POTW #180 Sept. 4, 2011-Sept 18, 2011
Posted By: lukulele, 09-11-2011, 10:31 AM

Welcome to edition 180 of the Pentax Forum's Picture of the Week. Thanks to Pentaximus for a great week of hosting and all of our worldwide community of contributors for their great work.

This edition covers photos from Sept. 4 to Sept 18, 2011. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favourite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Here are the links to previous POTW threads:

Potw #180

It's POTW #180 and I'll start the week off with a tip of the hat to Pentaximus for a terrific week. Here are a few shots of a local railroad revival and the old Loray Mill in Gastonia, NC

The landscape architecture is certainly inspirational up your way.

Thanks for hosting lukulele!

Dave, that landscape may have been shot in Edmonton but would have been nothing without Calgary! (Note for non-Albertans: Calgary and Edmonton have long standing rivalries on almost every matter imaginable but those are Calgary Stampeder cheerleaders!)

Some shots around Calgary from this weekend (sorry no cheerleaders)

Richard, interesting laser cut weathervane and the 77 is just as sharp.
Joe, the b&w scraper is a vertical architectural classic. Are the leaf tips of the hardwoods in #2 beginning to change already?

lukulele: thanks for hosting, and for sharing the rail shots. #1 is an unusual "men at work" shot, and #2 is a classic working rail scene.

(and thanks to pentaximus for hosting POTW 179; sorry I had to miss out.)

Dave: some scenic landscapes there.

Richard: your magpie shot is yet more evidence that the DA 55-300 would be a good choice for when I want to go longer than my DA* 200.

Joe: another thumbs up for your skyscraper shot. 15mm limited, I presume? Yet another on my LBA list.

I've been down at the NC coast since last weekend; mainly working (poor me) but have been able to get the camera out from time to time; just not much time for sorting or processing yet. Here's a Painted Bunting. Yes, a feeder shot, and a rather heavy-handed pseudo-HDR treatment to deal with the exposure, but this week was my first look at these striking birds and I was pleased to get any shots at all.

Yes lukulele the leaves are turning colour here, this year the green is actually hanging on a little longer than usual but all we need is a good killing frost.

Thanks for the comments on the skyscraper. This city has a great combination of natural parks and glass towers. No baro-nite it is not my beloved 15 Ltd in action but my less loved DA*16-50 just back from lens rehab. I am using it for the Single in September challenge here on the forum.

There are several of those weathervanes in a children's play area that's under construction. I do not regret buying my 77 in July this year. Still learning how to use it.

I like it very much. In this case it was at f/8.0 which seems to be a sweet spot. Pity I just missed the focus on the eye.

Your painted bunting works for me.

Richard.

Lukulele thanks for hosting this week's POTW.
Dave, a most interesting rural landscape from your neck of the woods, a crop of floozies that look about ready for harvesting.
Lukulele, like those railyard pics.
Richard, love the bird pics. You must have left your cycling helmet at home of the magpie pic would have been of him swooping you.
Great sky scraper pic thee Joe along with the riverscape.
Baronite, love that bird's colours.
A couple of pics from my Sunday stroll.

Thanks, John. Was I right in thinking that my numbers #2 and #3 were red-rumped grass parrots? I've been looking for grass parrots ever since our walk around Royal Park a couple of years ago when we didn't see any.

I was walking this time. Too @#$%^ cold and too risky about rain to ride (the easiest way to clean a bike is not to let it get dirty ), so I explored a new shared path that fills in one of the gaps in the Gardiners Creek bike path between the Solway St bridge that was destroyed in the Feb floods and Warrigal Rd.

You stroll in interesting places. As usual, great shots.

Red rumped/grass parrots are indeed the same bird and yes, ID was very correct Richard. We have started further our park explorations like all the way too Brunswick, a walk you'll have to join us on some time. I did spot a cockatiel, pics in a previous POTW, which I suspect was an escapee. It was hanging out with some of those crested pigeons.
