck, MF with LV magnification, shoot.

Copying to computer - pop the card or USB?

Uhm... I think I'll ask for advice...
K-01 USB is shlooow... but I had a corrupted SD with a pen-type USB SD card reader (which died and messed up the card).
The only other reliable SD "reader" I have is my Zoom H4n, but it's not super-fast either.
Question: which SD card reader do you use (I don't trust the one that came with my PC)?

I'd try adhesive foam strips for stove tops.
Inexpensive and easy to find.

Left handers are ignored

I'm a violinist by trade... I have some left handed colleagues, but there isn't and never will be a "left-handed violin" fit for a workplace.
Think orchestra...

So in essence... guitars yes... violins no (except factory made junk, maybe... but those are no "violin"...), mouse yes, cameras no...

Oh and I'm right handed, but I always tie my tie with my left hand... learned that way watching my dad standing in front of me (that was some time ago...) as if I was looking in a mirror, and I never did it differently since.

Why Ricoh should not let themselves be lured into the built-in obsolescence game

Planned obsolescence - Wikipedia

Releasing a new model doesn't automatically make an older one non-functional.
It doesn't even make it obsolete, provided that the whole sector (and by this I mean from content production to fruition through processing).

1080p video is on the verge of being obsolete, because we now have 4K cameras, 4K software, maybe some channels (?), Tvs, etc.

I'd say that one of the main obsolescence threshold for pictures is about 8 MP, give or take some cropping leeway.
After all, very few people print, even fewer print big, and 8 MP take full advantage of a, say, 50" 4K TV.

I mean... the "Market" can well say: "Your old camera is OBSOLETE! it's the wrong color", but it's up to (intelligent) people not to believe it...

Doesn't even look like the height is adjustable... not all smartphones have the same FoV...
And... 40$ "attractively priced"? For a LED light and some cardboard? not even batteries are included... :(

...I should get into this business as well, I'm good at DIY! :p

They could be hot pixels, stuck pixels, whatever.
The hot temperatures in this time of the year aren't helping.
But, as I said, it's nothing to worry about.

Some PP software automatically disregard those, if you shoot RAW.
Just like Adam said, no big deal at all ;)

Silly HD D FA 150-450mm question on zoom

There's another factor - apart from crop factor and PP cropping - and that is the fact that focal length numbers are only true at infinity.
Generally, the closer you get to your subject, the "shorter" the FL becomes, due to the way the zoom and focusing works.
There were some threads about this WRT the 60-250, IIRC, where this phenomenon was quite apparent.
A picture of an oven was involved.
