Zoom Lens for K-1ii

I really enjoy the speed and responsiveness of K3iii. The 16-50 is a Pentax design and I would rather walk around with it and K3. The 24-70 on K1 is also a nice combo, but honestly I sold it, preferring fixed focal length lenses. So, the 16-50 will be no hood on K1, but much fun on K3. I am waiting for a *35 for K1. Next would be a snappy K1iii… Pentax has two lines of cameras and lenses, currently the apsc line is ahead in some areas.

Lens or camera is off if you see experience a consistent offset outside the range. Pentax can zero the effect. Make sure all your other lenses work afterwards - the lens should be matched to the camera and vice versa. Pentax typically asks you to send in all your lenses. Depending on where you life, this is done free of charge as long as the warranty is valid.

Get an extra roll for practice. Winding exposed film back and forth is a pain to say the least - but it’s possible. The extra roll allows you to play and find out what went wrong.

Have a look at Koenig Photobags. It’s a bag, but waterproof and well suited for outdoor photography.

Tamron: to buy or not to buy

New vs used
2.8 vs 4
Tamron vs Pentax with Tamron specs.
Long time ago, I would say: get the Tamron. Today it would be the Pentax, but only if DOF of 2.8 is not important.

What should your dream Pentax camera cost?

I would not take Sigma cameras seriously. DP1 was fun. Yes, they bought Foveon, but the concept did not excel. SD1 pricing exploded to ridiculous amounts with presentation and presentation was delayed for years. I owned many of the Sigma DSLRs and compacts - nice concept, lame duck. Sigma needs cameras to promote the sensor. Prove me wrong, but I think they keep burning money until we see the Foveon breakthrough…
I buy Pentax and use only Pentax glass. I don’t feel limited. Sigma offers a much wider range of glass, but nobody wants to rely on Sigma lenses alone - or is it the camera :-)

Erwin Puts parted with Leica…
These days Pentax DSLR is as conservative as Leicas M Series, less iconic, but very well proven technology thriving for perfection as a well made tool placed in your hand.

I prefer an optical finder, RF/SLR. Everything has drawbacks and advantages. EVF are easier to implement and mirrorless cameras have many advantages. The world is going that direction. I am happy that Pentax does not follow. Still that also means Pentax still has to fight SLR drawbacks of price for great prisms and alignment of image sensor, mirror/focus screen and af sensor planes. At some point even less third party lenses will be available for Pentax, it is hard to stay in a niche everyone has lest.

matching uv/protector filter coating with lens coating? (for new and for old lenses)

Cheap and filter never works.
Get quality MC filters. Hoya, B+W, Heliopan… UV filters should not introduce any coloring. Different manufacturer lenses can do so.

Any Pentax-mount AF lenses similar to Zeiss planar design?

Planar type lens: symmetric lens design for large aperture with normal to slight tele angle of view.
Touit: Shows this symmetric design, but adds two additional lens elements in the rear part to improve performance. During analog days, only Macro-Planars had extra lens elements to improve image quality. For digital you need all quality/resolution power there is.
Modern lenses for digital camera offering high resolution really diverge from Planar design. It is very hard to keep an existing image look.

Pentax FA 43 is similar in design to a Planar - how it draws, you need to find out yourself. The FA 31/77 of the same lens line are not closely related to Planars in my opinion. They look more like wide angle and tele designs - Distagon/Sonnar in Zeiss speak. Pentax took great care to get similar image drawing capabilities from 31/43/77 - as you can see, this capabilities are not related to the Planar design, but to the correction of abberations present in all lens designs.
The FA 31 was designed as a retrofocus wide angle lens for FF coverage - lens rear element further away (approx. 43mm) from the sensor than its focal length (31mm) to clear the mirror box. The Touit does not have this problem since there is no mirror between lens and sensor. Therefore we see a Planar design with the 3+3 symmetric elements in the center.

You may want to check literature on telescopes and not look for literature on viewfinders.
A lens in front, a prism in between, an ocular on the end. Now it is all about eye position, magnification, illumination.... Any change in parameters has an effect on cost, but will also tweak a system towards, i.e. more light, high eyepoint, cheap implementation...

They will be looking for quick wins. Significant improvements without too much effort. If you update the optical formula, the whole lens should be inspected for changes and updates.
The FA Ltds saw "only" an update in coatings, their image drawing capabilities remained almost untouched as well as AF and fringing. The FA35 was also a very minor update - not good examples of improvements. Most developement effort went in real re-designs of D(F)A* 16-50, 11-16, 85, the 21Ltd.

I own the WR version since it came out. Since then we saw a ff line of lenses and a camera appear. Some lenses were redone in the meantime, a couple really new lenses were presented. Pentax pumped out the 100WR recently as cheap add-on for new cameras, there had to come an update. We should all have a 100WR - the new lens must be really good.
The lens also need silent af and a focus limiter, a focus clamp would also be nice.

The K3iii is great, matches, surpasses the D500 in many aspects. In the end, the D500 can be put behind some glass not at all available from Pentax. If the 150-450 is fine for you, Pentax does very very well.
For me the K3iii with 150-450 works, on D500 I would pick faster glass or PF lenses

What do you find in Nikon that you do not find in a Pentax. This will help answering your question. D700 is a solid camera with ff sensor.

Did you include the manual with the purchase? Half an hour is not enought to rtfm!
Lot´s of freaks out there that cannot live with 2 day response time or 2s display time..., but wanting a cheap price on a like new camera.

My pin hole camera takes for ever to draw an image. Displaying the image never worked.

SR ("IBIS") and ILIS - be aware of their potential impacts and how-to check yourself

Interesting appraoch to detect shaking.
The real difference between IBIS and ILIS is that companys had to decide at one point for one or the other. IBIS is easier to implement today without changing all you lens designs. ILIS was the only way to go during film days.
Today I actually want both from a camera manufacturer, especially for optical viewfinders. ILIS for long tele glass to keep the AF system on the spot, and IBIS because I do not expect every lens to get an ILIS inside. Combine both for total happiness.

Instead of bashing Leica for … whatever plus price tag, you better get one and play with it to understand the feeling. M2 was released approximately 30 years before the Bessa - do you realize what you try to compare here? The cameras are quite OK, the glass is awesome. Read about Leica history and the original Leicas, most of the new lines are made in cooperation with Panasonic. An M Leica is still an M Leica.

I understand quite well why Pentax does not re-issue the lens as FF and why they promote the 70-210. It is also obvious why the 70-210 cannot carry the * designation.

Nikon N4004 (extended thread)

N4004 was the entry level AF Nikon. N2020 was really the first throw after Minolta showed the first real system. For me N2020 was released earlier, but positioned as mid range camera. Only with N8008 Nikon joined the advanced AF world.
N4004 features were OK, but lacking decent control design and a flash put inside a SLR was really a no go for the serious photographer. FE2 was still around, FM2n was alive and F3 was about to stand next to F4. Happy days that were.

Send the camera with at least one lens for adjustment. Pentax can “zero” the camera and move the correct af position from off the scale to on the scale. With a new camera/lens this service was free for me, without it was rather cheap.
