It's official the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 is no longer!

Worried to see the sticker price on a Pentax branded lens, I doubt it will fit into my budget. I'm guessing it will approach $2,400 .... Not at all competitive with the aftermarket lenses just like cannon and Nikor branded lenses. I don't have the budget to buy branded glass and if this is all that is available I will forced to run from Pentax. I love the function and quality in the Pentax Bodies so it won't be an easy choice but like other choices, it may be wallet driven.

Sent a message to Sigma asking about availability of the 70-200 F 2.8. Here is their reply.

"Good afternoon,

It is true that the Pentax version of the 70-200 has been discontinued. Unfortunately, sales of Pentax versions of lenses were low enough that our parent company didnít think it was financially feasible to continue producing them. We are continuing to support the Pentax system as most of our new lenses are being made with a Pentax version.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

Best regards,

Michael Sinnott
Sales Operations Supervisor
Sigma Corp of America"

This is concerning. You must also keep in mind the Tamron is only available in their old model and the new high end glass is also not available in the Pentax K mount nor is the Tamron 150-600 Pentax will need to offer a winder range of lenses themselves or become insignificant no matter what bodies they release. Was looking hard at a K-3 but now I'm going to wait and see what develops.

All great points. And pretty much spot on. I'm just building my equipment and shoot some indoor action as well as wildlife. What concerns me is the secondary lens mfg's noticeably leaving out the Pentax mount and discontinuing the lenses available with it. Like the Tamron 150-600 missing pentax, now the best in class Sigma 70-200 being dropped. This doesn't look good for the future of Pentax. In regards to the OP why invest in a body that is being more and more limited by glass availability everyday? The camera body can be great but it's versatility is controlled by lenses available. Even Sony is blowing Pentax out of the water in this aspect.

Isn't the Sigma now discontinued? Lens availability would be a major consideration in this choice. I'm currently seriously considering a switch away from Pentax for this very reason.

Odd question about K30

Do you notice the shake when you first turn the camera on? If so I don't think it's the lens shake reduction, I think what you are noticing is the sensor cleaning feature. It shakes the lo pass filter when you first turn the camera on to remove dust, you can go into your menu and disable it to see if that is the shake you refer to. It is very noticeable on my K-30.
I use a basic UV filter on my lenses,
Hope this helps.

I see almost all the major retailers have their Black Friday Adds out. People keep saying there will be some great photographic deals on Black Friday but where are they? Will they not be known until Black Friday without any previous advertising? Anyone with previous experience? :)

Here is a youtube review of the K-3 by the Camera store, a great review .... This might need to go on my Christmas list. Been looking at "other brands" but this might be a deal changer. Take a look, grat short review and seems unbiased.

Here is the press release,
Tamron SP150-600mm F/5-6.3 VC USD
It's clear Pentax will be left behind again. Was thinking hard about a New k-3 but might have to take a closer look at the Sony A-7. Love my Pentax but Pentax really doesn't support their cameras well with their lens choices and neither are the secondary makers. Sad.

Thanks for the replies!
I'll be looking for a nice used lens to replace mysig 70-200! This was my favorite lens and it was sad to get this news. With this much damage I doubt it would ever be the same again.:(
So I'm in the market for a nice used 70-200 f/2.8 in the $500 price range. Saving my pennies as I type this.:o

I have a K-30. I shoot indoors at horse shows quite a bit, would be a little slower that sports but definitely action motion shooting in challenging lighting. I typically have to push my ISO into 1600 and at time 3200 because of the light even with the 2.8
Do you feel the Tamron would be weaker in low light like that? To bad Tamron's new lens isn't available in the Pentax mount.
Thanks All!

Got the word from C.R.I.S. today my Sigma OS HSM 70-200 f/2.8 is toast. It fell from my camera on a sidewalk. Send it in for an estimate and the costs is $663 to repair. It looked ok but would not focus.

I'm not sure what happened, I had been using it for a couple hours and the camera and lens were hanging from my neck and thud the lens came off. I must have unknowingly bumped the lens detach button and it released. From this estimate it was a lot worse than it looked

Here is what the estimate says;

"Repair will require complete disassembly of your lens, replacement of the optical stabilizer lens group unit, rera barrel, second group zoom cam, thrust ring, H2 and rail zoom cam unit, main zoom barrel two, connection ring, and motor base ring. During reassembly we will clean and lubricate your lens internally as necessary. Upon reassembly we will perform adjustments as required and clean the lens exterior.
The charges for this repair are $400.00 parts and $245.00 labor for a total of $663.00 including $18.00 return shipping and handling (UPS Ground).
The parts required are not currently available in the United States, upon your approval of this repair, they will be ordered from the Sigma factory in Japan. You should expect the repair to be completed in 15 to 20 business days.

Additional Info:
High parts cost advisory: This lens is available from on-line retailers for around $1200.00"

I don't have the funds to replace this right now. I'm crushed and will be lost without it. I'll be saving for a nice used copy or might give the Tamron a shot, how do you feel the Tamron compares to the new Sigma?

Had to vent and kick myself for allowing this to happen.:o
