da 15 ltd soft corners ??

How is the DA 21?
I know they are two very different lenses, but both can be used for landscapes. According to Photozone it seems like DA 21 improves faster in the corners as you stop down.

Good tip about the 32 vs 64 bit OS.
Unfortunately the models I mentioned do not have USB3, but they do have E-SATA.

The SSD's are expensive but I don't need 250GB. Win7 occupies only 10-15GB of space and all my photo editing software occupy 4GB. So, this means that a 60GB SSD, which costs approx $120 USD, will be more than enough. I will have plenty of space for recent photos and when finished pp'ing I just move them to a 1TB external HDD.

I am going to be a bit more specific. The models are:
1. Lenovo L412, i3 370M, 4GB RAM, Intel GMA, 14" display
2. Lenovo L412, i5 560M, 4GB RAM, Intel GMA, 14" display
3. Asus B43, i3 370M, 4GB RAM Intel GMA, 14" display
4. Asus B53, i3,370M 4GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon 5470, 15" display.

All of these models will work fine with my Eizo 23" monitor (if needed).
It seems like option 2 or 4 are most powerful. I wonder if the dedicated GPU in option 4 will compensate for the i5 CPU in option 2.
A friend told me.....save money and get the i3, then swap the HDD with a fast SSD.

Because I want to work at different locations and I hate sitting in a separate room at home to pp. I have a desktop that is fast enough, but I don't use it. Sure, I could move the desktop into the living room, but it really doesn't fit in there.

Hello

I edit RAW-files in Lightroom or PPL and then do the remaining post-processing in Paint Shop Pro X.

I don't play games. I surf the net and send emails.

It's time to buy a new notebook and I am not sure how much CPU power I need.
Is Intel i3 + Intel GMA (integrated GPU) enough or do I need an i5 + dedicated GPU? I heard that for photo editing most people will not discover a difference at all between i3 and i5, but that i5 is recommended when editing videos (which I don't).

I know that a notebook is really not a good idea for photo editing, but I am fed up with desktops. If the notebook's LED-display is too bad for serious work I will just connect my Eizo 23" to it.

Edit: One last question: For 1366 x 768 resolution....would you get a notebook with 14" or 15" display?

Kind regards

Choosing between these lenses is very difficult. The good thing is that you won't be disappointed as they are all good.

PPL & Lighroom3 -when judging IQ only.

Guess what, I am still using the old version of PPL (bundled with K10d). It has never crashed and the output is good. I do the rest of PP'ing in Paintshop Pro X + plugins from Topaz and Nik Software.

However, I am interested in "upgrading" to Lightroom 3. I wonder if you could help me with these questions:

1. Is the newer version of PPL improved regarding IQ (compared to the one bundled with K10d) ? I know the interface has been improved somewhat.
2. If you disregard interface/functions and noise reduction......and judge output only, is Lightroom 3 better than PPG?

Kind regards

I considered the K28/2 but it's quite expensive. I am not sure I want to spend more than $300 USD for a K-lens.

Hello Dirk

Thanks for the link. When using the word "better" I was talking about my personal taste, or as you say: "subjective impression". I am tempted to get the K30 just to test it :)

Resolution tests, reviews, pictures ......sometimes it's just impossible to decide which lens to buy. For example, the K30/2.8 is rated higher than the K28/3.5 at this website, but when I compare approx 80 pics in Flickriver the K28/3.5 seems to be the better one.

Flickriver: K28/3.5
Flickriver: K30/2.8

I haven't received it yet, but I will do a quick comparison for you. According to what I have read the K 35/3.5 is supposed to be a little sharper and also more contrasty. But the K 35/2 has better bokeh and most likely more easy to manual focus. I think you can have both....k35/3.5 as an outdoor lens and K35/2 as an indoor lens.

Wow, a K35/2 for $130 USD :eek::lol:

For a long time I have been searching for a low light lens. I love my K28/3.5 and K35/3.5 but sometimes a faster lens (with longer focus throw) is needed. I was lucky a couple of weeks ago.....got the K55/1.8 for a good price. Btw, the K55/1.8 is a wonderful lens, much better than the well regarded M50/1.7. Today I bid $130 for a K35/2 (Swedish auction site) and I never expected to win....but I did

K-r vs. K-x ISO samples (or return of the ISO flower!)

I am not that surprised regarding high ISO performance. However, I remember looking at pics when K-x was released and IMO too many of them seemed to lack detail/sharpness. Judging from the K-r pics I have seen so far they appear much more detailed and sharper.

It's most likely a coincidence or just my imagination, but is it possible that Pentax has tweaked LOW iso performance ?

It is very impressive, but I notice that we're always looking at close-ups. In other words, pics with large uniform areas (the skin). I would like to see a high iso pic with many small edges and details.......for example, a crowd of people.

Anyway, have you made up your mind about K-r vs K-5 when it comes to noise ?

I was puzzled about the low res. lcd-display when the K-x was released. I didn't expect 920k but something like 460k. I mean, 230K is used on budget p&s.

Well, according to what I have seen so far ......ISO 12800 is usable, but NR is necessary.

The most important thing for me is the amount of noise at ISO 3200 and the K-r seems to be be excellent up to ISO 5000!

Thanks for posting.
Hmm....IQ is really excellent up to ISO 3200/4000.
At 6400 it seems like a little NR is needed but that's no problem.
ISO 12800 seems to be usable as well. This is wonderful news.
When comparing with the pics from K-r it seems like the K-r is a little better regarding noise....about 0.5-0.7 stop?

Kind regards

The pictures look great. I have spent some time surfing for K-5 high ISO examples and to me it seems like the K-5 is not better than K-r regarding noise. However, that is expected I guess due to the difference in MP. By the way......it's too early to conclude anything at all :)

Kind regards
