POTW #186 16 Oct 2011 - 30 Oct 2011
Posted By: ramseybuckeye, 10-22-2011, 09:07 PM

Welcome to edition 186 of the Pentax Forums' Picture of the Week. Thanks to pentaximus for hosting the previous week.

This edition covers photos from 16 Oct 2011 - 30 Oct 2011. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favourite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Here are the links to previous POTW threads:

This is my first time posting in POTW. I caught this handsome devil just by accident this morning. If I am correct he's a Hairy Woodpecker. He was in my garden and shot through a dirty glass door that I really must clean.

Bigted - Nice shot, and I think Hairy Woodpecker is right. I just looked in my bird book, that confirmed it. The Downy Woodpecker looks very similar but is smaller and has a much smaller bill and minor markings on the white feathers of tail and lower wing area. The bill on this guy tells me it's the Hairy. I got some shots of this woodpecker a couple of weeks ago, but nothing I'd be willing to show off. Decent enough for an ID, but not good enough to show anyone else. Bad lighting, too far away and missed my focus slightly...Good job on this one.

Thanks for hosting Ramsey. Thought since I'm here I Might as well post something...

Mockingbird taking advantage of a rain puddle a couple of days ago. This little guy was about 15 feet from my Jeep when I started to get in, so I took advantage of it. Vivitar M42 200mm no flash, nothing but crop and resize.

Cormorant a few days ago at a local lake. Most of the winter birds are here, and all over the lake now. I'm especially watching for the Eagles, we have 4 adults (seen today but no pictures) and 4 immatures. I saw 3 immature ones today but too far for pictures. Same lens, only crop and resize.

So far I've also seen geese, Pelicans, hundreds of ducks, a few Ring Billed Gulls, Marsh Hawks, Kestrels, Red Tailed Hawks, Blue Gray Gnatcatcher, Wrens, and very few pictures...usually too far away, but I found out about a new place I might be able to check today, going to go take a look soon. Keeping my fingers crossed...

Thanks Paleo Pete for your kind comments. I initially thought it was one of the flickers we see around here and hence the file is called flicker (I need to change it on my HD). I too needed to look it up to find out it was a Hairy.

I love your mockingbird. I beleive I am far too north to catch one of those. We do occasionally get catbirds.

bigted - Thanks a lot. I was lucky to get the Mocker, and very surprised he didn't spook when I turned around to get some shots. I also got some video that came out pretty cool. They live here year round, I see them every day. I've gotten so many shots I don't try often any more except for good close shots like this one.

Welcome to POTW. It's always fun to post your photos in this section and see what other Pentax users are up to.

Here is one photo I took on my sunday afternoon walk.

Tom, thanks for hosting POTW again. I don't know that I'll be able to contribute this week (had to miss the last couple of weeks too), but I couldn't resist checking in.

Your old saw is a great find, and your black locusts bring me back to my youth in Ohio -- we don't have those around here.

xjjohnno, thanks for the beautiful wildflower set. The landscape shot reminds me of my drive from Melbourne down to Wilson's Prom a few years ago.

bigted, excellent capture and ID. Like you, I've discovered that shooting through windows isn't the best for IQ.

Pete, great shot of the mocker and nice almost abstract cormorant. I'm jealous for all your wintering birds.

David: lovely classic walk in the park.

xjjohnno, Nice series of beautiful plants, I always think it's a bonus flower shot when you get a bug with it. Great colors!

bigted, Good shot despite the window. Whenever I get a bird the first time, I start noticing them more. Hopefully you get another look soon without the extra glass. I don't think I've seen a hairy woodpecker, unless I mistook one for a downy.

Pete, I like that Mockingbird shot, very nice! It's interesting that some of the birds you see migrating stay here all year. It seems that we almost have more red tailed hawks in the winter. I think that's just because they come closer to the roads in winter for hunting purposes. I'm not sure if I've seen kestrals in winter. I saw more this summer than ever, but I think it's because I became aware of them and know how they fly. Pretty little hawk, but they sure are shy. They sure don't like you to look at them.

David, Nice capture, looks like a beautiful walkway, maybe one you can stay dry in the rain under that canopy!

Baro-nite, thatks for checking in and the nice comments, hope you can get one or two pics in. I been busy with a couple of remodeling projects that had unfortunately kept me away from the camera too much. But I did get out a little yesterday, and took a walk with the Mutts this morning.

I think this is a cosmos. This photo reveals what appears to be a lens flaw--check out the ghost on the lower-most petal. This was at 1/1000 sec, so I don't think it's lens movement (though it was at f/1.4). I like the photo anyway...

At 1/1000 it's not likely lens movement unless you were swinging your camera around by the strap, or using Clinton's A* 1200.

I don't know, maybe CA/PF? Hard to tell with the exposure this dark.
