HD FA35 f/2 vs FA35 f/2 - hybrid aspherical vs ground glass aspherical element?

For the original lens. smc FA 35mm f/2, hybrid aspherical element is mentioned in the first description paragraph here:

smc PENTAX-FA 35mmF2AL / Wide-Angle Lenses / K-mount Lenses / Lenses / Products | RICOH IMAGING

"This lens provides sharp images with high contrast over the entire image and at all focal lengths.
[FA 35mm F2 AL] The lens has an optical system using a hybrid aspherical lens and ghostless coating..."

Aspherical lenses are described at the Lens Technology page (click on About lens technology on the FA 35 page):

"AL=Aspherical Lens Various types of aberration can occur in optical lenses that hinder the achieving of the ideal imaging performance. One type is spherical aberration where the light rays do not converge in a single focal point, resulting in blurring of the point image. Aspherical lenses (AL) can be used to minimize this aberration and reduce the number of component lenses for enabling a compact, high-performance lens design. In addition to glass-molded aspherical lenses, PENTAX has developed hybrid aspherical lenses, where special transparent resin is affixed to optical glass, and resin molded aspherical lenses. The optimal aspherical lens is selected based on the lens configuration, aperture size, application, and other factors."

I wonder what is the significance of the plural "hybrid aspherical optical elements" indicated in the description for the new lens.

I am trying to do the same. As a professional engineer/scientist, I'm afraid that I tend to focus too much on the technicalities of photography. I think that I'm very adept at picking a flaw in an individual pixel...

So, I'm trying to concentrate on the 'soft' aspects of the art of photography. I'm happy with my APS-C kit, which seems to produce good results at the moment, providing I pay attention to lighting, composition, exposure, perspective, and so on.

On the other hand... maybe that new HD DA* 11-18mm lens might improve my images significantly... haha.

@jcphoto, you did well on your first repair. Congrats on attempting a slightly difficult job.

And, thanks for documenting and presenting your work. It will be useful to others, I'm sure.

As others have suggested, compatible tools are available, check Amazon, for example. JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers and 'lens spanners' (for removing element rings, etc) can be acquired at modest cost.

11-18 and revamped 35mm F2 on january 31?

I looked at the actual prices shown at Photoprice.ca:

D-FA 24-70mm: USD 1000, CAD 1600 (1.6 x)
D-FA* 70-200mm: USD 1800, CAD 2500 (1.38 x)
D-FA 15-30mm: USD 1300, CAD 1900 (1.46 x)
D-FA* 50/1.4: USD 1000, CAD 1600 (1.6 x)

The new DA* 11-18mm is listed at MSRP USD 1,400. So, I guess a Canadian price of roughly $1,900 (1.35 x). It might sell for less, though, say $1600.

Edit: It is now listed at Amazon.ca for CAD $1,899.99 and "Temporarily out of stock."

Pentax DA★11-18mm F2.8ED DC AW 11-18mm f/2.8-22 for KAF3 Cameras Wide-Angle Lens Fixed Zoom Lenses, Black: Amazon.ca: Camera & Photo

And the new FA 35mm f/2 is listed on Amazon.ca at CAD $549.99.

Alas, there is no announcement yet on the Ricoh Imaging Canadian site... maybe their webmaster couldn't start the computer in the cold weather.

Based on the relative prices of the other recent lenses (e.g., D-FA*) I would guess that the Canadian prices will be in the ballpark of CAD $1,900 and $500-600.

Pocket book that was in bag of K1000 goodies

That looks like a pretty slick little fieldbook. It must have been quite useful back 'in the day'.

The DoF 'computer' is simple to use yet it yields numbers that can be viewed directly across a range of f-numbers or distances. I especially like how the instructions are clearly and simply expressed.

Neat find in the bag! What other goodies did you get?

I think that certainly some people would expect quiet-focusing lenses but I don't know whether that's a prevalent view amongst users of other brands, especially concerning small prime lenses in general and this lens in particular. For some people, screw-drive could be a show-stopper, while others would prefer an in-lens drive but might be willing to live with screw drive.

@reh321, our posts didn't refer to the situations in which users would demand quiet lenses, such as weddings and theatres as mentioned elsewhere in this thread. However, I would think that the new FA 35/2 almost certainly wouldn't be a primary lens in those settings, if used at all, so the practical issue of focusing noise might be moot. Of course, there are a number of "very quiet" lenses under the Pentax brand.

What percentage of other users do you think would preclude Pentax because of the screw-driven lens families? Besides anecdotal accounts, I think that any recent valid surveys -- if they exist -- would help us to understand the possible aversion to the screw-drive and the Pentax brand.

I don't own an FA 35/2, but my impression is that it's a fine lens, based on many comments I've read here on Pentax Forums and the reviews in the review section. Indeed, if Ricoh were to scour PF for signs of interest, they would almost certainly conclude that this FA model is well regarded and probably worthy of a modest tweak.

As for the presumed screw-drive, many folks seem to be happy enough with the existing screw-driven lenses in the FA- and DA Limited series. No, they're not as quiet as the SDM, DC and PLM lenses, but I wouldn't say the screw-and-gear noise is outrageous. Of the lenses in my kit, the only one that annoys me occasionally is the 35mm Limited, when it racks from MFD -- but that's a unusually long focus throw.

Further indicators:

- Top plate, screw near the prism housing. There appears to be indications of underlying corrosion or pitting on the plate surrounding the screw, suggesting an over-paint.
- Top plate, area between the rewind knob and prism housing -- several dust specks appear in the paint. It's difficult for an amateur to get a dust-free result when spray painting; an original factory job would have been clean and smooth.
- Film advance lever -- rough trailing edge suggests an over-paint of a worn or corroded lever.
- Frame counter has been re-assembled 180 degrees out of its correct position. Centre screw of shutter speed dial shows marks, possibly a slip of a tool. The camera has been worked on, which would not necessarily be unusual for a legitimate repair. However, the top and bottom plates probably were removed to be spray painted. I don't see any evidence that the plates were masked with tape in situ.

Regardless, the body is indeed "black" and the seller claims someone told him it "could have been" a factory original. Buyer beware.

The lens appears to be in good condition.
