Sony Nex shots better?

The K5 IIs should more than able to "compete" with NEX. According to DXOMark the K5 II has higher dynamic range and better low light ISO performance than the NEX-5R, for example.

Keep in mind that your Pentax might under-expose by default, so you can dial the exposure compensation up a little for a brighter image.

As far as the noise on the image, check your JPEG setting, try the same shot with another lens, somebody else mentioned about checking your NR (noise reduction) setting, and yea, try to post these two photos here :)

I second Peter, you can start by determining where it all went wrong. If the images you transfer to your computer look fine, then it's somewhere in the uploading process.

I use Picasa on my Windows machine, I like how Cloud-centric it is, among other features like batch-adjusting dates and times, etc.

Some help in upgrading PC

You mean PC2-5300 (667 mhz) right? It won't be a bottleneck, just don't sync the mobo FSB w/ the memory speed (your motherboard BIOS shouldn't run a sync by default unless you set it manually). If you want to sync, use PC2-8500 (1066mhz) memory.

I don't recommend spending a penny on your current infrastructure however, because the newer platform is far superior. I'm not talking about spending hundreds of dollars, even the cheapest i3 530 will do, but you do need to get a new mobo, etc.

i3 530 performance

It's only $99 in the US. Of course I don't know how much it costs in Australia, so you can be the better judge here, but if you can, hold off to get a bigger budget and upgrade to the new architecture.

Windows mail question?

It's probably in the configurations, check to make sure that your Windows Mail is configured properly in relation to the POP3 or IMAP server - you might need to call up your ISP to find out all the details.

Also try Thunderbird

As an example here's how one'd configure an email client w/ Gmail for IMAP:

Terrific choice, lots of people are looking at the Canon offering (S90) and ignoring this cam, something I could not understand. This is on my radar as well although I'm not in a hurry.

Reasons to keep your P&S

Lots of reasons, I'll just list two here that came to my minds first:
1) snaps in restaurants - do u really want to lug the heavyduty w/ u?
2) spare for friends - during outings, there was always a friend or two that didn't have a digicam, i never regretted lending my p&s to him/them, ever

China Travel

I wish you a memorable trip to China, where I was born some years ago :)

The places you're heading to are all relatively industrialized, so you're in good shape. Zoom lenses are definitely the better choices for a 1st time traveler that wants to capture "everything."

Here's some info that might be helpful:

Last time I was in Beijing ('06) the pollution was pretty bad that the sky was mostly grayish, so you may say that the sky was 'overcast' most of the time while I was there.

Guangzhou can get humid, I mean *humid*. Coming out from air-conditioned hotel, I could count in seconds before my clothes would stick to my skin. This was during June/July. You might also want to carry a small umbrella, because without warning the rain would pour down.

Guangzhou has a place called "computer city", just a strip of multi-story shopping centers that stock computing/electronics supplies. It's one of the biggest in China (people from other cities in China would buy wholesale from here and re-sell the items back home), so if you need an adapter, want to grab some chargers/batteries or anything else, just head there when you're in town. It's famous, just ask around for direction.

What I forgot last time was that some outlets in China are V shaped 3 slots, so I had to buy an adapter for my Sony camcorder, but other than that it's all good.

Have a blast! Keep safe, be alert and stay in the good parts of town and if you can, travel with Chinese friends. Wishing you and your new daughter lots blessings,

FA 77mm limited vs DA 70mm limited

Another vote for 70mm

You're going to get varied opinions asking a question like this but since the difference in price isn't significant, it really comes down to your call. For me personally, I took 70mm because of 1) price 2) size and 3) quality.

I guess you can say that there was nothing about the 77mm that motivated me to spend the extra $ for it. But do get what you really want, so you can spend less time thinking about the other choice and just enjoy using it.

Which one will you choose, FA31mm or DA*16-50mm ?

I'd take the 31mm personally but despite the praises the 31mm gets, it simply can't cover the range like the 16-50mm can, so it really depends on your needs.

Poor digital scans from Costco

Thanks for all the comments, but I think I'm staying away from Costco scans in the future.

I just had the DVD that none of my computers could open re-scanned at Costco. The other four DVD had photos scanned at ~6mp, this one came back with photos scanned to ~3mp, with the same problems that I noticed before concerning contrast, color, detail, etc.

Below is one example. Since I don't have the film copy side by side here I don't really expect anyone to really see what I'm talking about, but basically there's a loss of color, detail, and most problematic of all is that the photos come out way too contrasty and blown-out.

I definitely suggest those that plan to have their films scanned to DVDs at Costco double check to make sure that the right roll was scanned, and try the DVD at the printing station just to make sure it works. I live a good 10 miles away from Costco, add in the taffic three trips to their stores due to their mistakes just isn't worth it for me.

If anybody's going on Sunday let me know; I'll check this thread again on Sat evening. I plan to be there from ~8am - 12pm

Have fun y'all!

Very 'cool' image, but I feel that the subject isn't clear enough. If you're going for the 'butterfly' look it'd help if there were more 'wings', maybe a horizontal perspective, and more from the underside? Thanks for sharing though, I like the B&W treatment

I haven't done the video test, but for JPEG I've done comparisons among the different compression levels * to ****, and I don't notice any differences even when zoomed in 100%. I'm suspecting that the differences will show up in some shots, but I'm not motivated to use anything above **

DA 15mm, DA 21mm, or something else?

Looks like you've made your decision already - I've always seen the 35mm as the ultimate compact prime, ~50mm after the crop factor, macro capability, fast @ 2.8 with a fine built :)

I like the 15mm over the 21mm simply because it's wider, typically when I use it I stop down anyway so f/4 doesn't bother me. 21mm would be a fine lens to use for street photographer IMO

Enjoy your new toys!

Pentax K7 and underexposure

My K-7 underexposes about 1/3 - 2/3 stop, I kind of like it this way since I like to 'tune up' the brightness myself rather than letting the in-camera JPEG engine taking over :) My Nikon overexposes about the same amount.
