Universal L-brackets

That is where we will have to disagree. As I mentioned, I have an RRS L-bracket and I simply did not like the feel of it permanently mounted to my camera despite the utility of having an instant portrait mount for my tripods. And when I added the battery grip, the RRS L-bracket really became a hindrance since it is “too dedicated” to work with the grip. Anyway, I replaced it with the universal L-plate which is just as sturdy as the RRS bracket - and no it doesn't shift or twist on the camera. It may not look as sexy but I care a lot more about functionality than looks. And for me it functions so much better in that it does everything the dedicated bracket did plus it works with any of my cameras and it is only on my cameras when I need it to be – 5 seconds on – 5 seconds off. Anyway, your mileage does vary from mine – I’ll stick with my way. ;)

Interesting idea! I haven't thought of that material. I've tried bicycle tubing, self-clinging packing wrap/tape and various elastiic cords with varying degrees of success. This type of problem/solution pretty much became moot for me when I bought the heavy-duty carbon tripod for my long lenses. :D But it is still a handy trick on a windy day with my other tripods. :)

Yes, any Kirk item on eBay available through eBay user 'kirkphoto333' is Jeffery Kirk of Kirk Enterprises. Sone nice deals too! I've bought at least a half-dosen of their quick release mounts & plates and have been tempted by the ball-head you just bought. Looking forward to your review!

As far as I know, they are legit... But, according to the Markins website FAQ, eBay ball-heads are not under warrantee through Markins. So probably gray-market...

Yes, she is everything you said and more. :D And the working distance! I'm in heaven!

I'm 6'4" and yes the floor to base-plate height is 60" for the 5541. Add in the 2" height of an Arcatech leveling head (came in yesterday) and the 8.5" for the Wimberley arm's pivot point, it puts the viewfinder at eyelevel with me standing flat footed and the head leveled. I'll probably drop the legs an inch or two if I have the leveling head in the system. I bought the Gitzo legs for less than $900 USD (can't remember the NYC shop), the Wimberley from B&H and the Arcatech direct. All in all, it fits me pretty well and I don't regret not getting the 5561.

Edit: Just looked at the 5561 - 8.5 feet??? I didn't realize they had such a gap between the two.

Just got the brace and I have to say that I like it! It give me a very firm feel when using the macro that I didn't have before with the bare monopod. I'm going to try it out with the 300mm tomorrow to see how I like it with a tele. Thanks again for the info Blue!

Here you go guys! Note that the bungee can't be too tight or it will pull the legs together. I use one (or more) of those Velcro computer straps to adjust the tension on the bungee so that it is not too tight. The main idea here is to dampen vibration or other resonances in the legs from wind, traffic, large herds of big footed tourists, etc. A plus is that it will fix the dead weight (gear bag) in place and the bag will dampen bungee cord vibrations. Yes, they can vibrate too. Iíll use this setup with spiked feet if the surface Iím on is suitable - small sand bags if not.

By the way Marc, the last photo in particular is for you. Thanks again for driving my LBA! :D

Actually, I do. I’ve tried a couple of the inexpensive vinyl leatherette grips and they itch and irritate my skin. Not everyone can deal with vinyl. Plus the stuff tends to crack and scratch over time. As to smell of leather, simple care and cleaning solves that problem. Otherwise my truck seats would kill a horse after 9 years of use. Periodic cleaning is necessary anyway. After all, hand sweat and goo also sticks to the camera. As to price – for me – irrelevant that they are so cheap. You get what you pay for. By the way, I don’t have the Camdapter strap - only the plate. I use the USA Pentax WebStore version of the strap which I like a lot and for me is worth the $30 USD. Anyway, thanks for your opinion – I’ve tried your style of straps – doesn’t work for me. Glad it does for you.

But that is the point. "Dedicated" in this case may not be desireable. I have the RRS L-plate and it sits in a box in storage because it is too dedicated. :)

I really like the handgrip setup. The older I get, the more problems I have with my neck so anything I can get off it makes me happier. :)

I wrap it horizontally around the middle or upper joints of all three legs of the tripod in question. I'll try and post a photo tomorrow.

That tripod was bought specifically for my F*600 f4 pictured here. It is capable of holding the considerable weight comfortably with some (believable) margin. A tripod like this is probably overkill for a much lighter setup. By the way, as a rule I like a factor of 2 or more in weight handling versus actual weight load. Also, I generally don't believe the manufacturers' specs. :hmm: I think they are generally "optimistic". ;)

The larger diameter is one factor. Both the Bogen & Giottos being constructed of aluminum is another factor. I placed them on a tile floor for my test because carpet dampened the vibration to a great degree. I could barely detect any vibration on the carpet. By the way I have a QuickSet at work with nearly 3" diameter legs that I can still see vibration even in lab conditions. Note that one of the lenses I use has approximately a 1/10th of a degree FOV (with our focal plane) so I can see lens motion caused by traffic vibration. It can be quite challenging to do measurements. :)

Sure - if I don't compensate for their limitations. There are a number of things I do to dampen vibration depending upon the conditions in which I'm shooting. Weight, bungee cords, extra bracing, careful selection of location, wind shielding and floor surface, my own body, etc. - lots of things. And obviously the better tripod helps a lot. The Gitzo is primarily for my long lenses whereas the Bogen & Giottos are generally good for most everything else though I am still tweaking my macro setup.

I saw that as well. I like the looks of it - price-wise it wouldn't be much more than what I've done with the Kirk hardware. I like Arcatech as well - I have their leveling head and it is very solid and smooth.

Just checked my Bogen 3021 (older manfrotto 055), Giottos MT 9371 and Gitzo GT5541LS. They all vibrate to some degree though the Gitzo is so minimal I had not noticed untill I was looking for it. By the way, a rubber bungee wrapped around the legs will pretty much eliminate that type of vibration.

Yes it does. Sliding the QR plate in the QR mount allows me to fully access all connections. I used the Kirk L-bracket, a Kirk K20D camera plate and one of the older Kirk 1.75" QR mounts I got off of eBay. By the way, I've bought several of the Kirk QR mounts so that I can assemble various pieces together quickly - such as my micro-rails, telephoto brace, monopod, etc. At $39 USD they are a real bargain. :)

I use a Camdapter Standard Arca Neoprene adapter. I selected it because it works well with a hand-strap style grip. It is standard Arca and works with my RRS, Kirk and Wimberley QR mounts. Here are some pics with it installed.
