I find these discussions with pictures relevant to the lens besides my own blog posts and test images

1. Vivitar/Kiron 28mm f/2.5 in K mount
2. Pentax K 45-125mm f/4.0
Price adjusted lower as I am motivated to sell few more items in my gear after this thread.

Tokina zoom is sold and shipped

Tokina zoom is sold and shipped along with other items with free upgrade from regular to priority international. This is not my best looking packaging, probably a hassle to unwrap, but each item is cushioned individually for best protection against damage that I know of.

About the Pentax K 45-125mm

Some extra info and test pictures taken with this lens for the potential buyer. I love this lens but I don't use if often enough to justify keeping it. I hesitated before and now I revisit my gear list and decide to trim gear to a minimal set. I keep the other cheaper lens in my gear list -- Pentax DA 50-200 and Kiron 70-150 f/3.8 with similar focal range.

I once sold the DA 50-200 instead of this old lens due to better color, contrast and sharpness of this zoom lens. But my eyesight aged with astigmatism, I find the need of AF for help and I compromise on IQ in repurchasing my 2nd copy of DA 50-200 and have to let many of my MF lens go

Summary of my liking and dislikes:
  • + very good sharpness wide open
  • + color and contrast is great with this lens
  • + bokeh is decent if not excellent
  • + great focusing ring ideal for fast focusing with a loose ring
  • + optics is great though the aged design in K lens
  • + flare is well under control
  • + very similar focal length to DA *50-135, ideal for portrait, hence the nickname 'poor man choice of DA * 50-135. And I get poorer, and hence I kept the Kiron 70-150 f/3.8 instead.
  • + though without 'A' aperture, Av mode is quite accurate without need for Ev adjustment for most cases
  • ===
  • - the lens is macho lens with a heavy weight, almost similar to DA * 50-135, 615g/21.7oz
  • - one touch zoom design making zoom selection changed while focusing
  • - lens is front heavy with a tendency to drop zoom ring towards front
  • - manual focusing can be eye straining especially for those with poor eyesight, I use focus trap method to help
  • - like all manual focusing lens, the SR won't know unless you set the focal length right. In most of my test photos,
I set it at 120mm and forgot to change. You can still change with two methods:
    • Menu option -> Up Arrow Once -> SR focal length (preferred method)
    • Power Off then On -> Prompt for SR focal length

Some test pictures:

1/320 sec, f/4.0, 120mm , iso 200, -2/3 Ev, K100D

1/250 sec, f/4.0, 120mm, iso 200, 0 Ev, K100D

1/50 sec, f/4.0, 120mm, iso 200, +7/10 Ev, K100D
A lot of details for an old zoom lens

quite decent bokeh

quite decent bokeh

1/80 sec, f/forget_likely_f4.0, 120mm, iso 200, +1/3 Ev, K100D
lots of detail for a zoom

snapshot from quick focusing

Hin, what a great deal for the Tokina 28-70! I wouldn't let mine go that cheap.

As for the 45-125mm f/4, I also have that lens and can attest to its capabilities. Sharp wide open and with that great Pentax colour and contrast. This is the last item on my list of stuff to sell, and I'm hoping to raise enough funds before I reach the end of the list so I don't have to sell it

Thanks Mis for the support. I know I lowered the price too much for the Tokina zoom but I am determined to cut down my gear. It is on its way to France.

Hmm, no taker for the promotion. Should I extend it? Or should I withdraw to stay put?
