POTW # 14 JUNE 2 to JUNE 15

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for filling in the gap last week Kim and keeping this weekly post from going the way of the Dodo.

Well, it is Sunday! In the East they are baking, in the Midwest... they are looking for a lifeline and a boat and out West they are still wearing winter coats. So, there must be plenty of "stuff" to shoot out there.

Feel free to post any topic you enjoy that was phtographed between June 2 and June 15. I won't check if you are a day or so either side

Rules as before:
1) No theme just your favorite stuff.
2) Let's keep it to about 4-6 images per post just so the thread doesn't get too big each week .
3) Any Pentax camera is fine, film, P&S, DSLR (or Samsung DSLR)
4) Runs for 7 days <Sunday Date> to <Sunday Date>
5) Enter anything you shot last week or this current week until the thread closes.

Since I havn't done much personal photography, I will post some from today to get the ball going. I was busy rescreening all the doors and windows today so I took a few macros of the critters in the backyard.

I was coming back from a workout recently, and saw a bunch of RW Blackbirds harassing a Crow. They literally forced him to make an emergency landing. Once down, they kept their distance, but waited, menacing him. I wish I'd dialed in a little more DOF here, but this all happened pretty fast and I was lucky to get what I did.

After the crow took off again, the RW Blackbirds continued to harass him. Here you see one pressing his attack from the rear. It appears that they aim for the back of the head or the wing roots. I was able to watch this for a while, but these are the best two shots I got of the whole thing. Pentax DA 55-300 mm, photos cropped to about 100%.

Americade 08

This past week was the Americade motorcycle rally in Lake George. I was very busy at work and at home with 2 broken down cars but managed to get into town friday and saturday night to catch up with old friends and take some pictures. These were shot handheld with my K10D and kit lens.

This is technically called "mobbing". The problem is that crows and hawks are opportunists and predators. This behavior is common with songbird species towards predators. Blackbird are extremely active in this type of behavior. I think this picture is a really good example of this type of behavior. The birds are doing this to protect the young in the nest.

First shot from Newfoundland. Very long lens setup as the Iceberg was about 2 Kms away and the cliff around 6 Kms away.
More to come in a few days...

And another. You'll see this sort of thing in some of the bays and coves around parts of Newfoundland.

Peter, this is a really wonderful and pensive image. I liked it when I first saw it, but after coming back to it several times I kept seeing additional details... like all the nails sticking out horizontallyfrom the freeboard. Nice image.

The iceberg is neat too and I am looking forward to seeing more of them. Not too many icebergs in Pennsylvania.

Hey Woof,
got one blackbird in my backyard, very very brave, takes on all the big roving birds.

Peter zack,
I'll try to top your iceberg shot with my special iceberg :-) I'd pass this one on to you all if I could, I really would!

My choice was vanilla and lemon ice with the fruits, aaah.
