What does the "P", "A" and "AS" switch on the power-zoom lens stand for? BTW some links in this thread are dead.

Sigma 8-16 problem

My K-30 works just great will all other Pentax glas I have. The described strange behaviour occurs just with the Sigma 8-16 lens in combination with one (of the two) original Li-Ion batteries. I dont use auto leveling and all in-camera corrections are off. I only use visual level check in the viewfinder which comes very handy with ultra wide angles.

I may return the camera but probably Pentax service will find out that the Sigma lens is the cause. I may return the lens and get a replacement to find out that the semi-freeze problem may be gone but the lens may have some other (optical) flaw. Your mileage may vary.

When the problem does occur I can still take pictures and instantly notice its there. I can adopt to the flaw simply by using the lens in MF. Or I could use the other Li_Ion battery which seems to do well. Or I might use Eneloops since they dont give me any reason to complain. Or finally, I could attach 8-16 to any of my other two cameras which are immune to this strange phenomenon.

Sigma 8-16 problem

Maybe my description of what's happening was not detailed enough: so called "semi-freeze" makes the camera limited in respone: it still does AF, measures and releases. But it does NOT react to control wheels and/or any other button than the shutter release button. The pictures are saved to the card alright but they get the lens shade vignetting (see samples above).

The most obvious explanation to me is that the sensor gets locked in the upper right corner of its magnetic travel. The lens works flawless with my other two Pentax cameras.

Digitalis, how do you explain that the lens is working good with the other two cameras, K-20 & K-r? I figure this problem is K-30 specific and depends on certain battery voltage.

I've done further examination and could reduce my K-30 problem down to a single Li-Ion battery. I have two original and 4 no name equivalents, the one that causes trouble is one of the Pentax originals. The marked battery works well with all my other genuine Pentax lenses except with the Sigma 8-16. Curiously the same battery works on K-r with the 8-16. Go figure. I suppose it has something to do with battery voltage and/or K-30 sensitivity to voltage levels.

I have been able to track this problem down: it only appears on K-30 with Li-Ion but not when running on Eneloop-power. Interestingly it does not appear on K-r with the same power source and it is totally absent on the K-20 though.

Camera & lens contacts are clean, both are nearly new. The "semi-freeze" phenomenon comes at various zoom seeting, so I suppose it has nothing to do with that. Focal lengths under 10mm are simply not recorded in the EXIF for this lens, but I can live with it.

I suspect the freezing has something to do with AF-operation, in particular with the way how camera/lens communicate. When I use MF with this Sigma lens the freezing is absent. No other lens (all Pentax) gives me any problems.

Sigma 8-16 problem

After a couple of shots K-30 "semi-freezes", it still measures and releases, but it does not answer to wheels/parameter change. The pictures during that "semi-freeze" have a spherical vignetting border at the frame top (I will post samples here later). Also the images are not properly tagged for orientation when reviewed.

Only way to restore normal operation is through off/on, yet after 10-15 shots the problem returns. I have tried different SD-cards and power sources and I believe the reason is the Sigma 8-16 lens. This is my only SDM-lens and the only one that causes trouble. Does anyone have similar experiences?

ouch screen.. even the latest 70D breed still uses the 8-way controller.. what for? to choose the AF-points while you look through the prism! the other problem with that super-retro-mockery is that Pentax would need a major UI-redesign first to make it touch operable.. although I admit it would be a nice gadget, a super-retro-dSLR, maybe even fullframe?

Definitely a mockery, but nice try. Just. One essential thing is missing though - no 4-way controller there! How do you change settings and navigate menus? Top layout with two dials on the right and top LCD on the left is a departure from super-retro. Back side speaks FujiFilm digital cameras, but they at least have that navigation array.

After resetting to factory defaults set the mode dial to Auto (green). This should sort your problem out. If it doesn't you might read the manual one last time before you give the camera back.

When you're done with that check the Cross-Processing (Custom-Image). You may start with the Random preset first to get the flavour of it. Later you may use fixed presets for the result you desire. If you particulary like what you see you may also save your own favourite Cross-Processing presets directly out of the Play-Mode. This is real fun! :)

Your brains have to be online with the camera AF-mode, I mean you ought to "tell" the camera what you're after, what's your point of interest. If you point it to the plain sky it might be tough, except there is some cloud or BIF which it can have a lock on.

I'd suggest DA18-55WR if you're on tight budget. It's the most affordable WR combo so far and the lens is known to be a solid performer.

I don't know about the Nikons though, but as Pentax is concerned you can do HSS with any camera. It is a functionality provided by the flash, not by camera.

I guess it is possible to get spare parts from Pentax if you are their authorized service. As end user you can get end user products like adaptors, cables etc.

I would send it in for repair.

This way OP might get the right exposure, but not the expected result. He would like to use f1,7.

My only gripe with the K-x is the missing indication of the active AF points in the viewfinder. If you don't set your focus point manually you actually don't know where the camera focuses. The Auto-5 (focus points) comes very good for panning and action shots though.

Get two sets of new Eneloops and you will have smooth operation.

Pop-up flash with M-lens?

I don't have a K-5 but I assume the pop-up flash works the same across different Pentax dSLR cameras. This means P-TTL with A-lens and newer, but with M-lens no P-TTL. I know that with M-lens the flash always fires full power.

The OP expected some sorts of control over the flash power while he wants to leave the aperture of his M-lens fully open. He has no manual control option over the pop-up flash. Pop-up flash will always fire full power with M-lens, as we know.

Under manually controlled flash I understand a strobe that has zero automation & no communication with the camera (except sync) yet it has some sort of power control. If it has only one power setting then there is no manual control.

Pop-up flash with M-lens?

It seems you do not understand the core of the problem, you're asking for something impossible.
With a M lens the camera does not know about the aperture set. Aperture is essential for flash exposure.
The internal flash is a P-TTL flash only. (You can make a flash exposure correction for the given exposure though.)
