POTW #196 - December 25, 2011 - January 8, 2012
Posted By: jmschrei, 01-01-2012, 10:07 AM

Welcome to edition #196, the Happy New Year's edition of the Pentax Forums' Picture of the Week. Special thanks to GmcarsMAN for hosting the previous week.

This edition covers photos from 25 December 2011 - 08 January 2012. That lets you show off any shots you took last week but haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

POTW is a great place to show what you've been shooting day-to-day. It gives us all a chance to see what other members are up to with their Pentax (and Samsung) cameras in the parts of the world in which they live or have visited. We can share ideas, learn from one another, and have a good time.

So show us what you've seen in your little corner of the planet! Looking forward to seeing all of what's out there this week. A special welcome to all new members!

Again same rules as always:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.

2) Lets keep it to fewer than 6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week.

3) Any Pentax camera or Samsung SLR is fine, whether it's film, P&S, or DSLR.

4) Enter anything you shot last week or during this current week until the thread closes.

5) The current host will appoint the new host as an invitation via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact Peter Zack, Moderator via PM.

Here are the links to previous POTW threads:

Thanks for hosting Joe.
Two examples of North Carolina storage building architecture in Wilson last week. Metal storage at Parker's BBQ and the CSX freight depot beside the main depot.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling lukele!
It was a cool but beautiful winter day here today so I tried to take advantage of it. Unfortunately I forgot to check the ISO so everything on this bright sunny day was shot at a noisy 800.

Happy New Year and thanks for hosting, Joe.

Went looking for wildlife a few days ago, was a gray day.

Leitzel Codona was part of the Codona family of trapeze performers. She died in 1931, a couple days after falling to concrete when the ring on her trapeze broke.

I'm going to break the rules this time and post non-Pentax camera shots from last week. In my defense, I finally got my K20 back from CRIS on Friday (had been gone since the beginning of November), so I'm sure I'll have some "real" shots later.

All from a recent trip to Atlantic Beach, NC and shot with my Oly Stylus 1010. I did take some B/W and Color with a P3N and K2, but have yet to get the film developed. Gotta love signs in the south.

Here's just a couple more and then back to your regularly scheduled Pentax photos:

Kyle, what a way to go! You should write a Hollywood cemetery book for tourists. I find your photos and research fascinating.

John, you gotta do what you gotta do! Nice shot of the neon, that could be part of a cool night shot.

This is looking out of a second story bay window of a restaurant, lot of reflections.

Thanks for hosting this one, Joe. I haven't had time to visit here much in the last few months but, whenever I have, I've noticed that the hosts are doing a great job. Thank you all.

I think I need to sweep away the cobwebs on the thermometer outside my office window. I should probably also do something about putting it in the shade if I want to trust the temperature

It's not 48C/118F. It's probably only 40 or 41C (104 - 106F). Welcome to January in Melbourne. The forecast for two days' time is max 24C and we'll all freeze to death.

Richard.

A dreery day in the UK (again) seemed somehow fitting for this old church doorway.

A couple shots of my favorite dogs, one from Boxing Day (Olivia) and one from New Year's Eve (Jake).

Olivia (black lab) was photographed on the shores of Lake Champlain about 1/2 hour before sunset with magic sunlight! I was about 20 feet away and cropped out exactly what I wanted, giving a telephoto perspective, even though this was taken on a K5 using an FA 31mm. With that combination, at ISO 160 and f/3.2, there's no limit to how far I could have enlarged this!

And Jake looks pretty good for ISO 6400 (also K5 / FA31 - it's all I've got). Of course, this photo was taken before either Jake or I had drunk any champagne (see last photo). Being a rescue from Kentucky, he actually prefers Bourbon (true!). And of course I had to use flash on that last one, as handheld was problematic by then.

Looks like the new year is off to a fine start here at POTW.

Great contributions as usual ramseybuckeye, that first eagle shot is especially nice.
SpecialK, yet another intriguing grave marker and story to match.
John, better to use one of those "other" brands for a while than not take any photos at all. Must be nice to have your 20D back though.
RichardS, I don't envy the heat at all. Over in the Single in January challenge the Aussies have been posting their hot summery January shots and talking about the heat too. This time last year I could have matched you with nearly inverse Celsius values but this winter has been rather mild so far. We are expecting +14C for Wednesday!
mde1970, dreary or not this is a nice shot. I suspect it would work well in B&W too.
Paulukas, welcome and thanks for sharing portraits of your handsome hounds.
And Paleo Pete, great contributions - that squirrel shot is vibrant !

Being back in the "Single In" challenge this month I now have to try to come up with a shot each day with my lens of choice. This month it is the DA 21 Ltd and here is today's effort:

jmschrei - thanks, glad you like the squirrel. that's exactly the way it came off the camera by the way, no tweaking except crop and resize.

This one had to be brightened a little, but nothing else. An increase in contrast is usually required when brightening to bring back the detail so it got that too.

Brown Creeper. Difficult bird to spot, much less shoot, and the only two I've been able to try both stayed on the shadowed side of the trees and never let me get a well lit shot. The creeper is very similar to a Nuthatch, but uses its tail as a prop so it only goes up trees while nuthatches go up or down. It leaves the top of a tree and flies to the bottom of another and works its way up again. I was able to watch this one visit a half dozen trees.

Taken yesterday just before the game warden stopped to see if I was hunting and with or without a license..He said he saw me in camouflage and thought i might be looking for a squirrel...I said yep, I'm looking for a squirrel, and if i find one I'm gonna shoot it too...He got a laugh out of that one and we had a nice chat for about 10 minutes. He also told me how to get into a wildlife management area i've been trying to get into and most of the roads are closed for one reason or another and definitely not suitable for street tires in winter.
