Picture of the Week (POTW): 8 May - 22 May 2011
Posted By: stevebrot, 05-15-2011, 09:10 AM

Welcome to the 165th edition of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week. Thanks to emetcalf for hosting last week!

This edition covers photos taken between 8th and 22nd of May 2011. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Previous hosts: Each one is a hotlink to that POTW thread to look back at the previous POTW's.

The thread is now active, but I have nothing to start it with . (I was shooting non-Pentax film the last week or so.) Perhaps I can do something today?

Steve, thanks for hosting!
Rense, nice street B&W
Jeff, good use of the constant rainy days

I actually caught a break in weather on Friday, went to Magee Marsh for the annual Spring Bird migration and only saw a few sprinkles, and was out from 6:30am to after 5:00pm, it was worth it, got photos of many types of birds and other wildlife that I haven't got before, many that I saw for the first time.

Bay-Breasted Warbler:

Black & White Warbler:

Nighthawk:

Woodcock Sighting, unfortunately, I never saw the woodcocks:

House Wren:

Tom you got some nice shots there. I don't think I've seen any of those here except for the wren, they live here all the time. I think the only migrating birds I got this year were the goldfinches.

Rense the street shots are excellent, the look on the guy's face pushing the baby buggy is great.

A couple from the past few days.

A Black Vulture from a few days ago. I missed the focus just a tiny bit so it was sharpened 20%, I think I also pushed the contrast 20% but don't remember. This one and some Turkey Vultures were watching some roadkill, waiting for me to leave so they could have dinner. All the shots of the Turkey Vultures were way overexposed, I forgot to change shutter speed when I started shooting toward the sky...

"new" lens...Just got a Lentar 135mm f2.8 M42 lens. Seems to be doing a nice job so far, but haven't taken a lot of shots with it. This is a wild rose here in town, they just started blooming a few days ago. Taken this morning at f8, ISO 100. This is right beside the railroad track, they have been growing here since my mother was young over 60 years ago. Now these roses have taken over an area that covers just about a city block. The honey bee was incidental...but I wasn't about to pass him up...

Also got a pair of screw mount extension tubes, Soligor 10mm and 32mm. This damselfly was taken with the Lentar 135 and the 32mm tube. Also this morning, and at f8, ISO 100. I think I'm going to like this lens, if it does as well as the 90-230 zomm I have, it will be a great lens. So far it looks like a very good one, these are just a couple of 30 or 40 shots so far, and some are very good. I'm still learning to use the extension tubes, but it looks like they might do well. Also have another set of 3 coming in soon, Vivitar brand, might put them all together and see how radical I can get with some macro... To be honest though, so far I like my 50mm and binocular lens rig best...

This Bluejay was sitting on a fence right off the street, no traffic behind me so I was able to stop for 3 shots. This one turned out to be one of my nicest shots in a long time.

Taken on May 12 with Vivitar 200mm f3.5 lens. No editing except crop and resize. I think it was cropped at 3072x2308 for the ratio I need to get 1024x768 when resized. He was very close...

Great start! I still have got to do some shooting and tomorrow looks prime! In the mean time...

Rense: Thanks for starting things off in such a sterling manner. Excellent B&W work.
JeffJS: Beautiful foliage...the roses are yet to come?
Ramsey: The birds look great and so difficult to shoot! I like the Woodcock crowd.
Paleo Pete: Vultures! Great urban wildlife and flowers.
Robin: Nice to see more of Schweppes! (As always)
Robbiec: Looks like you are putting the Helios-44M4 to good use.
sjtryon: Nice colors and artistic treatment...I like!

I am truly looking forward to seeing what the rest of the week is bringing!

I got these while on a walk during my lunch hour.
K20 + DA 55-300mm

Uncropped at 300mm - this duck was about 8 feet away from me. She was carefully watching her ducklings that were walking around my feet.

Cropped a little, also at 300mm.

Temple in Seoul

Hi all. This is from the Bongwansa (temple) near my house in Seoul. This photo has a lot more pizzazz when viewed in PSE 7, even when viewed in its low-resolution, jpg format. Guess I need to do some research...

Thank you Steve.. Yes, the roses are yet to come. Last year they bloomed a couple weeks early, this year everything seems to be lagging about a week.
