Australian K-1 Owners

Australian laws say advertised or quoted prices must be inclusive of GST. It is illegal to quote a price then try and add GST.

The ATO and ACCC websites confirm this.

minolta flashes with the 645N, will they work?

If the flash has a standard hotshoe mount, not the unique Minolta flash mount that they adopted in the 90s it will work in manual mode or 'A' mode. It will not work in TTL mode nor will it auto zoom. If you manually zoom it remember to allow for the different fov of medium format lenses compared to the Minolta's 35mm markings.

My advice would be to buy a Pentax or Pentax dedicated Metz flash from the same era as your camera. They are pretty cheap, will allow TTL (depending on the model), should automatically correct for the difference in fov and will work with Pentax flash cables so you can use them off camera.

flash sync / lens mount rants

Anvh you can test if the shutter can synch at >250 quite easily.

Set the camera and external flash to manual and set the shutter speed to 250. Turn off SR if you think it has an effect. You will find a dark bar on one edge of your image because the second shutter curtain has started to move across the sensor before the flash fires. That is the only real limitation.

You will find that focal plane shutters that have flash synch speeds of 250 or more are more expensive to make. Eg those in the Nikon FM2 and F4 synch at 250 and were made of titanium while the Olympus OM3 and OM4TI. Had cloth shutter curtains and flash synch speeds of 90.

The only firmware limitations are in the auto exposure modes and are there to stop you accidentally doing the above.

K-5 II for Wedding Photography

I've shot weddings professionally using *ist D, K10D, K20D, K7, K5 and now K5IIS. I've always had excellent results, with me being the limitation not the cameras.

The secret is to know your gear so that you can get the best out of it without losing the trust of the wedding party. If you are fiddling around and don't come across as competent you won't have completely willing subjects. If you know what the limitations of your equipment are you will get more keepers and fewer wasted shots.

Sensor cleaning

I've been using the Arctic Butterfly brush to clean the sensors in my Pentax DSLRs for around 10 years. I have not had to use a wet clean in all that time.

I'm pretty sure if you search the forum you will find plenty of posts from people who are happy with this product.

Cheers
Col

Pentax K-30 twin lens kit on Groupon Australia

Not bad but look at the second lens, it's an old design and not optimised for digital imaging. Still it might be fine, take a look at the reviews in here to see.

MOST importantly the actual seller isn't identified and the fine print doesn't say that you get Australian warranty. In fact it says 'You must pay all expenses of claiming the warranty unless otherwise agreed in writing with the merchant' which suggests you will need to ship the camera to Hong Kong or similar if it malfunctions.

Teds sell the K30 for $599, with the 18-55 lens only for $700 and with an 18-200 for $800 and you will get Australian warranty no arguments. I'd try them and other local stores and see if you can't get a 2 lens kit for a comparable price and have some peace of mind. You'd also support the local economy which can only be a good thing.

Recommend me a Macro Flash Please!

Find a Colin flash unit. It's like a ring flash but has 3 separate flash units that can be swivelled out or in.

Alternatively get a longer lens to give you more working distance between the subject and the end of your lens.

Pentax k 5 vs k 5 ii

If you want to keep your gear for a long time spend more money on lenses and less on a body to start. You will be disappointed with the results of expensive body and cheap lens while the combo of cheaper body like the K30 and DA* lens will make you happy. The K30 has the same sensor as the K5 and K5ii.

Then as you develop as a photographer and know what you really want to do with the camera you will be in a position to judge whether the body is stopping you from taking the shots you want. If it is that's the time to trade up. If it's not buy more good lenses.

As a rule of thumb half your budget should be put aside for your main lens. I started with the *istD and moved up to the K10D and wasn't happy with the results from it till I upgraded my lenses too. There is no point having a camera that out resolves your lenses.

Welcome back to photography in general and to PF in particular.

You can't get better value than the K5 and Pentax equipment is generally cheaper than the big 2 unless you are looking at rare or exotic stuff. I hope you enjoy your photography.

No point saving for the Sigma 300 2.8 if you buy any K mount camera. Sigma don't make it in Pentax mount and probably never will.

Do you know what the change from K7 to K5 is. I'm not aware of any changes to flash function between the two cameras. My flashes work exactly the same but they are Pentax.

You should have them both turned off when mounting or unmounting the flash.
What you describe sounds like a short across the hotshoe terminals.

K10D Exposure Meter Question

Don't pay too much attention to what it looks like on the LCD, it's what it looks like on a calibrated monitor that counts.

If you are shooting RAW the LCD shows the embedded jpg file. Have you tried adjusting the brightness of the LCD?

I had a K10 for a couple years and if anything it underexposed by approximately 1/3 stop.

SOPA and PIPA

The point of closing sites down is to show politicians that we are not morons who will meekly surrender to their ill considered whims. The proposed legislation will do nothing to prevent piracy but will punish and limit the activities of a great number of completely innocent and law abiding web users.
The only thing politicians understand is popularity and if they were to receive large numbers of complaints from their constituent voters about being unable to access their favourite site due to an online protest against this ludicrous legislation they would reconsider supporting it.
Regardless of whether you support the strike action I urge you to write to your local politician and voice your concerns about this legislation's attack on your individual freedoms and right to determine what you will and won't view on-line. How long before there are amendments proposed to ban your access to the net and/or confiscate your computers because you made a comment that the government didn't agree with or preferred people not to see.
We have already had suggestions in Australia that all web traffic be filtered to ensure that our extremely sensitive population are not offended by anything on-line. That one will actually work because it would slow access times down so much that we won't actually be able to view anything at all.

You don't actually say - are you setting the flash to 2nd curtain synch in the camera?
