I agree I have a good tripod but it does not have a hook to weight if it is windy. I used a gift card from my wife and ended up buying a Sigma 24 mm F 1.8 DG with the Macro capability . Tried it out yesterday and it worked well, as the reviewers indicated it does have nice brokah and handled distances well. Took a moon shot on the water after dark and it handled it well. So now I have some choices. Thanks everyone for the suggestions

Having lived in New England all my life, cold doesn't bother me and I do go out shooting in the cold quite a bit. I am worried about jumping in and out of the heated car (containing my wife) so will being a lock bag to put the camera in when still outside. I have two remotes for the camera but no cable but that should be okay. Last year we went north to Quebec City during the winter

We are going to the West Iceland staying in Stykkisholmur for 2 nights, then down to area near Fludir (Geysers region) and then south Iceland to Krkjubaejarklauster and Skogar. Looking forward to getting to Jokulsarlon where the galcier and ice fragments are often on the black sands.

Because I saved my old Pentax lens I don't have any fast lens. I am going to Iceland (West and South) the first week of March for 8 days and will rent at least one lens for the trip.
This is what I have on hand:

Pentax K5

1. SMC Pentax DA 18-250 1: 3.5-6.3
2. SMC Pentax DA 12-24 1:4 wide angle
3. SMC Pentax FA 80-320 1:4.5-5.6 slow focus
4. Tokina 400 1:5.6 telephoto (still sharp but heavy
5. SMC Pentax M 100 1:4 macro
6. SMC Pentax M 40 1:2.8 Prime
7. SMC Pentax M- 28 1:2.8 Prime
8. SMC Pentax M 20 1:4 Prime
9. SMC Pentax M- 50 1:4 macro

I'm thinking of bring lens # 1, 2, 7, and maybe 3.

What additional single lens would you rent to bring in particular to photograph the auroa borealis at night?. We will have a car and I have a good camera bag (or even two and decent tripod so overall weight not much of an issue.

I just came back from a photo workshop last week in Mass. Everybody eles in the whole group of 20 used either n or C. The instructor asked me about the camera because his daughter just bought one and he did not know very much about it. He pushes using all manual controls in the workshops. I let him use it a few time and he was impressed with the use with the little things like an automatic mirror up and shutting off the vibration control when using the remote. Outside of some of my old manual lens (from my Pentax 100 days) he was impressed.

I have a wedding to go to in Naples fl in late april. I am taking a few extra days. Since I am from NE and have never been in the Naples FL region would like to get some ides of where to go in or around Naples (around dawn since my wife will still be alseep). In addition on at least one of the days I would like to drive to the western part of the everglades to get some easy to find spots. I like shots of beaches, rustic landscapes, birds,: the usual hodgepodge of shots in the countrysides without people.

I received the Pentax Flash AF 540 fgz for the holidays and happy learning how it works. I have got it to work in slave mode but not happy with the 2 flashes. a couple of questions to help me learn:

Are there any good learning books on this flash and other off camera. The manual with flash is confusing.

I would like to do some night photography and fill flash photography and want to have some wireless connections that are not reliant on line of site. what good accessories should I look for for a radio or wireless hot shoe to control this flash?

I have some older light weight camera tripods I cannot find in B&H any accessories to hold the flash on a tripod. What am I missing

Thanks

I would try to get in closer and get the electric lines out of the picture. Your really don't need the sky and the upper story of the building. good colors on the brick int he 2nd picture.

I like a lot of B&W and will often push the limit to see how it plays. the first is a hot air balloon at sunset. Lots of color in the sky and in the balloons, but when I pushed in PSE the blue filter and then made B&W I got an interesting photo:

In others you want to to get texture or contrast:

Even landscapes are fun in B&W

I do also put a lot of weight on the WR and do use the camera in wet weather and near the ocean. I even wade out into surf with it, but I don't expect it to survive a dunking especially if turned on.

Here is a picture using the K5 on a tripod in light surf.

I am also in the opinion in this case of being a bit overdone. I like the B&W best of this series.

Good explanation on the choice of lens. Since I have not yet order the lens might just relook again. PSRI is the photographic society of RI. We meet 3 tuesdays a month and a pretty good group with lots of new information.

I am finally getting the Pentax Zoom Super Wide Angle SMCP-DA 12-24mm f/4 ED AL (IF) lens but worried about what 77 mm filters will fit without limitiations or vignetting. I take a lot of seascapes and waterfalls so want a neutral density and polarizer in the mix. Any recommendations? I understand in reading the reviews a thin filter may be better.

I have never had a wide angle this low. (18 is my lowest with a 20 old prime) so looking forward to having fun with this.

Thanks you for the answers. this has helped me in understanding the concept of the high ISO better and how it might affect the use of the slower lens (longer exposure for the same amount of light as a faster lens).

Understanding implications high iso

I need some help in understanding the concept of the high iso. I have had Pentax cameras since the film days, and so have a lot of old and slow lens. I used to never shoot above 400 iso film speed, even with my K10 I rarely let it go above 400. With the higher iso and slower lens i should be able to keep my shutter speed down and still get good DOF; correct?

I think I have read that the k5 is usable with all the old k mounts without any adapters? I don't mind shooting in manual with manual focus.
