The FA28/2.8 AL is a nice lens. Opinions differ on which is better, but I chose to keep mine over an F28/2.8 I had - despite the fact that I usually favor F series glass.

I use mine as an alternative to my FA31 when I think the risk of loss or damage is too great (such as on a bike ride) and I enjoy the results I get.

Exactly what I was going to say. The FA28 is unusual in that the optical formula was changed between the F and FA series'. I think the AL really was an improvement. The best I can tell, there were simply more forum reviewers who happened to get a bad copy of this lens (compared to the F28). But this is obviously a desirable copy.

Incidentally, sometimes a 'bad' copy of a lens simply needs to be sent in to someone like C.R.I.S. for an inexpensive repair, and it comes back a good copy. This is what happened on my FA20 - I gave them the best description I could of its lackluster performance, and it came back with really satisfying image quality!

The IQ wide open is impressive here, since - like all f/2.8 Pentax lenses I've seen (save perhaps some macros) - it really should be stopped down to at least f/3.2 for a noticeable IQ improvement.
