Lovely!
Only the dog doesn't look too smitten on it! :p

All this new activity in here really makes me want to whip out my petzval lantern lens again. Maybe tomorrow. (and find more lenses..)

Don't worry Dave, I've got a bicycle standing in the kitchen and plenty of others in the cellar. ;)

Well spotted, it's a 500cc single, 4 stroke, 4 valves. You're right with British too, it's a Rudge Special from '37.

Heh nice! That Matchless sounds very interesting!

Being totally 'civilised' is overrated ;)

I was at a "Grand Prix Memorial" event today and founds some Rudge owners that will help out with some parts :o (I've got more than on the picture obviously, but a lot is toast!)
Took 570 shots today so I'll have more stuff to share later :)

Well what shall I say?
I finally found a solution to LBA and GAS!

It's called buying an old motorcycle restoration project and displaying it into your room to remind you that you're broke.

Worked a charm, I've already visited two second hand shops since and didn't buy with anything at all!

Now where can I get the engine rebuilt, magneto and dyno refurbished and gearbox replaced?..

You could of course try to repair it yourself. Can't break it more I guess. But the chances that it isn't completely fried are very slim I think. :(

Not sure I understand the policy on concerts, we have them here too (Switzerland). Can't figure out what in what way a camera with a detachable lens is different to any other camera.

Thanks.
I'd love to have another shot at it but they chabged the streetlights on the left to LEDs...
Very tastefully upgraded though!

Just quickly developed in camera and it looked decent enough on my phone, but can't tell how it looks on a larger screen. You tell me! :p

Took me a while to get the framing 'right' with the palm and the tripod is full of sand now lol

After lots of persuasion and with some MEK involved I got the name-ring to unscrew.

Thanks everyone and especially Digitalis for providing the 'interior' photos! :)

Just tried that and it's as clean as a whistle.
I got it dirt cheap NOS from a shop that closed and the owner had a whole warehouse full of old stuff so no big loss. There's not much info on it around but mine certainly does not live up to it's rating here. It's fine during daytime but at night it's fairly "useless" - I mean, artistic .

Flare mixed with purple fringing around highlights. I've got another photo somewhere where every streetlamp is effectively duplicated in ghosting/flare.
But it's nice for portraits as the highlights are no issue at all when out of focus.

I initially had the feeling that the resolution deteriorated drastically closer to infinity, but it does seem like the lens simply doesn't focus that far.
(Goes to show how much time I've spent with it on the camera..)

This seems like a brilliant idea! But it seems like my roll isn't sticky enough. The ring won't budge! :(

  • Yes, everything I've got from 1880 to 1980. :p

I'm buying junky 35mm lenses. Funnily enough they all have one thing in common: I bought them in Switzerland and not on ebay from England or Ukraine or during vacations.
This is the only of the 35s that only has an issue at infinity. I believe the WEP is not the best design and glows all over the place and the MIR might really be a lemon or in desperate need of a service. (I don't use the latter on the K-1 anyways, rear element is too close the the mirror for my liking!)

I've tried multiple, none of which are genuine but work fine with my other lenses.

Failed at step one when I tried a few weeks ago when i received the lens but couldn't get the name ring to budge. I tried with the lenscap + rubber glove method. Are there any other ways to get it off that I'm not aware of?

Hello,

Haven't been around here a lot as I've apparently taken an accidental break from photography.

I recently bought a Super Takumar 35/3.5 as I haven't got a decent 35mm lens. They all seem to suffer from resolution issues, my MIR 1v is hard to focus in live view because I can't tell when it's sharpest and my WEP Weiton 35/2 has some serious highlight ghosting.
So when the Takumar popped up on the local equivalent of ebay I thought I'd get that. But 35mm lenses just don't seem to be my thing. :(

Here's two 100% crops.

Infinity seems worst:

Anything from min focusing distance to 1.2m or so seems better:

Lens barrel looks accident free but I haven't attempted to open it up as I wouldn't know what to look for really.
Is this yet another 35mm lemon to add to my collection or can something be done? I doubt it's normal as the ratings in the database suggest otherwise. ;)

Cheers

Edit: Not sure if I'm venting my frustration or seeking help, but help is, of course, appreciated! ;)

With the mount being ~5mm deep (lens side) it'll probably be hard to find one. But I suppose if it's just for experimentation and not daily use you could try 3d printing one?

Thanks! :o

I used capture one and I'm not sure how colour grading works in LR or other editing suites.
But anyways:
First: midtones and highlights moved slightly towards orange, blues have been shifted lightly towards turquoise (though the water really is that colour!)
Second: same as first minus the shift in the blue
Third: shadows moved towards green and highlights towards orange

Sorry for the late answer, I haven't been checking in here regularly lately.

Got this one last summer when I was on holidays but always was too lazy to edit it!...

Not entirely sure what lens I used, but seeing that it's been taken at 135mm I'd say it's my Super Varexon 135/2.8. It's 4x 5s exposures.

Thunderstorm was fairly substantial, the rain it brought too. Could barely see anything anymore! Needless to say that I took my gear off the balcony (had it perched on the parapet on a gorilla pod, with me clinging onto the strap).
Went to enjoy a gin down at the bar. I got that nice excited feeling you usually know from being a kid when something is going on! :D

Got two more from the other day.

Only just noticed the faint bokeh swirls in the background on this!

Really liked the colours here. The old way of spelling "telephone" in German helps make it look older. (it's "Telefon" now).

Went for a short walk along the Lake of Brienz whilst my dad got shopping with my grandmother and suddenly noticed how swirly the bokeh got in this flowerbed.
Haven't used my helios much lately and it always takes me by surprise. I think I stopped the lens down my a fraction to get a tiny bit more contrast in.

Brilliant! Really like the warm/cold contrast.

Vintage glass, RAW or JPEG?

Regarding altering the character of the lens in post: It really depends what you do and what you're after. I think colour grading etc shouldn't destroy the character or you would have had to stick to the same film and never change that. For me the character mostly lies in the contrast and bokeh (and other characteristics of course, depending on the lens!). I feel like adding more contrast can take away lots of character and I frequently find myself lowering it.

Mind, I've now been using vintage (and antique) glass for a couple of years and am finally trying to get myself to process colours more. I feel like it got a bit boring without changing much and I haven't felt like I took anything away from the lenses characters.

I might try a breakfast suitable to the country of the lens' origin someday and see what I get!

Just had a look, you're right. the mirror does stay up, it's the shutter.

However with the electronic shutter, after taking the photo the regular shutter closes on mine. I'm assuming this is normal, but I don't quite understand why it does that!

I'd not be on this forum if Pentax would not have had the "select body and grip colour" option.
My mum and me both could have a say (she didn't want a black body anyways). Ended up with an orange body and blue grips. It grew on me.

Would have bought a non black K-1 in a heart beat, but now that I've got one..
