What is a great picture anyway? And what is an actual bad picture?

Getting observation time on the Hubble Telescope is very competitive. It's not just a bunch of folk looking for "pretty" parts of the sky. The PR department likely chooses photos that have public appeal, but the fact remains that the photos are being taken for scientific purposes, not artistic ones.

NASA - The Hubble Space Telescope Observing Program
By Ray Villard, Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI)

I've made no such claim, so I'd ask you not to put words in my mouth. I am responding to your statement that "To me, there's no way that you planning out a concept and honouring it with subject, background and perspective choice isn't more artistic than other purposes of photography, like a medical X ray, or taking pictures of items for insurance documentation, or a selfie to show you were at the ball game."

These Hubble Telescope photos are beautiful but they are documentary shots, not artistic shots based on your own definitions. These shots are being made by scientists that have no interest in being "artistic"

But those photos are not composed. They are not the artful photography that you placed on the highest plane and shared an example of. They are documenting a sliver of space and are documentary photography in the strictest sense of the word yet to so many they inspire awe.

Rebuilding the mirrorless

With the new Nikon mirrorless pending and Canon already there with APS-C (along with Sony, Olympus, Panasonic), the reality is that a mirrorless Pentax is very unlikely to attract people already using other brands. In other words, a mirrorless Pentax would be for current Pentax users only, to have them supplement their current kit and reduce their desire to switch away. Because of this, a clean slate design with either a new mount or new body design is unlikely; there's simply not a big enough market to justify the investment in resources.

Yup, and the moment you add a full-frame sensor, the size difference between it and FF competitors diminish because the overall package of the K-01 + FA Limiteds is more competitive with cameras like the Sony A7 series and their comparable primes.

And adding a FF sensor to the K-01 is comparatively easier to do than many of the other alternatives discussed.

A full frame K-01 with the 31mm, 43mm and 77mm primes would be nice. A great quality, compact setup.

What would compel you to buy a K-01 with an EVF vs. a DSLR with an OVF?

Just put a FF sensor in the K-01 already. I'll buy it.

Is it a good idea to produce MX-2 with 1" BSI sensor?

The Nikon 1 system was a half-hearted effort that was priced much too high in order to not cannibalize D3xxx and D5xxx sales.

Would a 1" Q system sell? I don't know. As an owner of several Qs, the K-01, and a Nikon 1, I'm just fatally attracted to oddball cameras.

I'm ok with that and it would be the only 1" interchangeable lens system.

Lots of still competition in the 1" compact market with products from Sony, Canon, and Panasonic. An MX-2 with a 1" sensor would be me-too and only appeal to current Pentax owners. Don't know if that's a big enough market to warrant the investment. It may very well be.

Me, I'd prefer a Q with a 1" sensor...

CJR Special Report: Photojournalism’s moment of reckoning

"In interviews with more than 50 people, in a CJR investigation spanning more than five months, photojournalists described behavior from editors and colleagues that ranged from assault to unwanted advances to comments on their appearance or bodies when they were trying to work. And now, as the #MeToo moment has prompted change across a range of industries—from Hollywood to broadcasting to the arts—photojournalists are calling for their own moment of reckoning.

Women interviewed by CJR say two well-known photographers—Antonin Kratochvil and Christian Rodriguez—engaged in serial harassment and that VII, a prestigious collective, and the Eddie Adams Workshop ignored complaints of harassment."

What a cool idea! I bet you could 3-D print a mount that would clip to your phone and place the lens the necessary 27mm away from the sensor.

john, wishing he had the time and means to do this.
