Tamron 17-70 vs Pentax 12-24

From what I remember of my DA 12-24mm f4, it performed much better at the wider end (12-16mm)
than in the 20-24mm range where it just wasn't as sharp.

The Tamron 17-50mm is a sharp lens, if you can find a good copy and, if the internals don't loosen up over time.

When did your LBA abate ?

My LBA had been doing fine for the past few years until this summer when a few great opportunities popped-up,
figured now was a great chance to get a few compatible zooms in the event I ever got a Full-Frame Pentax DSLR:

Sigma 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 DG
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG
Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO Macro

Luckily all at great prices versus some of my past LBA impulsive purchases...

the one here next to me has a SMC Pentax-F 28mm 2.8

K5 low temp performance

My current K-x starts to act up at about -20°C,
the other night at -27°C I could only get 1-2 actuations
until it 'froze' and the rear LCD displayed a bunch of weird lines.
A quick on/off and it would always repeat the same behaviour.

An older K-x I sometimes use a spare (broken flash mount)
seems less affected by the extreme cold.
Lube on the mirror mechanism variations?

Despite being discontinued for a while now the K-x is still a great performer especialy at high ISO, (I've got two!)
but keep in mind it needs a good set of NiMH rechargeable AA batteries to function.

Brands like Eneloops, Ansmann, Powerex (if possible all of 2600 MaH. or better capacity)
often perform longer than easier to find common Wal-Mart Energizers/Duracells NiMh's.

Sigma 17-50mm EX f2.8 or Sigma 24-70mm EX f2.8

Both my Tamron 17-50mm were actually decent / very good when I first got them,
problems arose after a few days/weeks/months of using them almost everyday
in some moderate/rough environments.
Loose/worn internals?, ff-bf focus/sharpness became inconsistent thru the range etc.

My Sigma 18-50mm (see sig) is still going strong after 2.5 years in the same conditions.
Sent in for minor calibration once while I had one of the Tamron's as a back-up
and still shows no sign of wear after all this time in rough service.

In this case what did the extra $ get me:

much better pics = no
better build quality and performance consistency over time = yes

As mentionned, it's too bad because I think the optics of the Tamron lens
are very good, it's just the mechanical package surrounding it seems cheaply done.

Sigma 17-50mm EX f2.8 or Sigma 24-70mm EX f2.8

I had a Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 (pre-HSM version) for a while,

after getting used to having a 18-50mm as a walk-around lens,
I quickly realised that 24mm was just not wide enough for me.

I also tried a couple of Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 over the last few years,
front/back focus issues in both, zoom ring failure in one and overall
lower build quality/fit/handling than what I was used too.

Gave up on that model lens,
too bad because it seems like very good optics but not packaged properly,
it's too 'hit or miss' hoping to get a good copy I find.

English not being my first language, I also had a bit of difficulty getting the DEBUG_MODE going in my K-x from online instructions, perhaps this can help you too:

Some online instructions mention that for the K-7 the DELETE button must be held while powering up and and not MENU.
On my K-x, the top AV+/- button has to be held.
Also, latest Firmware versions might not allow acces to the DEBUG_MODE in certain camera models.

I've had that zoom ring problem too,
first the markings were not in line with the actual lens setting,
after a while the zoom ring became 'disconnected' from the internal mechanism and required warranty repair.

I finally got rid of this lens because of annoying front/back focus issues. Using the 'debug mode' trick
in my K-x I could tune only one end of the focal range, to be 'perfect' at 17mm it was than then front focus at 50mm.

Sold it and kept using my Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro,
better build quality lens and just as sharp as the Tamron when stopped down to f3.5-4

This is my everyday lens: sharp, consistent focus thru range, good build quality.

For a while had both a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and this one and
did plenty of side-by-side comparing.

Sold the Tamron, kept the Sigma. Great lens

Can Sensor's move?

After a year or so in service my K-x developed an internal 'tilt'

as described in 1st post, despite holding the camera level thru viewfinder,
the recorded images were all 1°-2° degrees tilted to the right.

Warranty repair thru Pentax Canada, loose sensor or something.

Lately I think it's starting to do it again, not as severe maybe 0.5-1° degrees,
but after 2 years of hard use/being banged around I'm not going to spend to get it fixed out of warranty.

I've used both of these zooms:

-Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG MACRO (older version, non-HSM)

-Sigma 20-40mm f2.8 EX DG (harder to find)

both have a HUGE 82mm front element and are very prone to flare.

Do you still use your kit lens?

Never used it at all,

unfortunatly a body only option wasn't available when I got my K-x and I needed
a constant f2.8 zoom in the same range so I was stuck with an unused kit lens for a while.

Included the DAL 18-55mm as a 'free bonus' with lens sale/trade a year later.

My K-x initialy required a big adjustment too, around +130.
But after a year or so in use, the recorded images started to be tilted 1-2 degrees
so I suspected a loose sensor mounting / SR mechanism / ?? problem.

Once back from warranty repair by Pentax Canada,
it required much less to fine tune the front/back focus,
around +30 or so.

Check if your horizon isn't level too,
set the camera on a level table, notice if playback image
isn't level with the one taken thru the viewfinder.

I've asked for help on this subject before:

I'm running Firmware version 1.01 in my K-x,
perhaps there's an issue with newer versions.
I've read somewhere that it might not work with v.1.03.

My memory card door is closed while I access the mode.

Poll: Staying with Pentax or jumping ship?

-quality control
-autofocus accuracy in artificial light
-competitive pricing

K-01 / larger mirrorless camera with an EVF as a K-r replacement would be nice,
I don't care if a full-frame Pentax DSLR is ever offered.

Issue that also makes me reconsider next camera purchase:

-3rd party lens manufacturers not offering K-mount options:
Tokina 11-16mm, Tamron 17-50mm VC, 18-270mm etc.
