Alternative to Photoshop and Lightroom ?

I realize that Photoshop and Lightroom are becoming the industry standards for post processing of digital photos. However, I do not like the direction Adobe is moving toward cloud based software, and renting the programs monthly. I am not currently committed to any software package. I would appreciate your advice about alternatives that will run on a regular desktop windows 10 based PC. I am okay with not having the latest and greatest gismo for image modification. I am looking for a capable program that has all the basics, and I can learn to use at my own pace, which is quite intermittent and slow. I have a budget of $200 or less.
P.S.
I don't like spending lots of time on the computer. I much prefer taking pictures with my K-3 and attempting to get things right the first time.

Thanks for you help.

Caution !! I just purchased Lightroom 6 for Windows. The system requirements are quite high. It will not load on my Aspire 1 laptop even though I am running Windows 7 and have 4 GB of memory. I need a serious upgrade to both my laptop and desktop in order to use this software.

Affordable LED Ring Flash / Light for K-3

I know this has probably been covered somewhere else, but I can't find any place on this forum that has more than an occasional mention of the new LED models on the market. I know there are dedicated ring flash units from Pentax and a few others, but these are well beyond my price range. I am just getting started in Macro and don't want to invest allot of money until I know what I am about. I am now using an M 50mm 1.7 on a macro focusing 2x extender or a Tamron 70 - 300 Macro focusing lens with a diopter filter. Please direct me to something less than $100 that will work but won't waste my time or money. If there is information collected somewhere, please point me to it.

Thanks,

Metz - Chapter 11 ?

I have seen text recently that Metz is in chapter 11. Is this true? What is the long term impact for owners of Metz flash equipment? They have been making flash equipment for 75 years. I understand that the financial drag on the company was their TV business. Can the flash equipment survive the reorganization? I also see that Manfrooto ( USA distributor) no longer lists Metz equipment. Just my luck. I just paid $400 for a new Metz flash for my K-3.

Macro A resource for macro magnification for lenses?

For me, the choice of lens and accessories for Macro work depends on a lot of factors. Not the least of these is practical working distance. I have never seen a chart or data that compares the working distance ( lens to subject distance ) at 1:1 magnification. It makes a world of difference depending on what you are attempting to photograph. Live creatures usually require more distance than stationary object. Any ideas where I can find this type of information ? The lens data base would be wonderful.

Wired,
I have not seen the set up instructions for the K-3. Did I miss it somewhere? Sounds like good stuff. Can't wait to start using it.
Thanks,

I am an old timer Pentax user. I have an ME Super, K-x, K-3 and a mix of new and legacy glass. This provides me with a potential for photographic excellence that far surpasses my current abilities. I am very happy that Ricoh is supporting the Pentax brand. I agree that the prices for top of the line Pentax glass and accessories is beyond my reach. I am enjoying experimenting with my tools as I continue to learn. Thanks Ricoh and keep up the good work.

All,
B&H Photo has answered my question about the 90 MM macro model 72-B vs model B-57 -100. They are the same except for minor cosmetic differences. It uses the standard Adaptal 2 mount for Pentax. Now all I need to do is decide on purchasing the new one or wait for a used one to show up at a much lower price.

Old vs. New Tamron 90 mm macro MF

I just saw an add at B&H Photo for a Tamron 90 mm f-2.8 MF macro adaptal lens model B-57 -100. It is new and comes with the typical 6 year warranty. How is this different than the old Tamron Model 72 B? Does it use the Tamron PKA adaptal 2 lens mount?

I have a question for this group. I am looking for information on a Tamron SP 90 mm f 2.8 MF Macro. Model 72 B. I found a picture of it. I would like to purchase one but never see one for sale. It is not listed in the Forum Lens Data Base. Any information would be appreciated.

My experience with KEH Camera

My experience with KEH has been generally good. I did purchase a BGN grade lens and was not happy with it. Unfortunately i did not get it tested before the return period expired. Everything was functional but the IQ of the lens was much less than expected. They would not take it back. Other than this one issue, I have been very pleased with their service and products. I will likely buy from them again. It is safer than from FleeBay and the price is about the same.

Bell & Howell flash issues with my K-3

I would buy a sigma if I could be sure it works on a K-3. I have asked B&H Photo, Sigma and other forum members. So far no confirmation that the EF 610 DG super will work. The Metz units and Pentax are out of my price range.

Thanks for the advice Alex. I am trying to find something for $200 or less. I have read a lot of good things about Metz units, but they are on the high side of my price range. I suspect if I wait for a while, other manufacturers will eventually make units that work well with the K-3. I do have an old Promaster thyrister flash that will do in a pinch until I locate something with true p-ttl capability.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback. I also asked B&H Photo about the compatability of the Sigma AF 610 Super with the K-3. I got a non answer which was quite a disappointing surprise. I am curious about this flash based on very good report in The Definitive Guide - Pentax P-TTL Flash Comparison. Anyone out there with first hand experience with this flash on a K-3??

Thanks again for all your help.

I have experienced similar issues with the same model flash on my K-3. You are not alone. I am now looking for an affordable flash for the K-3. I am going to keep the B&H for use on my K-x where it is fine.

Flash Compatability with Pentax K-3

I would like to know if the Sigma EF-610 DG Super is fully compatible with the P-TTL flash system of the Pentax K-3 ? I know it works well with older model Pentax cameras. I have been burned before, based on manufacturers claims, that proved to be less than accurate, I need some assurance before I purchase another flash.

Thanks,

Stevebrot,
Yes, it is making contact with all the pins of the hot shoe. I just rechecked the B&H on my K-x and it works fine except for the slave mode that fires on the pre flash. Won't self adjust at all on the K-3. It can only function in full manual.

Any one have first hand experience with shoe mounted flash for the K-3? I have a Bell and Howell that works fine on my K-x, but not on the K-3. The Pentax flashes are just too expensive. Your advice will be much appreciated.
