Order placed! Thanks for sharing.

Sigma 12-24 hasn't been playing nice with my K-1, AF and auto-aperture issues. Shouldn't be a problem with this Irix :)

Thanks for this topic Jim, I've built one for myself too. It is nearly the same focal length of the lens, just a tad wider. Not bad for parallax either, just need to remember to aim higher for a closeup subject. :)

Discovered that my DA* 50-135 + Kenko 1.4x MC4 combination produces amazing flare patterns with faraway point light sources. Check them out, particularly the last two :)

Excellent shots from you too! I wish we had some old steel cruising around like that. :)
I have the regular EX DG variety of the Sigma 12-24, f/4.5-5.6. No HSM.

Here's a few more I did today with it:

The Fish-eye Takumar 18mm f/11 doesn't get any love. I'm trying my best to work with it's "peculiar" qualities. If you treat it like a 1963 Fisheye Lensbaby, then you'll have some fun with it.

F/11 is awfully unsharp, but if you place your subject carefully it can really pop.

Since it is a focus free optic, it's very nice for quick street shots. The hyperfocal distance is 26cm. This shot was defished and cropped, shot at f/22 probably.

I think these flowers have have even been a little closer than 26cm, but shooting at f/32 brought them into the focus plane.

Was being kinda lazy and just set the camera for Av mode so I didn't have to meter things manually. Downside is that the shutter speed sticks to 1/100s.

Another dreamy rendition, f/22 IIRC

Is the tree really blurry, or is it just really windy? ;)

Obligatory camera fashion shoot, this K-1 is sporting a svelte optic from the Takumar collection.

On the subject of long exposures...

3 minutes each with D-FA 24-70:

And a bonus shot courtesy of the shaved DA 10-17. Shot at 10mm as a circular fisheye image, defished (still lots of fish) by LR profile, then cropped.

This one is for the birds, first two from D-FA 24-70:

Gooseland

Then a few more from Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO Tele-Macro. A lens I actively try to dislike enough to justify a D-FA 150-450, but the images out of it never agree with that line of thought.

After 10 long weeks Ricoh/Sun Camera have finally managed to return my camera with a functioning mode dial!

In celebration I picked up a shiny new HD D-FA 24-70 f/2.8 WR, no more slumming it up with Sigma 24-60. ;)

Today I strapped together an apparatus that included a tripod, ball head, macro rail, and zip-ties to hold my dremel in the correct position. Then I dressed up my 10-17 in a bunch of masking tape and did the deed...

BEWARE! NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! SOMEONE TOOK A DREMEL TOOL TO THEIR LENS. PURE INSANITY!!!

I bought it on impulse and haven't found any reason to regret it yet. Absolutely worth the money, especially when you look at the cost of the first-party Nikon or Canon 24-70mm f/2.8s.

(Sigh)

Not if I'm not changing the aperture between every shot. Take a portrait in full sun at f/1.4, a cloud comes or I move my subject to another spot with different lighting, take another shot. I haven't touched my aperture dial, or any other setting.

I don't use Av mode with a set ISO because I "don't trust the camera", I use it in this way as the most expedient method of achieving a result, as I explained in the previous post.

Nope, the camera will first raise ISO too high instead of bumping flash power, so I'll still have to tweak shutter speed constantly to keep ISO low. I want the shutter speed to move, not the ISO. I use TAv mode for flashless shooting of wildlife, so I have my auto-ISO set 100-51200, which may differ from your setting.

So perhaps in this situation one could go to manual mode, but if it is so dark I've probably already ditched the idea of shooting HSS and busted out a tripod anyways. If I'm going to use flash for a sub-handheld exposure then we're talking about a completely different situation then what I'm describing. The meter warns you of this by flashing the shutter speed, that is your cue to change tact.

I was comparing Av to M. Av is far more automated than M, I'm sure you would agree.

I would listen to Ricoh since they made the camera and have real authority on these matters. You and I do not.
I have listened to you first cry (paraphrasing) "USER ERROR. The manual doesn't say anything about Av mode." and then not concede an ounce of sympathy to the concerns of other Pentax shooters. Ricoh should concern themselves with this issue because it could negatively impact parts of their userbase who have become accustomed to this functionality . Whether you agree it is a viable way of shooting or not is irrelevant.

Sorry, I mentioned it more clearly in another thread but not here. An A lens will not drop slower than 1/180, but modern ones will. This is because the modern lens will report it's focal length, inputted focal length for the SR system with an A lens has no effect on the proceedings. However you may notice on your K-30 that the shutter-speed will range from 1/180s up to 1/6000s, using all the EV steps in between, assuming it works similarly to K-5/K-5II.

As a regular photographer and not necessarily a PFforums armchair expert: If you were personally using this "undocumented-feature" on your K-30 for years, then the K-1 inexplicably dropped it, would you not be concerned? Would you not contact Ricoh to find out what happened?
The manual can never 100% describe every detail about the camera. It merely describes how to use it "for optimum camera performance" by whatever definition Pentax uses. Such a statement does not eliminate or automatically render invalid other possibilities.

---------- Post added 06-15-2016 at 06:46 PM ----------

Could be, but then why would the shutter-speed toggle between 1/200 and 1/8000? It does this at the drop of a pin, for example moving ISO from 1000 to 1250, a 1/3 EV increase in exposure and the shutter speed decreases by 5.3EV. This is why I believe the metering system is to blame specifically, so much for "enhanced electronics". :) Sure an A lens doesn't provide much info, but it provides the same info now as it did to a K-5.

I'd be happy if Ricoh fixed this, OR, broke it completely. Right now it's half-broken and it can result in all manner of poor exposures.

Got the sensor stain on my launch K-5 too, I could have been more cautious this time, but I like to be on the bleeding edge. :)

Sent off my K-1 so the K-5 is temporarily out of retirement, and I'm missing my GPS, flippy-screen, and good AF. The coming weeks will be painful.

You're really condescending.

By changing the aperture I also control DOF, besides the quantities of light.
Imagine yourself in a situation please, you want to shoot your fast lens wide open outdoors in the harsh sun with a little fill flash, you also want top IQ so you want base ISO. Sometimes you might want to stop down a smaller aperture depending on the shot. We're looking to shoot in the fastest way possible.
In this scenario, we're looking to keep both f-stop and ISO constant. So you really have two choices, Manual or Aperture Priority modes.

Av mode with HSS enabled will keep the shutter speed above an appropriate level (>1:1 w/ focal length) when the ambient light dips forcing the flash to a slow-synchro, or go all the way to 1/8000s if the ambient light dictates. The flash is always giving an appropriate amount of fill for whatever aperture you want, while exposing perfectly for ambient too. All you need to concern yourself with is composition, focus, and Av value, unless there is an aspect of the shot where you desire a certain shutter speed too.

Manual mode does none of that, I always have to watch the exposure meter and tweak shutter speed accordingly. While as a photographer I know when it is HSS or Slow-Synchro, the flash is actually perfectly capable of making that distinction too. Moving the shutter speed around in M doesn't take much time, but it is more work than Av.

You'll find most photographers can appreciate an automated system when it works well, M is not the only choice on the dial for good reason: it's what the market wants.

------------------------------------------

Regarding the A lens, why does the system work on K-5/K-5II without subject distance, but not K-1? Can subject distance not be estimated from focus confirm?

Open your mind a little. There is conflicting evidence of how the system works and has worked with an A lens, so Ricoh should investigate it further. Medex expected the camera to work like his previous one, now it doesn't. This is a classic support issue/bug that Ricoh should address.
