PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM (Sale/Trade)

Asking Price
600.00 GBP

Item Location
Oxfordshire (UK)

Item Description
Due to low use, looking to sell my Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM in Pentax fit.

Its a great portrait lens, but does not really get much use anymore as I tend to use my FA43 and FA100 Macro.

Its in great condition, and comes with the original case, original front and back caps as well as the 2-part hood (although the petal hood part is cracked and repaired) and the original box.

Bought from SRS (used) back in late 2015 and used with great effect on the K-3II and K-1:

Not sure on price, looking for 600 inc UK Delivery.

Would possibly be interested in a DA*55 or Voigtlander 58mm/90mm APO as a swap.

More Limited lenses

I don't see any reason for a new D-FA Limited to keep the Aperture Ring/Screwdrive. Pentax needs to move on and keep up to date with the market, yes I love that I can use my FA43 with my MZ-S, which is lovely but its not going to keep them in business.

I think a ~20mm f4 and ~135mm f2.8 would round off an excellent collection with the FA31, FA43 and FA77.

Give them internal motor and WR and be done with it, at the expense of ultimate speed.

I had this with my Sigma DP1X (28mm/APS-C compact) and its the main thing that has put me off the GR so far. Also, I've got used to walking around in the rain/snow with the K-3II and K-1!

I only had the FA24 on a K-3II but my impressions were:

Plus
Sharp in the centre wide open (well mine was)
Good size/weight/speed combination
Excellent flare resistance
Sunstars
Good contrast, even into bright light/wide open

Cons
Bokeh is OK, smoother than the FA43.
Finish scratches very easily
Corners, even on APS-C did not catch up till f5.6 at least. For landscape, f8 or better.
C/A although as mentioned Lightroom can fix easily

I'd love to have another on my K-1.

I liked the FA43 on the K-3II, I loved it with the MZ-S (Perfect combo BTW) and I love it with the K-1....

Its just the best walk around lens, if it had WR then it would be perfect!

Using the DA* 300 on a K-1

The DA*300 is excellent on the K-1, it behaves like any other 300mm lens, as you would expect.
I've not had mine too long but some shots from a trip to the French Alps and the British F1 Grand Prix earlier in the year

DA*300, what a Star!

Just picked up a DA*300 for my K-1, what a dream lens! I was originally looking at a DA*200 but I knew I needed something longer for for the F1 GP so found this at a dealer for a decent price.

Its actually smaller than I imagined, and very usable to hand hold for a few hours, like at the F1 GP over the weekend.

I plan on adding a DA*200 and DA*55 too at some point....

One of the first test shots, pin sharp focus on the Cows nose, showing all the flies!

And a big test at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix at the weekend! AF was quick (apart from when it missed and racked all the way back, an AF Limited would be ideal) and AF-C tracking was not too bad at all I found.

I've had the following on the MZ-5N/MZ-S or the K-01/K-3II.

FA*24 f2 - Great on crop as a fast ~35mm, excellent sharpness in the center wide open, only 'good' stopped down all over. Poor lens hood design and easily scratched.

FA20-35 f4 - Excellent wide zoom, very compact and light. Sharp pretty much at all apertures and zoom range although quite a lot of aberrations wide open @20mm.

FA43 f1.9 - Excellent, my favorite lens.

FA50 f1.7 - Great small and fast prime, only sold as I used the FA43 f1.9 Limited more.

FA135 f2.8 - Very compact for a fast short telephoto prime, somewhat nervous bokeh in some situation but very sharp from wide open. Again some aberrations wide open but easy to fix in PP.

All 4 had quite fast AF, the FA20-35 and FA50 especially but all a little noisy as you would expect from screw-drive.

K-1 or KP for portraiture

I have to say, going from a K-3II to a K-1, and doing lots of portraits for work, I found the shallower depth of field when using a wider aperture actually a hindrance, as I was having to stop down to f4 or smaller to get any amount of the face in focus.
This was offset though with the exceptional higher ISO performance of the K-1, and the KP looks to be almost as good now though.

How will the new DFA85 1.4 be better than the FA85?

I was interested in the announcement for the new D-FA* 85mm, I currently own a Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM which is excellent although I don't tend to use it that often for casual shots as its quite big/heavy. I don't doubt after seeing the prototype of the new D-FA* 50mm f1.4, that the new Pentax will be larger and heavier than the Sigma, much like the new Sigma Art Lenses.

I can see the attraction of getting a standard set of primes out first (Fast f1.4 24mm, 50mm and 85mm for example) but for me, a more compact ~85mm f1.8 with WR and DC motor would be amazing. I loved using the old K85 f1.8, so small and beautiful build!

I still think the best, however for bokeh, transitions and sharpness was the Voigtlander 90mm f3.5 APO (both shot wide open at f3.5)

I have to say, as a K-1 and MZ-S owner, I do miss the lightweight/portability of the MZ-S/FA43 combo.

My perfect walk-around, just sling it on and shoot away. I have yet to really bond with the K-1/FA43 combo, the D-FA 28-105 gets far more time on it so far.

The MZ-S has excellent handling with the smaller lenses (FA43, FA50, FA20-35, FA135 etc), I don't doubt that the size/grip is much better on the K-1 for longer lenses.

I have the K-1/D-FA28-105mm combo, coming from a K-3II/DA*16-50mm, the former feels a lot better balanced and more reliable results (AF, Sharpness etc).

Thanks, I'm still searching for a compromise for a FF wide angle, something with straight blades like the FA43, the only real option seems to be anoter FA*24....

Lovely shots, I have often thought of downsizing my Sigma 85mm f1.4 to the FA77, DA70 or D-FA100 Macro but not quite decided yet.

I would love a more compact portrait lens like the K85 or VL90 I used to have

I think the only downside of the older 85mm f1.4 HSM was its size and weight, other than that its pretty spot on!:)
