Again, another tough one as there are many creative and well done difficult shots. No. 12 has my vote for its creativity.

Australian Rainbow Lorikeet in flowering gum

The colourful rainbow lorikeets are a very common parrot along the eastern coast of Australia, they will often just keep an eye on you instead of flying off as you approach. Gum trees are also plentiful; they stand even stiller.

Eastern Australian Rainbow Lorikeet

This rainbow lorikeet is a fairly common bird along the Australian east coast and tame enough to quietly walk up to within a couple of metres. Here it is eating the nectar from our flowering gum (actually, it is watching me sneak up onto it).
I am finding the Pentax K30 a terrific camera to use. I am discovering new ways to use it every time I spend time with it. Last October I found the SCN , Moving Object setting which made it possible to take some spectacular photos when we went whale watching.

Beginners astrophotography with the K-30

I have successfully managed to take several sessions of interval photography of the sunset and night sky. It took a bit to work out a higher ISO is a grainer picture. Even with "town" light pollution I can see the milky way in the pictures. See my upload in the welcome forum.

For the night, I am experimenting with ISO 3200, F3.5, Lens 18mm and an interval of 20 secs every minute. I have both Shake Reduction and Noise Reduction on. From what I see in this forum, people advise to have these two off and do "comparison" pictures with the lens cap on to get rid of "noise". Isn't this what Noise Reduction does? As long as "more than twice the exposure time fits into the interval time" there should be enough time for both these settings on.

I do have another fairly basic question though. With Autofocus off, how do I focus the K-30 at night, pointing to a dark sky? So far, I've done nothing except switch the AF.S/C/MF to the MF setting.

I've bought the K-30 for recreational astrophotography. It is the first DSLR I've had and apart from snap[shots, I have managed several reasonable interval shots of sunsets, night sky and a sunrise. I'm still working out how it works.
Very impressed so far with the K-30

new to digital astrophotography

Hi,

I live on the south-east coast of Australia and am starting to have time to enjoy using the recently purchased K30 with the 18-135mm lens. My previous experience was a few decades ago with a pentax SLR and film.

The first week or so with this DSLR I just used the auto (everything) to take pictures so I could get the feel for it. I am impressed. We live on a hill and using the interval method it created some very good timelapses of sunsets.

Now, I am attempting to take photos of the night time sky. My initial attempts were reasonable, but I have not yet worked out how to manually focus the camera at night. The settings I used were:
Mode M
Focus mode MF (when using AF.S the shutter would not work - just the green autofocus light would flash)
ISO 3200
F3.5
Lens 18mm
interval 20 secs every minute
Shake Reduction on
Noise Reduction on

Before going out and investing in a GPS or other accessories, I am making sure I know the basics of using the K30

Does someone know where I can find a basic step by step guide to astrophotography using the K30?

Peter
