POTW #277 - 18 August through 01 September
Posted By: mecrox, 08-25-2013, 05:42 PM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week. This is edition #277 covering 18 August through 01 September.

Many thanks to geomez for hosting the three previous POTW threads.

POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take in the upcoming week, or last week that you haven't processed until now. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

Same rules:

1) No theme, just post your favorite pix.
2) 5 or less images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big.
3) Any Pentax or Samsung camera, film or digital.

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one and the new thread will start between Noon EDT and 5PM EDT on Sunday. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW threads:

Norco rodeo. Mostly a disaster for the action stuff :-) Should have shot at 12,500 instead of 1600 ISO.

Killing time.

Young Miss Rodeo Norco sang the national anthem, a capella. She did pretty well.

Slim and his truck.

Drill team.

Cool shots starting off...

I've been using the binocular lens rig a bit the past few days, with a M series 50mm f1.7 that's doing a great job. Found 3 or 4 of this insect in my garden, or what's left of it, and tried a few shots.

Here's a different angle.

Don't know what it is but a wicked looking critter...

One of the few flowers blooming right now is this one, a little smaller than a pencil eraser

Looked at the hummingbird feeder, this Bumblebee was getting a drink.

Let's see if I can remember...bee was shot with flash, flower without. Insect in 1st 2 shots with flash. All at f11.

Hi folks, sorry I haven't been on before. Bit of a busy week so far. TBH, I'd much prefer to have been to a rodeo instead like SpecialK. I don't think the shots you've uploaded are a disaster at all. Far from it. I love the one of the cowboy jumping across to the steer.

Very nice set from ramseybuckeye, with cute cows too. We have an annual fair with carousels, etc., coming on here in ten days. It's an annual event in this town. I can't wait. It's always brilliant for photographs.

Fantastic shots there, Paleo Pete. I don't know how you work your "binocular" rig but the results are great and very life-like. I like the last one - bumblebees (?) are so inoffensive and attractive (as well as a bit greedy, I think).

Thanks. They are the better ones.

These are the ones that are bad, but I'm calling them "art" :-)

mecrox - Thanks. The binocular lens rig works like this...I took the objective lens off a pair of junk binoculars, took it to a friend's machine shop and cut the barrel down to about 1 1/4 inches. It wiggles onto the 49mm filter ring of a 50mm lens pretty well and stays put, then it acts as a magnifying glass.

Looks like this in use

Works great, working distance around 4 to 5 inches, doesn't seem to affect exposure, and if I can hold it steady enough it gets terrific pictures. I'm not sure which gives me more trouble, getting close enough or holding it steady enough...when possible I put my left hand on the ground to help steady the camera, or I rest my elbow on my knee, and almost always move in and out for focus rather than trying to use the focusing ring. When I can use a tripod it's fantastic, but that's very rare. I've also used a mini tripod about 4 inches tall quite a few times as a handle to help hold it steady, by holding my hand on the ground and helping hold the camera with the mini tripod, and if I'm doing some tiny flowers occasionally it can be actually used as a tripod...

Wow, Paleo Pete, that looks most impressive and a tribute to your craft skills. It also works a treat as we know. I'm not sure I have any skills in that direction. The last time I tried some DIY I totalled a hot water system.

Anyway, very little time for much photography this week. Here are a few, though:

Wheatfield, adapted for a painterly look using Dynamic Auto-Painter

Thistle heads and dandelion seeds

oxford-1-290813

A small tortoiseshell butterfly, always a great sight as they are struggling here a bit

oxford-2-290813

---

I've also just got some 12 x 8 prints made using shots from my MX-1 compact. I developed them from RAW, so they are not straight out of the camera, but the quality is great and the lady who works the printing machine was amazed when I said they were from a compact camera. It's good to know one can produce so much more than snappy snaps from such a small item.

Great shots, @jheu02, so atmospheric, really lovely soft light. A friend has just come back from two weeks in that area. He took a flight on one of those seaplanes and spent a couple of days on a sailboat. It really comes across as the most magical place and I'm sure the sense of space coming from a crowded country like mine would be amazing.

mecrox - As a DIY project it's not hard. The lens barrel screws off, you can cut it with a hacksaw if you're a little careful, and it just wiggles onto the 49mm filter ring of a nifty fifty with no trouble.

As for compact cameras, I've taken some shots with a Samsung compact that impressed a lot of people. It depends a lot on the camera, some just won't get a good shot no matter what you do, some will if you know a little about photography. For that matter I got some shots with a 110 film instamatic I blew up to 8x10 for two friends, pictures of them onstage with their band, and they came out good enough I had 2 more made and gave them to the guys for Christmas presents. That's a piece of film you can cover with a dime...so yeah you can get good shots with a compact...if you have a good one and know what you're doing...
