Taken a couple of days ago on a very overcast and dull day, at Kielder Birds of Prey Centre.

After several attempts, I managed to catch this handsome and rather chatty fellow in a suitable pose. The HD DA55-300 was stopped down to f/7.1 as a compromise between resolution vs light gathering, and shutter speed of 1/125s was about as low as I could go due to the bird's frequent minor head movements. Alas, in the available light, TAv gave me an ISO of 4,000 - hardly ideal for the subject matter, but a little colour noise reduction and a few other tweaks in post were enough to smarten things up and produce a usable image. Processed in Darktable.

Its been a very wet week here in the UK (my Brother-in-law's farm is under 3 feet of water) but I did manage to get out a couple of times. One from earlier in the week then a few from the Mid Hants Railway's "War on the Line" event.

Very nice photos! That is a great stretch of coast right around the Point Arena Lighthouse. I always look forward to going up that direction.

Rhino and Lion Park, West of Johannesburg, and its feeding time for the lions, and they are familiar with the vehicle that comes with big chunks of meat at feeding time. Here one of the males comes rather close to the vehicle. The ensuing scene was something to behold.

Wow! aacb, where were you when you caught the bird catching the frog? What a fortuitous moment! Made even better by the turtle in the background!

Here's one that's pretty self-explanatory. I love this kid's big cow eyes.

Interesting and difficult theme for me, usually I go for the opposite of "busy" in photography. I'll choose a picture from the ever lively streets of Galway, Ireland. This small city is so full of life!

A "star party" night at Griffith observatory, where amateur astronomers set up their equipment to share with visitors. Tallest LA skyscrapers in background, astronomers' monument with 6 famous astronomers left foreground, and a statue of actor James Dean right foreground. It is a 20-minute hike up the fire-road behind the parking lot to this viewpoint, another 1/2 hour to the top of Mt Hollywood. The Hollywood sign is on the next peak west, Mt. Lee.
Here's the direct link for people with AV issues :-)

We don't see foxes very often so this early morning roadside encounter with three of them was a real treat. I think this one was the youngster.

I am not much of a foodie, when it arrives I tend to eat without capturing an image to look at later so this is courtesy of my Wife who does like to have something to look back on. Taken with her little Canon unfortunately but you can see my Pentax is there ready if I decide I need it.
I think this was called a New York Hotdog. Melted cheese always helps my appetite!

What's up with Nik Collection by DxO?

No actually DXO acquired NIK Collection and incorporated the NIK U Point technology into DXO Photolab which has recently been updated free to purchasers of Photolab. I have received two updates since I bought my version of Photolab last year when it was introduced, the last update was a major one with additional U Point features. I suspect DXO bought it to block Adobe from acquiring the U Point Technology. You can bet that Adobe would not have continued to release a standalone version so others could buy the collection but would have restricted it to their products alone. Nothing wrong with offering the software to Adobe users and everyone else, $69 is a whole bunch better that the original NIK Collection pricing.

Older versions of NIK Collection still work standalone with JPEG, and if you assign the collection to a folder on your desktop you can then drag a JPEG and drop it onto any of the modules in the collection to open that module with the JPEG and edit the JPEG then save it.

As for DXO going bust that's pure BS the company is doing OK and has the absolute best Raw noise reduction out there right now.

Lovely photos Kerrowdown but I'm none the wiser where you are. I'm thinking it must be Scotland?

Sealonsf... I rented out a fishing cottage outside Clifden in Galway 2 years ago, it was a photographer's heaven, Connemara has an outstanding landscape and it has dark skies for astrophotography/nightscapes. I'll dig some of these out and post them soon. I don't have them on this small tablet device.
