Wait, so this will turn my A 50mm f/1.7 into a 100mm f/3.4 1:1 macro?

Yes. Yes, it will do that, as well as turn it into a 100mm f/3.4 standard lens as well. With the compromises teleconverters introduce of course. A bargain to get to 1:1 and not be stuck there like with tubes. You wont have the use of the "A" aperture setting on your lens with this version of the teleconverter however. There are models of this teleconverter with electrical contacts however this isn't one.

Thanks for the question. I hope I answered it for you.

Regards,
Mike

Yes indeed -- here is one I took using the PK-A version of this 2x teleconverter with the A-50/1.17 ...

Thanks for the bump, and could you tell me what post work, if any was done to that image?

Regards,
Mike

PS. $70 to get to 1:1 with FREE shipping and any old 50mm lens that's kicking around is pretty cool.

Sure ... it was a while ago so this might not be accurate though. Using Lightroom 2:

- increase exposure 0.67 stops
- set white balance to daylight
- increase colour noise reduction and luminance smoothing (I shot at ISO400 with a K10D, not a good thing if it's still underexposed)
- reduced vibrance to -20
- upped sharpening and details to just a smidge higher than the defaults
- export to JPEG for this screen size

Is this thing strong enough to hold the Vivitar 105mm macro and turn it into a 210mm?

Also- without the electrical contacts, does that mean I have to actually use the aperture ring, or can I still use my little e-dial to set aperture?

If the answer to 1 is yes, and the answer to 2 is no (meaning I can still use the e-dial), I think I'll buy it.

Tim,

Sure, the Teleconverter can "hold" a Vivitar 105 Macro. I'm not sure that you'd still be 1:1 even with both the teleconverter and the macro lens all the way out to their closet focusing distance.

The 105 Macro is 1:1, I assume. The VMFTC turns a 50mm lens 1:1 while doubling the focal length. So, according to my horrible math skills...

Doubling the focal length on the 105mm Macro would put you at 210mm and down to 1:2. Macro focusing the teleconverter would get some of that back but still wouldn't be 1:1 I don't think.

Second question: It would all be manual, you would set aperture using the aperture ring on the lens.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks for the response Mike...

That seems odd to me- I figured that a 2x should just double your barrel length, while increasing your aperture and I guess reducing your minimum focusing distance, but allowing your magnification to be increased?

I guess that is stupid though to think that if the barrel is twice as long, the aperture twice as small, and the minimum focusing distance twice as far (or whatever it becomes), why would the magnification stay the same... right?

I'm terrible at math so it makes no sense to me- I just want my 1:1 105mm to become a 1:1 210mm lol!

If you attach the Viv 105mm to a 2x TC you will get 210mm with the same minimum focusing distance but twice the magnification, so maximum macro will be 1:0.5. If the TC is the macro Vivitar, you can reduce the minimum focusing distance by extending the TC barrel, How much extra magnification this would give you, I don't know, but I would guess at least an extra 30% so you maximum macro would be something like 1:0.4 or 1:0.3. We'd have to know how much the TC extends and do some math to find out.

I would suggest a powerful flash be used with this set up
