Too much noise on K-1

Gerard, can you show a few examples? My K1 produces very low noise images.
If I push my PP with +3 and use extreme sharpening the images can look very noisy but that's to be expected.

Is it just my lens or... Pentax D FA 24-70 f/2.8

Hi there.

last week I purchased the Pentax HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR for use with my K1.
It back focuses a lot and even with +10 AF adjustment it still isn't as sharp as with pictures taken with Live view.
The lens has also focus shift which causes the focus to move even further backwards when stopping down.
I already have the AF adjustment set to +10 which helps a bit but it isn't enough.
Not happy about this. This is quite an expensive combo.. K1 + 24-70 f2.8.
Sent contact request to Ricoh and hope to hear from Ricoh soon.

K-3 and the red cloth

The problem isn't the camera but the software you use.. the detail is there but your software decides to remove all detail in red.
Below how it could look like (this is rendered with my own raw viewer that also does NR using bilateral filtering.)

The S-type from is really great with my K-5.
The combination with a Samyang 85mm f1.4 is awesome, i can now make tack sharp images and focusing is very easy.
I would recommend it to everyone who does manual focusing with f1.4 lenses!

This focusing screen really rocks!
I have it installed now, no shims yet because it is almost spot on.

I can recommend this for all people who have manual f1.4 lenses (like my SamYang 85mm f1.4) and want great sharpness.

The I Can't Be Happy With My Camera Club

I for sure would like to complain about not being happy with my new K-5.
ever since i got the camera it is overcast here and i feel that it has to do with the firmware. I updated the firmware and it seems there are now some breaks in the overcast but barely enough to go out and have some fun.
Colors are dull and horizons foggy. Somehow i believe that we need a firmware fix for this to make sure we have cloudless skies and razor sharp horizons.
There is also something wrong with the WR. Everytime when looking out the window and there is a drizzle and i put the 18-55 WR lens on the camera. Much to my amazement the drizzle will have stopped when i go out the front door. The opposite seems to happen when i put my beloved Sigma 50-150/2.8 on the camera which has no WR.

I think i have to send back the camera for repairs..

I have had similar problems, solution:
format the SD card with your camera and copy the firmware file to the sd card. now do the update as usual and all will be fine.

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 vs. Tamron 28-75mm 2.8

Frogfish, i wish you were right. Just checked pricing for the Tamron (~300 euro) and the Sigma (~600 euro) here.
Also my recommendation of the 18-135 as a standard lens replacement needs some consideration. It will give a wide range plus WR. By no means the same thing as the 2.8 zooms but intended for a quite different use case.

Has Pentax not been forward thinking enough?

Apart from others' views i like the idea of a square sensor.
There will be some vignetting at the far corners but it will be quite easy to switch from landscape to portrait without rotating the camera. Even after taking the image it will still be possible to choose the orientation without compromise.

losing the SR in a Pentax camera may sound shocking to most but it may enable a different targeted market of technical DSLR users. People used to shooting with film will remember how to ensure image quality without SR.

If Pentax would decide to make a FF camera without SR i would surely buy it if the body would be below 1500 euro's. Preferably a sensor that has about 18Mpix and similar or better characteristics than my K-5.
A square sensor FF? .. i'd pay up to 1800 euro's for such a Pentax body with similar characteristics..

Just my personal opinion of course..

Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 vs. Tamron 28-75mm 2.8

The Sigma 17-50/2.8 is twice the price of the Tamron 17-50/2.8 so if it is not the slightest bit better then it would be a bad choice of Sigma.

Have not tried the Sigma yet but do have the 28-75/2.8 from Tamron. That is a real sharp lens and has come in handy at many occasions. The 16-45/4 from Pentax may be a bit slower but using it at 16mm makes up for the higher aperture by being able to user longer exposure times.

Only if the Sigma 17-50/2.8 has stellar performance at 2.8 i would be considering buying it.

In short, Tamron 17-50/2.8 is a great replacement for the standard zoom within most people's budget.
The latest 18-135 from Pentax might be an even better replacement due to more zoom and having WR.

Can't agree more with Janneman.
Apparently there are web shops that expect prices to fall and get pre-orders they can fulfill once the prices have dropped sufficiently.
However no shop in the Netherlands that i know of (i have been looking around a lot on the web) seem to have any K5 in stock.
So this seems like a difficult situation to judge.

There will always be some 'gray' import dealer somewhere but i doubt they will cover warranty etc.

So for now it seems there is no place in the Netherlands to go and buy a K5. Therefore the prices don't mean a thing either.

Kx vs K7 keeper rate

with available sunlight the K-7 is my favorite. During a photoshoot of a band playing at night i had way more keepers with my K-x. This is mainly because with artificial light the high ISO performance of the K-x is stunningly better than the K-7.
Both cameras seem to do quite well in respect to focus and proper exposure. So it all comes down to the person handling the camera i.m.h.o.

looking at the EXIF data from both jpgs they both seem to be taken with a K20D.
The 9357 version seems very well exposed. It has way more overall proper exposure and since it was shot at ISO 100 i am sure when processing the RAW file you can get even more detail from the darker areas.

Free camera "checkup" with 2 yr warranty?

would make perfect sense i.m.h.o.
Cameras returned for a complete check-up are an invaluable source of information for a camera manufacturer. The best way to find out how a product behaves over time is to monitor it. So in all I think their deal is mutually benificial. Now I wish I had gotten extended warranty on mine.

K20D Image Crooked

A simple trick to test is to take a picture with the camera of the camera itself in a mirror. If the bottom of the camera is at an angle then the sensor must be at an angle. I used this technique to verify if it was me holding the camera tilted or that it was the image sensor. It appeared it was me holding the camera at an angle. Somehow i have 'lost' my proper sense of the horizon and that shows on my pictures if I don't use the electronic level of my K-7.

Poll: Second body choice if you have a K-7
Posted By jan rinze

I have a K-x as a second body. the menus are quite similar. Of course the K-7 has more settings and options but in general the menu is quite similar. What strikes me most is that the layout of the buttons is different which sometimes causes me too look twice to see where they are.

Not a big deal. The K-x I mainly use if high ISO becomes more important.
