Traveling to Germany and Amsterdam - looking for kit advice

So what do you like to shoot...would be my first question? For me, I would take the 15mm and the 100mm macro for sure - for portraits, flowers, landscapes, and flora, then the 24-70mm. Maybe add either the 70-200mm or 31mm, depending on favorite subjects/regular preferred lenses.
Of course, I could get along with just the 15mm and 28-105mm and one extension tube, but that is what suits my subjects of choice...

I would chose Kodak Portra 160 and underexpose one or two stops. Question is, are you going to make prints, scans, or both, and do you mind doing minor manipulations in any processing software? Another question, are you willing to use a tripod? Portra have wider latitude than Ektar and so are better suited to capture the wide dynamic range or such a shot. That said, most premium 100 and 200 iso films are probably also up to the task, depending on your final product output, but having used Portra 160 and Pro-image 100, I would always go with Portra.

Worth repairing a "soft" Pentax DA 1224mm lens?

Sounds like something is off with this lens. I would file a claim and send it back, if that still works. Remember - you can file a claim even if the seller does not accept returns. Maybe someone got sand or dirt in it, took it apart, and failed to put it back together again? The grittiness in the focusing is a tip off for sand and/or incorrect re-assembly, or other damage. Also sounds like there are centering/lens alignment issues, which is not uncommon with ultra-wide zooms. Sometimes an drop on a carpet or linoleum does not show up externally, but can be responsible for all your issues, as well...

Pentax really does need to step up and create a FF 1.4x converter for their FF Lenses. Never understood why they came out with one that only covers aps-c, especially at $600 (now about $400), making it the most expensive converter I have ever contemplated.

Of course, a 1.4x FF converter would make the 100mm macro more versatile as well...

JCDOSS - sorry for your fall and injury.
On a side note,

I have had the good fortune of seeing one of Jim Marshall's main, heavily used and bruised Leicas under glass.

See:
Your Mark Story: Jim Marshall | Made In Wetzlar
I have a K2DMD that looks about as bad, but is fully restored/refurbished. If there is not already a photo gallery here at forum, suggest someone creates one that "showcases" battered or heavily worn Pentax bodies and lenses that are still working and providing useful service. Of course, hard to not miss the brassing of many, vintage film cameras and lenses. Just a thought, since Pentax is the camera of choice for great and rugged adventures...

Good to know that electronics and photography equipment is now considered obsolete in California after only seven years. Now I will start looking more closely at manufacturing instead of when I buy something, especially if it is expensive. Maybe we all should pay more attention to reviews by Ifixit and Lensrentals in their breakdowns of items, or simply buy stuff that was made to last from decades ago. Still love and use my Pentax KX, K2dmd, and Nikon F2 & F3, and all my manual lenses which have held up way beyond these new standards of obsolescence, and most that still work on modern DSLRs.

So my understanding is, there is a law - could be federal or just state (California in my case) - that requires manufacturers to have parts available for consumer electronics for at least ten years. However, in your case, it is clear the part(s) are available, so I must assume your service center - wherever it may be - is simply feeding you a line(s) of BS...

200K shutter actuations seems pie-in-the-sky when you read this:

or this:

Real world averages seem significantly lower, although 200K is not unheard of.

Just found and read the following post by the editor and founder of Imaging Resource:
The end is (probably) nigh: After almost 22 years, Imaging Resource is set to wind down in early 2020
This is my second favorite website for Pentax reviews - besides Pentaxforums, of course. I believe that Dave is one of the few reviewers that gives Pentax equipment an objective and fair shake.
What is new and exciting, that will surely benefit Pentax/Ricoh cameras in the future, will be his practical and condition authentic, weather-sealing tests of photography equipment.
Please consider supporting his future efforts in the variety of his suggested ways...

Everyone should remember, there are many settings for Fuji jpegs and many different ways - and software options - to process Fuji and Pentax raw files. All these options can seriously influence results. What also creates skepticism for me, is the very different sharpness outcome in the background which leads me to conclude that focus points chosen on the lenses are not equal, and not necessarily that one lens is way sharper than the other. In my opinion, the laws of physics relative to depth-of-field should create much closer results than what is illustrated in this video. I do believe that Pentax lens coatings are superior and the additional lens elements in the Fuji can create more image degradation, although Fuji's coatings have - at least in the past - had a pretty good reputation, starting with EBC coatings in film 35mm and large format lenses. Bottom line - one lens and lens review does not a reputation make. Also, and as usual, ultra-wide zooms are some of the most difficult lenses to manufacture and sample issues are more common with these than all others. Finally, many do not believe that the new three series sensor is as good as the two series and X-H1 for still images (since it is optimized for video), and I agree with that observation when comparing sample images in a controlled environment.

So I was thinking about all the people that really want a Pentax APS-c mirrorless yesterday, after reading a review of the new Nikon z50. Honestly, I cannot find anything on this camera that would make it more attractive than the K70 or KP, except maybe a little better autofocus for sports and video. For 4K though, it uses a 1.5 crop of the aps-c sensor. Considering it is priced higher than the KP, has no IS, pixel shift, rugged, weather resistant lenses, swivel screen, vertical grip, elaborate lens line up, but has a lower res sensor (20mp), etc., me thinks that Nikon has shown us the way to an underwhelming camera that basically is a little smaller, lighter, and mirrorless, but really does not really do anything to help anyone take better photographs unless sports, action, and low-res video are primary areas of interest (although these benefits have yet to be proven or established!) Just my take and two cents on this new camera model by another great manufacturer that has just recently crossed into the mirrorless market. However, proof will be in the actual sales figures and, just like with Pentax, I am rooting for Nikon to be a successful camera and lens manufacturer for many more years to come...

Pentax DA* 11-18mm review posted!

Concerning the Sigma 10-20mm, I recently decided to take advantage of the very low, current price of the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 at all dealers. I have been successfully using the old 10-20mm f4-5.6 for several years, but it is not the sharpest and not distortion free. I was hoping to get better autofocus in LV as well as some improved sharpness. However, after some basic tests, I found the bottom right frame to have some inexplicable softness at the apertures I use most often - 5.6, f8 and f11. At that matter, the overall sharpness declines noticeably at f11, besides the extra softness in the corner (in the last, bottom fourth of the frame). I have just ordered one more sample from another large vendor, hoping I will get a better sample from a different batch, but most likely will need to go to the 11-18mm, especially if the K3II replacement checks most boxes for me, although weight and cost remain an issue with this lens...

Thanks for sharing - very Interesting test but, these are two different lenses - 8mm being much wider than 11mm (difference in FF terms of 12mm vs. 16.5mm). Weird is the the difference in sharpness at same focal length, zoom, and aperture stop. Further, I say the X-T2, X-T20, and X-H1 have a better sensors for still photography than the three series cameras, which are optimized for video (other, more versed reviewers agree!). Also, I would have wanted another, additonal comparison at one other focal length to be more relevant - say 16mm which tops out the Fuji's range Lastly, would have loved to have seen the close-ups of the lens flares that are mentioned...

Forgot to mention that Rokinon, Wallimax, and Samyang still make manual focus lenses for Pentax. For APS-c, I believe the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, 18-35mm, and 18-50mm will be missed. About Sigma reliability - I have a nine year old 10-20mm that still works fine, a 100-400mm contemporary for Nikon that is three years old and works fine, a 70mm macro that is 10 years and is fine. A Sigma 20mm f1.8 that is 12 years old that works fine, but I have had a 28-105mm and 70-300mm that had their autofocus give up the ghost after 2-3 years. From what I have read, the Sigma 70-300mm has often been mentioned as having a dead autofocus issue, but maybe that because it is one of their most sold lenses as well?

I am not an engineer, but it seems like Ricoh/Pentax put a great deal of effort and engineering into the K-01 and Q cameras that could now be utilized, updated or modified to produce a great aps-c ,mirrorless cameras and produce a nice lens adapter that works well with various Pentax lenses, but then rebuild their primes and several, vital zoom lenses for a new ML mount. Reduce size and weight and then sell many new cameras and lenses. Fuji has shown us it can be done, but has too many cameras, not enough with IS, some lenses that have IS,- but many not, and many that are not WR and/or do not have an aperture scale. That said, sometimes I wonder how many designers and engineers are still fully employed by Ricoh/Pentax to undertake new camera and lens development...although they did manage to successfully come out with the GR3 recently, so a small zoom version seems viable.

Fuji just came out with such a kit lens - a 15-45mm - their smallest yet. This is for, and with, their beginner camera models - X-t100, X-A5, X-T30, etc. Still love my Pentax 18-50mm on my K30, but would love something wider way more, especially on a smaller size camera...

Everyone should remember - a dented thread can also mean that elements have been pushed/moved out of alignment. Serious, front lens dents often mean that a great deal of force has been exerted on a lens.
