Confession game: how many lenses do you have? Why do you keep them? Which was let go?

I just sold off most of my m43 lenses along with the DA 10-17 and the Rokinon 10/2.8. Other lenses that may be on the sell list (or maybe not) are the DA 12-24, DA 16-85, and the Tamron 70-200. This leaves a number of lenses that get no use but may be too cheap to be worth the trouble of getting rid of:

Vivitar 80-200/4.5
Pentax DA 18-55 I
Pentax DA 18-55 II WR
Pentax A 70-210/4 (rather beat up)
Pentax F 35-70/3.5-4.5
Pentax M 50/1.7
Pentax M 135/3.5
Pentax M 75-150/4
Pentax K 200/4
Olympus 14-54/2.8-3.5
Olympus 50/1.8
Vivitar 50/2.8 Macro (OM mount)

Then there's specialty lenses that get some use but not much:

Pentax M 20/4
Pentax K 28/3.5
Pentax K 35/3.5
Pentax FA 20-35
Pentax K 50/1.2
Pentax A 50/2.8 Macro
Pentax F 85/2.8 Soft
Pentax DA 100/2.8 Macro
Pentax DA 1.4x Converter

And then the main lenses of my APS-C kit:

DA 15/4
DA 21/3.2
DA 35/2.8
DA 55-300 PLM
DA* 300/4

And the main lenses for FF kit:

FA 43/1.9
DA* 300/4

F 17-28/3.5-4.5
DFA 15-30/2.8
DFA 28-105/3.5-5.6
FA-J 75-300/4.5-5.8

Pentax 70 - 210 vs Tamron 70 - 210 | Lens Review

Yes, the differences are insignificant. You wouldn't notice them in the gestalt of looking at an entire image. I'm wondering if these slight differences in resolution at long distances at the long end of the lens might be a consequence of Pentax's attempt to tweak the Tamron lens so that it renders better. Could it be that in an attempt to make the lens render in a more Pentax way a bit of resolution has been lost at longer distances? In my experience, my non-Pentax lenses do tend to be a little sharper at longer distances than my Pentax glass.

I was looking at some of the images over at ephotozine taken with this lens and they had one image of duck that was reasonably sharp, but featured a nicely rendered beak — very life-like and tactile. Maybe the Tamron wouild render that beak just as well, but without a comparison shot, how do we know? Pictures of distant cell towers and roofs and other trivial objects only provide a partial glimpse of what a lens can do. I want to see the kind of images I would use the lens for, were I to acquire it. Only then could I determine whether the lens is up to snuff.

Limiteds - DA 21 or DA 70 as my next lens? As a treat to myself...

If you own a K-1, yes — and for obvious reasons. But on APS-C you're not going to see much difference, and the DA 21 has to be significantly less expensive. What are A 20's going for? $500?

If choosing between the DA 21 and DA 70, I'd take the DA 21 every time. I just find it a lot easier to shoot at the focal range. My basic rule for shooting primes: take focal lengths that you're comfortable shooting with, that you can spend a lot of time at. 70mm is a nice place to visit, but do you want to spend quality time there?

And don't sell the DA 21 short when it comes to image quality. What it gives up with so-called distortion (easily fixed in a good raw converter) it more than makes with contrast, color, and rendering of detail:

I resisted the lure of the K-1 for several years. I toyed with picking one up in 2017, but it was still too expensive. In 2018 I was able to acquire a used K-1 with about 250 shutter actuations for a little over $1,300, which was a good price at the time. Probably my chief reason for acquiring the camera is would provide ample excuse for buying more lenses. I'm not someone interested in collecting scores of 50mm lenses or other cheap vintage optics that I don't really need. So a new platform allows me an opportunity to buy more lenses that I'll actually use. For the K-1, I have purchased the DFA 28-105, the F 17-28, the FA-J 75-300, the DFA 15-30, and the FA 43. One issue with FF is that good lenses are rather pricey. I'd love to replace that cheap and optically challenged FA-J lens with the DFA 70-210, but costs are prohibitive. I've been selling off lenses so I can afford the FA 31, but with this virus pandemic raging through the whole world, that's been put on hold.

An additional and more respectable reason for getting the K-1 was for greater resolution. I sell the occasional print online (through pixels.com), and the most lucrative sales are large prints. The largest print I've sold from a single APS-C image is 36 inches. The largest print I've sold from the a single image on the K-1 is 50 inches. That's not a huge difference, but it's something.

I was at Death Valley in mid-February. I saw this virus thing coming down the pike so I made sure I got my vacation in early this year, and if you're vacationing in winter, Death Valley is a prime place to go — the weather's likely to be close to perfect.

One reason to assume there won't be many people at Zabriskie Pt at dawn (the best time photograph at that location) is that if you can't stay in the park (Furnace Creek is very close), you're looking at an hour+ drive to get there from virtually any place you could stay (i.e, in Nevada). Also one thing I'm noting is in that during the off season a lot of people from foreign countries are visiting U.S. national parks — and that obviously won't be the case during the present crisis.

Another image from Death Valley, again with the DA 55-300 PLM:

Thanks. Zabriskie Point has become a popular place for photographers. Although I was the first one there early one February morning, by the time I left shortly after sunrise there were probably close to fifty people there. Probably considerably less now with the virus, but you're not likely to be alone.

Another shot at same place, also with the DA 55-300 PLM:
