How would you rate this lens?

Thanks!

Carl Zeiss made some fantastic lenses for Sony. The range is small but the lenses are far better than those of Canon and Nikon. The colours the lenses render are very pleasing. These are AF lenses and optically are very good. The only problem with the lenses is the price.

Some of the lenses that have been tested by photozone:

Zeiss ZA Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 SSM (Sony SAL-2470Z) Review / Test
Zeiss ZA Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ( Sony SAL-85F14Z ) - Review / Test Report
Zeiss ZA Sonnar T* 135mm f/1.8 ( Sony SAL-135F18Z) - Review / Test Report

There is nothing to argue about. Canon & Nikon have the best cameras and lenses.
Had I enough cash I would have bought Canon for telephoto shots and Nikon D3x & Nikkor 14-24mm. If I was a wedding photographer I would have S5Pro with Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 AF-S. And I would have Leica M8 with one or a couple of its 50mm lenses to carry around at night. And Rolleiflex or Hasselblad or both if I was shooting landscapes.

It抯 pretty much K200D or anything bellow with one or two zooms assembled in Vietnam for me at the moment. With good chances these lenses would need to be serviced. And a bag of lenses from a flea market which are older than I.

Jeffery do you have any issues with accurate AF on Tamrons? I've read a lot of complaints about Tamrons.

Marc thanks!

I will check out the thread on manual focus lenses.

I抳e found some excellent deals on K200D on eBay. I think I am going to buy this camera.

P.S. being near sided it抯 going to be difficult to focus those lenses in low light while looking through smaller DSLR viewfinders.

I am wondering from where Prodigital2000 is ordering Pentax camera & lenses?

The gear is brand new and not refurbished?

Jeffrey, thanks for your reply.

A quick question: what is the difference between K100D and K100D Super?
I could not find any differences in specifications provided by dpreview.com.

I will read about two telephoto lenses.

What do you think of Tamron 17-50mm? It looks like a good lens

What camera should I choose between k100d , k100d super & and k10d?
And which short telephoto lens?

Thanks!

Thanks for your suggestions.

What are M lenses?
28mm is not wide enough on a DSLR.

I don't want to buy kit lenses nor super zooms from third parties.

K200D nice to have but I think I may buy used K100D and better quality lenses instead.

Thanks for your reply. Had I enough cash I would have looked at high end cameras. With $700 to spend on a used camera & two lenses - I'd take the best outfit available.

I was thinking of *ist DS2 or K100D Super with Tamron 17-50mm and a prime at 85mm or Tamron 28-75mm and a prime at wide angle.

Something like that. There may be other options too.

Looking for used gear: a camera and a couple of lenses. Either fixed focal length lenses or zooms. Covering wide and standard (short telephoto) range.

Budget $700

What would you recommend?

Thanks!

85mm glass...why so expensive? (Not work-safe)

B&H Photos sells:

85mm f/1.2L II USM from Canon for $1830.
Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 AF-D IF - $1025
CZ for Sony/Minolta 85mm f/1.4 with Auto Focus - $1300
Plannar 85mm f/1.4 Manual Focus for Pentax & Nikon - $1033

Why are these lenses expensive? I think there抯 a large demand for quality portrait lenses and the companies know this.

I know the 85mm f/1.8 AF-D is not very expensive and it's a very good portrait lens. It is priced at around $400. If you can get it to work on Pentax getting good results but it may be easier to buy a used D70S or D50 which are not expensive.

There's Nikon SP rangefinder model. Everybody, especially old timers, loves the camera so much so that Nikon decided to manufacture 2500 units of limited editions of this model a couple of years ago. I've seen ads asking for the camera between $5Kto $8K each. It's a lovely unit but outdated even by film camera standards.
Nikon Rangefinder SP Black 2005

The point here is if you buy something which is old & "limited" you are probably paying extra because it is more of a souvenir.

If you want a good lens with high price/performance ratio then the DA 40mm

Sigma VS Tamron 70-200mm, f2,8

I don’t know if it’s true or not but again according to numerous comments Pentax 12-24mm f/4 and Tokina 12-24mm f/4 optically is the same lens.

In mid range many people are using Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8. And then you have numerous good quality telephoto lenses from Sigma: 100-300mm f/4 , 120-300mm f/2.8, 150mm f/2.8 & 300mm f/2.8

sensor cleaning

If any dust particles adhered to the sensor and you can't remove them, you can take your camera to Pentax support or wherever to wet clean the sensor. Make sure those people know what they are doing & give you some warranty on their work.

You can also buy solutions & swabs specifically prepared for sensor wet cleaning: Photographic Solutions, Inc. - Digital & Photographic Cleaning Solutions

I would not touch the sensor if you have an expensive camera. Otherwise, it’s not too difficult to clean it. I wet cleaned sensor in my old D70 a couple of times with no problems. For new cameras choose Eclipse 2 solution designated as E2 on the web page . Those cameras for which E2 is recommended have a thin layer of Tin Oxide applied over their sensors. Tin Oxide is used as antistatic to repel dust particles. If you use wrong solution you will risk of removing the layer of Tin Oxide leaving muddy stains over sensor.

Thanks for your replies & comments.

I am also looking at Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 disgned by Cosina. It is available for Nikon & Pentax mounts. The lens is not very expensive but it does not come with Auto Focus. It renders interesting colours and smooth bokeh.

I could not find many samples of portraits captured on this lens despite its focal length is ideal for portraits on cameras with APC-S sensors.

Here is a couple from flickr:

Lovely image. :)

I looked at some pictures captured on the DA 70mm f/2.4. I liked gentle bokeh & texture this lens renders.

I am going to look at more images and think about other options before I commit to buy a portrait lens.

Pentax 16-50mm f/2.8 v Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8

Tamron lens is popular & affordable. Many people are using it on their Canon, Nikon & Pentax cameras. According to Tamron's offical website, its optical formula is based on that of its 28-75mm f/2.8.

Pentax's lens is a little more expensive & has some QC issues.
I am more inclined to buy & spend more the Pentax's lens.

Could you please comment on these two lenses?

Thanks!
