A sailing friend of mine just bought a K1II, That makes 2 K1's for sure that I know about on the Avalon Peninsula!

Noticed this reflection from a Metropolitan Museum of Arts poster near the Xmas tree in my living room. Not sure how artistic it is, but it IS a cat! And the lens is the 40mm Ltd (xposted there).

Saying goodbye to the K-70

If you want really good low light, go with the K70/KP/K1. The nice thing is it saves on having to buy superexpensive, superheavy, low f-stop glass for many applications. (Hint: The 55-300mm PLM requires good high ISO performance in darker environments like where I live, but the K-70 delivers it.)

Re. K-3 vs. K-70 that is more of a choice between feature set and construction levels vs. low light performance.

The PLM might not match the highest grade professional lenses around, and it definitely is slow if you really truly need low f-stops (but really this is no longer so big a deal these days with modern hi-ISO-capable sensors), but it is very, very good.

On the water in my boat it is almost always the lens I mount for targets-of-opportunity.

Landscape Wide angle: need advice/tips

First piece of advice I can give is do not think of it as just another landscape lens. Leastways I've never liked the results over panos using longer FLs which capture far more detail.

Get close to the subject(s) as possible.

Which body to get?

Re. DSLR,,,If you are just looking for a new body (and aren't we all) I'd suggest a basic K-70 as it doesn't look like you're going to be overusing the system.

If looking used any of K-3, K-XP, KS2, K5, or K-70 at a good price. Avoid any used K-30 or K-50 as they have a known aperture control block issue though with legacy lenses you'd be less affected.

No present knowledge re. film.

Nature Ammonite in Austin

Dinner plate sized ammonite. Cretaceous layers here. PP with black level increase under the Contrast menu in Silkypix to bring out the shape more clearly. Note other shellfish present as well. Packing a brush would have helped, but I was planning on landscape not fossils.

Another vote for Hugein here. Also can be used in command line mode if something really specific is needed but that needs a much higher learning curve.

Silkypix 9 has a 30 day trial. It is very versatile. Main problem is learning curve and Japanglish manual. They work directly with Pentax to produce the more primitive DCU software that comes with Pentax cameras so there is never a problem with pixel shift should you be using that capability with your setup.

Anyone using a K70?

While I went with a K-70 for a K-50 upgrade today with the minimal price difference I'd go with a KP mainly for body construction superiority.

I went with a K70 for a K50 upgrade. At current prices the KP is only marginally more expensive. I'd go that way today for mainly body construction reasons. But it all depends if you want to stay with your present style or actually need a different camera entirely...which the K1 is.

Not exactly Earth's bones...but certainly Earth's exoskeletons!... Walnut Creek Park, Austin Texas.

Ammonite is, I think, Cretaceous in that area. As are the clams/mussels(?). Ammonite is dinner plate size.

Interestingly, this is where I also found a Pentaxian with a K-7 from California. 2 great finds!

Halftime commercials were boring. Picked up camera and took this with my 16-85 on a K-70. F4.5, 53mm, ISO 3200, 1/25 sec. Hand held but note the twitch in the hindleg.

With a K-70 and moderate care you can get as long as 1/10 sec at medium focal lengths easily. With a lot of care and good bodily bracing--like adapted target shooting techniques--I've gotten good results as low as 1/5 sec. With a modern camera this will get you pics in any situation you ought to be walking around in.

Here is one example I took just a few days ago testing out this very point just for the hell of it during a lull in a football game...

This is taken handheld at 1/25sec and ISO 3200. FL was 53mm on the 16-85mm zoom. This was after sunset and so the room was quite dark with just a desk lamp providing light for the whole room on that side and a TV on the other side of the room.

Just fooling around while watching football, but this really shows the capabilities of the K70/16-85mm combo. ISO3200, 1/25sec, handheld, stabilization on.

at higher res.

Never ceases to amaze me what a modern camera is capable of.
